  • Mobbning, intriger, offerskap : att tala om sig själv som mobbad i arbetslivet
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is a study of bullying narratives, mainly co-produced in a process of ongoing interaction. The focus is on how narrators rhetorically organize their storytelling and identity work by using discursive resources. The empirical material consists of 12 interviews with, and 12 written stories by people who have been exposed to workplace bullying plus information from three websites about bullying, and previous research. The overarching aim of the study is to identify how a bullying discourse is produced, reproduced, challenged and negotiated in bullied persons’ narratives. Specific aims are to determine how bullying is portrayed publicly, how narrators with experience of being bullied build their stories, how the narratives stand in relation to victimization, what makes it possible to talk about vulnerability and what are its limits, and finally to develop a narrative approach.Theoretically and methodologically, the study has its basis in narrative analysis, discursive psychology, conversation analysis, and metaphor analysis. The study shows how the narrators categorize themselves as active, competent, and consensus seeking. They resist being victimized, but by their use of the interpretative repertoire and a standard story of bullying, they nevertheless become indirectly victimized. What’s at stake, in the narratives, is the question of guilt, which they rhetorically evade by the use of different metaphors. These metaphors depict bullying as a mystery, a lifelong source of suffering, a transformation, a learning experience, a battle, a contagious virus, and a trap. The narrators are constrained by the narrative conditions, the interpretative repertoire, standard story, and narrative form and content – a story of good and evil when creating their own story. The narrative conditions at the same time set the limit for expressing oneself in the identity work. This also means we are part of the production and reproduction of the bullying discourse when I, as a researcher, and the narrators use the repertoire and the standard story in mutual understanding.

  • Partitioned Scheduling of Real-Time Tasks on Multi-core Platforms
  • 2010
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In recent years multiprocessor architectures have become mainstream, and multi-core processors are found in products ranging from small portable cell phones to large computer servers. In parallel, research on real-time systems has mainly focused on traditional single-core processors. Hence, in order for real-time systems to fully leverage on the extra capacity offered by new multi-core processors, new design techniques, scheduling approaches, and real-time analysis methods have to be developed. In the multi-core and multiprocessor domain there are mainly two scheduling approaches, global and partitioned scheduling. Under global scheduling each task can execute on any processor at any time while under partitioned scheduling tasks are statically allocated to processors and migration of tasks among processors is not allowed. Besides simplicity and efficiency of partitioned scheduling protocols, existing scheduling and synchronization methods developed for single-core processor platforms can more easily be extended to partitioned scheduling. This also simplifies migration of existing systems to multi-cores. An important issue related to partitioned scheduling is distribution of tasks among processors which is a bin-packing problem. In this thesis we propose a partitioning framework for distributing tasks on the processors of multi-core platforms. Depending on the type of performance we desire to achieve, the framework may distribute a task set differently, e.g., in an application in which tasks process huge amounts of data the goal of the framework may be to decrease cache misses.Furthermore, we propose a blocking-aware partitioning heuristic algorithm to distribute tasks onto the processors of a multi-core architecture. The objective of the proposed algorithm is to decrease blocking overhead of tasks which reduces the total utilization and has the potential to reduce the number of required processors. Finally, we have implemented a tool to facilitate evaluation and comparison of different multiprocessor scheduling and synchronization approaches, as well as different partitioning heuristics. We have applied the tool in the evaluation of several partitioning heuristic algorithms, and the tool is flexible to which any new scheduling or synchronization protocol as well as any new partitioning heuristic can easily be added.

  • The construction of a celebrity and her pet : a case study of Paris Hilton and Tinkerbell
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Paris Hilton, heiress of the Hilton hotel chain fortune, is well-known from several reality-TV shows, a music career, and frequent appearances in tabloids all over the world. Often by her side, the Chihuahua Tinkerbell has become one of the world’s most famous now living pets, and she is the author of her biography, written in first person singular. The relation between Hilton and Tinkerbell seems almost archetypical – it appears to be the perfect incarnation of the bourgeois pet-owner, moving her dog around in an expensive handbag as an accessory without any regard to the real pet behind the Gucci collar. Nevertheless, there is a peculiar focus on Tinkerbell in different forms of celebrity media; people seem to be especially moved by this dog and her destiny. In a discourse analysis of books, tabloid articles, reality show episodes, interviews and images from celebrity magazines, it is shown that imagery and text cooperate to produce Tinkerbell as a person. This is done through a number of different discursive techniques and among them is the linguistic prosthesis. This concept refers to the way people speak for animals, i.e. ascribe them a voice in first person singular, and it is often done in order to make sense of the animal’s behavior. By giving an animal a voice, the animal is made intoan active, social subject, but in the case of Tinkerbell, the voice of the produced canine subject is often heavily normative. It is used to criticize her mistress’ sometimes unreliable behavior, to question the mistreatment of pets, and to express a general critique against life in the lap of luxury. In the interplay between text and pet a certain form of common sense is produced and disseminated. The discussion is divided in two sections. First, it is argued that popular media’s fixation with Tinkerbell stems from the way the pet as a social phenomenon trifle with common dichotomies such as nature/culture, authenticity/simulation, wilderness/civilization, speech/speechlessness, child/adult and poor/rich. Second, the relation between representations of animals in media, such as wildlife films and TV-shows on dog-training and veterinary clinics, is discussed in relation to the epistemology of the reality show genre.

  • 'Cultural Authorization' and doctors trained outside the EU/EEA : A Grounded Theory Approach
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 15th Nordic Migration Research Conference. - Malmö : Malmö University. - 9789171040916 ; , s. 28-29
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A growing shortages of health professionals, in particular nurses and doctors, have emerged in OECD countries. One way to meet such shortages is via the international migration of health workers. Between 1970 and 2005, the number of foreign-trained doctors increased at a rapid rate. In Sweden, the average annual growth rate is 7 percent per year (International Migration Outlook, 2007). These prognoses indicate that the number of non-Swedish medical doctors will continue to increase in coming years. The Swedish Board of Health and Welfare categorizes this group into two categories: (1) doctors trained in EU/EEA-countries, and (2) doctors trained in countries outside the EU/EEA. Preliminary results from this text analysis study indicate that doctors with training from outside the EU/EEA do not have the same social presumptions as doctors trained in the EU/EEA. The data analyzed comes from texts published in Swedish health journals. Using a grounded theory approach, we have generated a theoretical explanation for the special presumptions of doctors trained outside the EU/EEA. We argue that this group, through these selected texts, is ascribed a cultural capital that differs from the formal competence needed to serve as a doctor in Sweden. This becomes an obstacle for their integration into the professional labour market. We call this socio-professional phenomenon “cultural authorization”.

    • In the recent year, concerns about growing shortages of health professionals, in particular nurses & doctors have emerged in OECD countries. These shortages have been met via international migration of health workers. Between 1970 & 2005, the number of foreign-trained doctors has increased at a rapid rate. This development indicates that non-Swedish medical doctors will continue to increase in the years to come. The Swedish Board of Health & Welfare categorizes this group into two subcategories which are used in this paper: (1) doctors trained in EU/EEA-countries, & (2) doctors trained in countries outside the EU/EEA. We used a grounded theory approach for analysing 23 selected articles from professional health journals. Preliminary results from this text analysis study indicate that doctors with training from outside the EU/EEA do not have the same social presumptions as doctors trained in the EU/EEA. Using a grounded theory approach, we have generated a theoretical explanation of the special presumptions of doctors trained outside the EU/EEA. We argue that the members of this group are ascribed a type of cultural capital that differs from the formal competence needed to serve as a doctor in Sweden which effect their professional integration process. We call this socio-professional phenomenon “cultural authorization”.

  • Stress Management 2.0 : A Holistic Approach to Self-management Online
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Multi-Conference on Complexity, Informatics and Cybernetics (IMCIC 2010). - Orlando, Florida USA : International Institute of Informatics and Systemics (IIIS). ; , s. 312-317
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The last years have put stress management on the agenda of healthcare. Intense lifestyles with job and domestic demands let people experience high levels of stress and to react strongly to different stressors. Long-term sickness and absence from work can be a consequence of too high stress exposure during a long period of time. This negative trend can be counteracted if we allow a combination of actions to support people who experience stressful lives. Different online programs are available for people with stress symptoms. However, there is a lack of conceptual understanding and a holistic approach to learning online for this group of people. In this article, we present a holistic and integrated approach to ‘stress management 2.0’ that considers several areas: stress management, self-management, informatics and continuous learning through communication and feedback. The approach is based on findings from previous research studies of web based solutions for learning new lifestyles, stress management and results from clinical trials. At the end of the article, we present some design principles to be used for developing systems in accordance with ‘stress management 2.0’ from a holistic view.
