  • ART4FL : An Agent-based Architectural Approach for Trustworthy Federated Learning in the IoT
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 8th International Conference on Fog and Mobile Edge Computing, FMEC 2023. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9798350316971 - 9798350316988 ; , s. 270-275
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies has opened up for the development of novel types of systems and services. Federated Learning (FL) has enabled the systems to collaboratively train their ML models while preserving the privacy of the data collected by their IoT devices and objects. Several FL frameworks have been developed, however, they do not enable FL in open, distributed, and heterogeneous IoT environments. Specifically, they do not support systems that collect similar data to dynamically discover each other, communicate, and negotiate about the training terms (e.g., accuracy, communication latency, and cost). Towards bridging this gap, we propose ART4FL, an end-to-end framework that enables FL in open IoT settings. The framework enables systems’ users to configure agents that participate in FL on their behalf. Those agents negotiate and make commitments (i.e., contractual agreements) to dynamically form federations. To perform FL, the framework deploys the needed services dynamically, monitors the training rounds, and calculates agents’ trust scores based on the established commitments. ART4FL exploits a blockchain network to maintain the trust scores, and it provides those scores to negotiating agents’ during the federations’ formation phase. © 2023 IEEE.

  • A Hybrid Micro-Simulator for Determining the Effects of Governmental Control Policies on Transport Chains
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Multi-Agent and Multi-Agent Based Simulation. - New York City : Springer.
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A simulation-based tool is described which will be used to investigate how the actors in a transport chain are expected to act when different types of governmental control policies are applied, such as, fuel taxes, road tolls, vehicle taxes and requirements on vehicles. The simulator is composed of two layers, one layer simulating the physical activities taking place in the transport chain, e.g., production, storage, and transports of goods, and another layer simulating the different actors’ decision making processes. The decision layer is implemented by a multi-agent system where each agent corresponds to a particular actor and models the way it acts in different situations. The simulator will be used for analyzing the costs and environmental effects, and will in this way provide guidance in decision making regarding control policies. In addition, it will be possible for companies to use the simulator in order to determine cost-effective strategies given different (future) scenarios.

  • Automated Spyware Detection Using End User License Agreements
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The amount of spyware increases rapidly over the Internet and it is usually hard for the average user to know if a software application hosts spyware. This paper investigates the hypothesis that it is possible to detect from the End User License Agreement (EULA) whether its associated software hosts spyware or not. We generated a data set by collecting 100 applications with EULAs and classifying each EULA as either good or bad. An experiment was conducted, in which 15 popular default-configured mining algorithms were applied on the data set. The results show that 13 algorithms are significantly better than random guessing, thus we conclude that the hypothesis can be accepted. Moreover, 2 algorithms also perform significantly better than the current state-of-the-art EULA analysis method. Based on these results, we present a novel tool that can be used to prevent the installation of spyware.

  • A biological View on Information Ecosystems
  • 2001
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When comparing information ecosystems to biological ecosystems, it becomes clear that both types of systems seem to support robust solutions that are hard to violate for a single agent. In the analysis of information ecosystems, it is important to take into consideration that agents may have a Machiavellian intelligence, i.e., that they take the self-interest of other agents into consideration. We conclude that in the interaction between antagonistic agents within information systems, arms race is a major force. A positive result of this is a better readiness for innocent agents against the vigilant agents. Some examples are given to show how the modelling of information ecosystems in this way can explain the origin of more robust systems when antagonistic agents are around.

  • Security Aspects on Inter-Organizational Cooperation Using Wrapper Agents
  • 2005
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The significance of electronic information exchange in interorganizational cooperation is well-known. We will here focus on the particular requirements of SMEs. We describe a general “wrapper agent” solution based on open source freeware that makes it possible (in principle) for any business system to exchange information with any other business system. It has been successfully applied in a pilot study involving two companies in a transport chain using different business systems. We also suggest further improvements by addressing security and privacy issues as well as an extended, possibly dynamic, set of involved companies and higher levels of cooperation.

  • Surplus Values in Information Ecosystems
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Information Technology and Decision Making. - : World Scientific. - 0219-6220. ; 1:3, s. 559-571
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A model of surplus values within information ecosystems is presented. The model is based on the classical definition of surplus value. However, as this definition was developed within a manufacturing industry context, some modifications are necessary to adopt it to the context of information ecosystems, e.g. by taking into account that products are "virtual" rather than physical. Just as in agent-based computational economics, here the economics is modelled as evolving systems of autonomous interacting agents in an evolutionary framework. In this way the resulting model is able to capture more dynamic scenarios. The model is formally specified in terms of price, profit, and group gaining functions and is applied to some examples of societies of selfish agents in antagonistic groups to illustrate its dynamic properties. Moreover, the paper show how the model builds upon labour theory of value and contrasts it to consumer value models.

  • Software Development Process Simulation : Multi Agent-Based Simulation versus System Dynamics
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present one of the first actual applications of Multi Agent-Based Simulation (MABS) to the field of software process simulation modelling (SPSM). Although there are some recent attempts to do this, we argue that these fail to take full advantage of the agency paradigm. Our model of the software development process integrates individual-level performance, cognition and artefact quality models in a common simulation framework. In addition, this framework allows the implementation of both MABS and System Dynamics (SD) simulators using the same basic models. As SD is the dominating approach within SPSM, we are able to make relevant and unique comparisons between it and MABS. This enabled us to uncover quite interesting properties of these approaches, e.g., that MABS re-flects the problem domain more realistically than SD.

  • A Framework for Autonomous Agents Based on the Concept of Anticipatory Systems
  • 1994
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper presents a new framework for autonomous agents that is based on the concept of anticipatory systems. It is a hybrid approach that synthesizes low level reactive behavior and high level symbolic reasoning. According to this framework, an agent, i.e. an anticipatory agent, consists of three main entities: a reactive system, a world model, and a meta level component. The world model should, in addition to the description of the agent's environment, also include a description of the reactive part of the agent. The basic idea is that the meta level component makes use of the world model to make predictions of future states. These predictions are then used by the meta level to guide the agent's behavior on a high level, whereas the low level behavior is controlled by the reactive component.
