Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
- Biotechnology and genetic engineering raise a number of new ethical problems. Consequently, over the past 15 years, several European countries, including the Nordic countries, have passed new laws in an attempt to deal with the ethical problems posed by biotechnology. These developments raise the question of how to formulate legislation to regulate both the technical and ethical aspects of biotechnology and genetic engineering. Is it indeed possible to formulate a valid ethical framework in a thoroughly secularised society? How has this been coped with politically? And what is the nature of the relationship between ethics, politics and the law, that emerges from this process? The regulation of biotechnology is very often carried out by legal means in modern society. The thesis shows that the distinction between ethics, politics and the law - inherent in the Scandinavian tradition of legal realism - is not sustained in the law preparatory Process in the fields of biotechnology and genetic engineering in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The analysis reveals that the tendency for ethics, politics and the law to merge is expressed in the new normative reflexivity which characterizes legislation in this area. The thesis defines this process in terms of four elements: a proceduralisation of ethics, a democratisation of ethics; negotiated development of norms, and a moralisation of politics and the law. These new tendencies suggest a need for a new analytical framework. The thesis argues that reflexive law theory and discourse ethics theory can provide a more adequate understanding of the new normative reflexivity inherent in the legislation examined. In a society characterised by moral, social, cultural and political pluralism it is of profound importance to contemplate how legal and political norms are developed. Furthermore, it is highly pertinent to consider how we can conceive these processes in theoretical terms.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- The article examines the portrayal of Jews in medieval texts written in Danish before 1515. It begins by describing the theological basis for and creation of a ‘fantasy Jew’. The perception of Jews was fundamentally shaped by the idea that they had tortured and killed the Christian messiah. Devotional texts, sermons and Passion stories which describe the Jews as Christ killers are therefore discussed in detail, and the image of the deicide Jew in vernacular texts is shown to be malleable and changing. The image of the violent Jew who tortured and killed Jesus was used to arouse empathy among readers and to chastise them for being too like the Jews by behaving sinfully. Other Jewish ‘types’ that occur in the material are also investigated: effeminate, Satanic and usurious Jews as well as comparisons with animals. The preliminary results of an investigation into the type of language that was used to shape the image of Jews show that certain ‘negative’ words were used disproportionately more frequently in descriptions of Jews than of non-Jews. This suggests a powerful association between such words and the perception of Jews — a connection that was supported and further enhanced through religious art and theatre. The article concludes by noting what is missing in the extant material and what this might tell us about medieval Danish attitudes towards Jews.

Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
- Abstract: The existential and spiritual aspect of coping with different serious illnesses is one of the research fields that has not been focused in many countries among others Sweden. The lack of cultural approaches in studying the religious coping have paved the way for the increasing of the tendency towards generalization of the results obtain from research conducted among Americans to other people. To get pass the above mentioned problem, I have studied the religious and spiritual coping strategies used by cancer patients in Sweden. The design of this research was a qualitative study. The study reveals the use of some spiritual methods by Swedish patients which are not found in other studies. Sanctification of nature, positive solitude and, altruism are three of these methods which are presented in this article. This study shows the impact of culture and ways of thinking in using religious and spiritual coping methods when facing stressors caused by cancer. In this respect, tendency towards spirituality, rationalism, pragmatism and individualism are found to have impacted the choice of different religious and spiritual coping methods by the Swedish informants.

OCTOPUS in EDUCATION : new models of welfare – new demands on the teachers' profession
- 2009
-
Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
- In the Nordic countries the Welfare State has a broad political base, but the meaning given the concept of welfare appears to be changing. The welfare state is not only talked about in terms of common responsibilities towards citizens in need of help or as a duty to protect citizenship and civic rights. Welfare is also talked about as a “service” directed to the individual and as an investment to insure the best possible development of national competitiveness in a global world. This transformation or displacement brings new demands on the knowledge and competence professionals need to be able to manage their daily work.Drawing on empirical examples from research projects looking into everyday school work in Pre-school, Elementary school and Secondary school in Denmark and Sweden this study claims that the welfare state transformation introduces fields of tensions that teachers have to cope with. In this context raise new questions of professionalization understood as building up new bases of knowledge, developing new strategies for work organisation and time management and creating new spaces for ethical or democratic reflections. The paper draws on empirical examples from 4 research projects studying teachers work in Pre-school, Primary School and Secondary school in Denmark and Sweden.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- Eighty patients with monoradicular sciatica were examined by myelography, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and all had subsequent surgery. The images were evaluated by a decision-analytic regret function. The largest amount of diagnostic information was gained from CT followed by MRI and myelography. Myelography was not significantly informative. The results suggest that CT or MRI should be the first choice examination in patients with suspected lumbar disc herniation.
