- What happens in a science classroom where students are engaged and how do teachers observe and interpret student engagement? This article highlights teachers’ perspective on students’ engagement in science education and to what extent it is connected to the scientific content. This approach complements earlier research which focuses mostly on students’ attitude towards science education and their interest in various topics in science.The findings are based on a three-stage Delphi survey distributed to 39 expert science teachers. The results shows science education with a range of different perspectives and that most teachers do not perceive any direct connection between specific science topics and the students’ engagement. The survey also shows that teachers to a high level interpret students’ emotional expressions and academic behavior as engagement rather than their cognitive behavior.

- Boken Att dikta för livet, döden och evigheten har fokus på perioden 1500 till 1800 och på svensk tillfällesdiktning insatt i sitt nordeuropeiska sammanhang. Fältet är representativt och omfattande. Vi har lyckats intressera forskare inte bara från Sverige utan även från Danmark, Island, Finland, Estland, Ryssland och Tyskland att medverka med artiklar, vilket varit av avgörande vikt med tanke på genrens internationella karaktär. Projektet förbereddes genom ett symposium den 26–28 april 2017 på Språk- och litteraturcentrum, Lunds universitet, benämnt ”Att dikta för livet, döden och evigheten. Nya teorier, metoder och infallsvinklar i forskningen kring tillfällesdiktningen 1500–1800”. Föredragshållarna hade förberetts på att de förväntades omarbeta sina anföranden till vetenskapliga artiklar och att dessa skulle genomgå peer review-process. Det har varit ett övergripande syfte för volymens redaktörer att ordna så att forskningsfältets såväl ämnesmässiga och geografiska bredd som de olika teoretiska och metodiska sätten att närma sig området kommer till sin rätt, och vi har därför kompletterat artiklarna från symposiet med ett antal kortare studier över olika teman.

Förhöjd vardaglighet : Unga på landsbygden gör vardag

- I avhandlingen skildras vardagslivet hos en grupp unga som bor på landsbygden. Medan vardagen i regel ses som grå och trist visar avhandlingen hur unga gör den till något särskilt, meningsfullt och roligt, hur de gör förhöjd vardaglighet. Genom att studera ungas vardagsliv med etnografiska metoder och teoretisk nyfikenhet når studien kunskap bortom de problembeskrivningar som vanligtvis skildrar såväl unga som landsbygderna. Avhandlingen visar hur unga gör förhöjd vardaglighet genom utfärder i vardagens vidgade rum, genom att skapa och bemästra osäkra situationer samt genom sällskap och samvaro med människor, djur och prylar. Kunskaper och lärande framträder som en genomgripande dimension av förhöjd vardaglighet, och ofta förbisedda vardagskunskaper uppmärksammas. Avhandlingen lyfter fram värdet av det invanda och alldagliga och visar på behovet av att socialt arbete och liknande praktikområden uppmärksammar vardagslivet och förhöjd vardaglighet.

- The article shows how a grammar-didactic model designed for an L1 context can be used for grammar learning as well as language and writing development in an L2 con-text. Because classrooms in Sweden, Denmark and Norway are becoming increasingly heterogenous, teachers must be able to develop the language of pupils with differing linguistic predispositions. The model that is being proposed is designed around explicit teaching with the table for sentence structure as point of departure (see Appendix 1). The purpose of the model is to act as a tool for language development, while simul-taneously contributing to the consolidation of grammatical knowledge. In the article, results from an intervention study are presented, where the model has been used for grammar teaching and process-writing in a class of L2 pupils. The pupils’ grammar learning, as it manifests in their results on the grammar exam as well as in their handlingof the teacher’s comments on their texts, is examined using the concepts appropriation, internalization and implementation. The pupils’ exam results show to which extent the pupils have appropriated grammatical knowledge, while their handling of the text-comments show if and how they have internalized and potentially implemented the grammatical knowledge. In the analysis, the pupils’ exam results and texts are compared, focusing on clausal hierarchy, inversion and V2 as well as agreement and definiteness in nominal phrases – areas that have previously been shown to be central for language development while at the same time problematic when learning grammar. The analyses indicate that the pupils have appropriated the grammatical knowledge to differing extents and that some are on their way toward an internalization of the knowledge. One conclusion is that, while this way of working requires great effort by teachers and pupils, the formal grammatical knowledge and the practical working with texts appear to benefit each other.

- In this thesis the female Christian temperance union the White Ribbon is in focus. The White Ribbon was founded in Stockholm in 1900 and it was part of the international organization World’s Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WWCTU). The organization’s ambition was to create a temperate and moral society, running a variety of philanthropic institutions and adult education, as well as non-alcohol serving restaurants.The aim of the thesis is to study the White Ribbon’s social and political commitment and its ideological approach during the first three decades of the 20th century. The White Ribboners’ ideological approach and culture are problematized in relation to the prevailing and predominant view on women. The organization’s monthly journal has been closely studied and the ideas and practical social and political commitment have been analyzed in a theoretical perspective of social movement theory, according to the Swedish sociologist Håkan Thörn’s methodological framework. This theoretical approach is an instrument to analyze what the White Ribbon identified to be social problems; what was considered to be the reasons for these problems; and what strategy the organization regarded to be the best way to deal with them in order to reach the prognosticated change.The analysis shows that the White Ribbon identified the predominant gender system and the bourgeois view on women as a primary social problem. The organization’s strategy was to eliminate the patriarchal order of the gender system and to change the attitude of people through adult education, information and persuasion. The White Ribbon participated in public debate pursuing temperance and women’s suffrage, and was a lobbyist proposing motions and demanding legislative reforms. The White Ribbon’s ideological approach, as well as their philanthropic activities emanated from a bourgeois ideal of conscientiousness and cultivation, and from an interest in social politics. This was in contrast to the bourgeois view of what the ideal woman should do. From the White Ribboners’ point of view, society could only prosper when women had the same rights as men, and could participate the public sphere and become involved in politics.The study shows that the organization worked hard for equality and democracy, pursuing a feminist and liberal ideology. The White Ribboners regarded themselves, and also acted, as political agents. They introduced and increased women’s possibilities for adult education. They initiated and provided social protection for alcohol addicted women, and for poor and fallen women and girls. These activities must be seen as forms of enterprises and the White Ribboners as entrepreneurs, since these institutions were, in fact, innovations and models for solving problems in order to build a welfare system and to create a temperate and prosperous society. The thesis put forward arguments that the White Ribbon’s social and political work are political innovations and important elements in the process of democratization and, therefore, played an important part in this process.
