  • Gelebte Mehrsprachigkeit im Plattenbau : Untersuchungen von Narrativen und Praktiken russlanddeutscher junger Erwachsener
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis focuses on the lived multilingualism of a group of young Russian-German adults who as children migrated together with their families from post-Soviet states to the Federal Republic of Germany during the 1990s. Today these adults live in a ‘Plattenbau’ housing estate in a small town in one of the new federal states of Germany. The large pre-fabricated concrete-slab system-built housing estates that were built during the GDR-era are today generally considered as deprived areas due a combination of decreasing population and high unemployment. This thesis shows how young Russian-Germans create a multilingual community of practice and use various aspects of language and non-linguistic resources for identity construction. The data analysed in this thesis comes from ethnographic studies conducted during three phases of fieldwork between Spring 2011 and Spring 2012. The data was collected at a youth centre where the group of young Russian-German adults regularly met.Combining intensive participant observation, field notes, photos, and narrative interviews the thesis is a mixed-method investigation. Underpinning the analysis of the research data are theoretical models of the relationship between language, identity, and space. Methodologically this study combines linguistic ethnography, narrative analysis, and membership categorization analysis. The thesis argues that an ethnographical-narrative approach is a powerful tool that is able to highlight the role of language(s) and non-linguistic resources for identity construction in social spaces, illustrates how young Russian-Germans construct a web of multilingual identities by using social categories to position themselves and others, and shows how the lived multilingualism of  young Russian-German adults influences all aspects of their social lives. For example, the thesis shows the maintenance of Russian as a heritage language within Russian-German families, yet and an avoidance of visible signs of the Russian-German heritage in public spaces.

  • Das präteritale Konzept im Frühneuhochdeutschen : Zur Distribution von Präteritum und präteritalem Perfekt in Flugschriften des 16. Jahrhunderts
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis addresses the decline of the preterite tense, referred to as der Oberdeutsche Präteritumschwund (Upper German Preterite Loss), in favour of the present perfect tense. Its main focus is to examine and compare the distribution of the two tenses. The present work combines synchronic and diachronic perspectives in order to provide a thorough account of the process of change; special attention is paid to the development of the present perfect and its different readings. The historical change in the German verbal system – the possibility of using the present perfect instead of the preterite – is a very noticeable feature of Early High German. This change gave the German verbal system two possibilities of expressing states of affairs with the same time reference.According to this study, the present perfect is a polyfunctional category carrying not only the perfect but also the preterite reading, which can express the same semantics as the preterite: E,Rth century. The analysis is based on a text corpus containing forty political pamphlets belonging to different text types from the period 1509-1552 and considers the distribution of the two tenses according to verbal lexeme, situation type, inflectional class, voice, person, sentence type and the presence of temporal adverbials. Some textual-based factors are also studied.Although the preterite is gradually being replaced by the present perfect, it is the preferred tense for the expression of E,Rsprechen and with the temporal adverb da/do (especially in combination with each other), in temporal clauses (particularly when initiated by da/do and als), in clauses of result and in clauses with modal verbs. High proportions of present perfect verb phrases with preterite readings correlate with second-person subjects, interrogative sentences and adverbials with calendar references. While the preterite is the pure narrative tense, the textual analysis also shows that the proportion of present perfect verb phrases are higher at the beginning of texts and when historical events are being interpreted, evaluated and judged.

  • Philosophie im Konjunktiv : Nichtidentität als Ort der Möglichkeit des Utopischen in der negativen Dialektik Theodor W. Adornos
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study "Philosophie im Konjunktiv. Nichtidentität als Ort der Möglichkeit des Utopischen in der negativen Dialektik Theodor W. Adornos" (Subjunctive Philosophy. Nonidentity as the Place for the Possibility of the Utopian in the Negative Dialectics of Theodor W. Adorno) deals with Adorno’s utopian thinking and asks on what it depends and on what it is founded. Moreover, the study asks the question wherein the possibility of fundamental societal change can be found and on what it can be founded. This study develops an answer to these questions through the analysis of the concepts of the nonidentity and the nonidentical – central concepts in Negative Dialectics –, which in the theory of Adorno constitute a place at which thinking and human beings are not fully absorbed by and integrated in philosophical and scientific systems or in the structure of society. Within the nonidentical the subsuming identities of philosophy and society are broken up. Therefore, the possibility of the utopian appears in this break of the identical. Here, the emancipation of the nonidentical could be realized: an emancipation, however, which is made possible in the nonidentical. The utopian thinking and the possibility of the utopian on the one hand, and nonidentity and the nonidentical on the other hand, are – this is the main claim of the study – inseparable. In developing this answer the study also tries to solve a certain problem in the discussion of Adorno’s philosophy, namely the difficulty in connecting the critical dimensions of his thinking - which are dominating his work and directed against the tradition of philosophy (and science) and capitalist society - with its utopian motives, through which he is calling for change in different ways. Finally, it is argued that Adornos’s thinking, which attempts to realize the utopian and to transcend reality on the basis of nonidentity, must be understood as a subjunctive philosophy.

  • Kulturbezogenes Lernen in asynchroner computervermittelter Kommunikation : Eine empirische Untersuchung von Online-Diskussionen im universitären Landeskundeunterricht
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The omnipresence of digital media in all parts of our daily life raises the question of how it can contribute to language learning. This research project focuses on the potential of asynchronous computer-mediated communication for cultural learning in the context of language learning. The study was conducted in the seminar on Landeskunde at Stockholm University which integrates language learning and content learning about the ‘culture’ of German-speaking countries. The concept of cultural learning that underlies this seminar rests upon a knowledge-based concept of culture: Language learners are supposed to acquire parts of the explicit and implicit knowledge that is shared by the speakers of the target language. In the context of language learning, asynchronous computer-mediated communication is mainly used for two reasons. First, it allows learners to reflect to a greater extent on the content and the language of their written contributions (in comparison to face-to-face-discussions). Second, it facilitates interaction between the learners which can result in the co-construction of knowledge. As there are no studies on cultural learning in asynchronous computer-mediated communication, this qualitative research is exploratory. The data consists of the written contributions in a discussion forum. Furthermore, students who participated in the discussions were interviewed about their experiences during the course. By describing features of the online-discussions (e.g. length of the written contributions) and factors that influence the activity of the students (e.g. task, teacher role, teaching context), the first part of the analysis constitutes the background for the second part of the analysis and shows that computer-mediated communication is a meaningful tool for content and language integrated learning because it supports language and content leaning. Different modes of task processing are identified in the second part of the analysis: Summary of facts, Reflection about terms and interpretations, Present-day relevance, Change of perspective and Narrative practices. Those modes are analysed with regard to their potential for cultural learning in asynchronous computer-mediated communication. The analysis shows that all modes have a potential for cultural learning but only contributions which contain Reflection about terms and interpretations and those which identify the Present-day relevance of historical events lead to interaction between the students. In summary, this study identifies factors that influence students’ actions in an asynchronous online discussion forum and the potential of their practices for cultural learning.

  • Der rätselhafte Gott : Heimdallr im Licht altnordischer Vorstellungen von Ahnen und Ordnung
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation aims at a deeper understanding of the character of the Old West Norse god Heimdallr and of his function in the mythological traditions. The need for a new study of this god is indicated by the fact that the more than a century old description of him in the secondary literature as “the enigmatic god” is still standing. In contrast to much of the earlier research, the previous study attempts to examine the god primarily through the society in which the traditions pertaining to him were handed down. The category guiding the comparisons of the study is Heimdallr’s relatively early documented quality as an ancestor. The study shows that Heimdallr in pre-Christian time probably represented a more clearly definable and eminent figure than is often believed. In the traditions pertaining to him are, among other things, ideas on descent and order reflected.

  • Gefiolierte blüte kunst : Eine kognitionslinguistisch orientierte Untersuchung zur Metaphorik in Frauenlobs Marienleich
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Heinrich of Meißen, also known as Frauenlob († 1318), is a central figure in Middle High German literature. As is evident from its early reception, his work was highly admired in the middle ages. In research literature, however, his ‘obscure’ poetry initially was faced with a lack of understanding. The main challenge for comprehending Frauenlob lies in his rich metaphorics. However, despite the importance of the metaphors in Frauenlob’s work, the question about their role in the construction of meaning was not seriously raised until the last decades and has not yet been thoroughly investigated. This problem is all the more serious as Frauenlob’s poetry, which has often been attributed with a seemingly ‘modern’ ambivalence, is at the centre of the recent debate of the historicity of metaphor. His poetry offers a fruitful empirical entry to the important issues whether metaphors are interpreted today in the same way as in the middle ages, and whether modern theories of metaphor are adequate for the historical analysis of medieval metaphorics. The present study aims to describe and explain how the metaphors in Frauenlob’s Marienleich functions. It is shown that the traditional substitution account of metaphor leads to a reductionist view of the construction of meaning in this text. The modern interaction account also contains aspects whose suitability with regard to the medieval expectations on the production of meaning can be questioned. As an alternative, the present investigation proposes a context sensitive analytic model based on cognitive linguistics that tries to preserve the hermeneutic difference to Frauenlob’s Marienleich. This cognitive perspective, which is here applied to Frauenlob’s work for the first time, enables a more precise description and explanation of how the metaphorical meaning is constructed than was hitherto possible. The result shows that, whereas Frauenlob’s poetry may not be as modern as is sometimes believed, the metaphors in his Marienleich are much more than an artistic show-off; rather, they represent an efficient means of actualising a complex religious meaning.

  • Faschismus, Religion und Gewalt in Südosteuropa : Die Legion Erzengel Michael und die Ustasa im historischen Vergleich
  • 2014

  • Pseudostabile Mengen in Graphen
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis introduces the covering of simple graphs with pseudostable sets and the minimal partition of a graph in pseudostable sets. The weight of a minimal partition of a graph G = (V, E) is denoted by ζ(G). Pseudostable sets are a generalization of stable sets. They consist of one or two stable sets, but allow to add distinct paths between them. To cha- racterize them and to clarify the conditions, the graph of a set covering G P to a graph partition P of the graph G = (V, E) in pseudostable sets is introduced. Different conditions lead to different subproblems. This thesis shows that all problems are in general N P-complete. But it is possible to show some graph classes for which some problems are computable in polynomial time. Pseudostable sets allow only one path between stable subsets, multiple pseudostable sets allow more than one path. This thesis discusses two sub- problems in detail: minPS – a minimal partition of a graph G in pseudostable sets – and minMPS – a minimal partition of a graph G in multiple pseudostable sets. The problem minPS searches for a minimal set covering P of the graph G = (V, E) with a subset B ⊂ G of blue nodes and edges with pseudostable tuples T where G P is acyclic and δ(v) ∈ {0, 1, 2} for all v ∈ V (G P ). This problem is equivalent to the Train Marshalling Problem covering the rearrangement of cars of an incoming train in a hump yard. This thesis will discuss several novel insights, bounds and heuristics for this problem. The problem minMPS searches for a minimal set covering P of the graph G = (V, E) with a subset B ⊂ G of blue nodes and edges with multiple pseudostable tuples M where G P is acyclic and δ(v) ∈ {0, 1, 2} for all v ∈ V (G P ). If there are no restrictions on the graph G P , this is the most general formulation. It is a graph theoretical reformulation of soft document clustering. Hard document clustering is well known for being solved by a graph partition into stable sets or cliques. Thus this work will discuss the more general formulation with pseudostable sets. Beside these two subproblems and their application this thesis also considers other related topics like pseudocliques. A minimal partition of a simple graph G = (V, E) in pseudocliques has the value ζ(G). We will show that for the complementary graph G ζ(G) = ζ(G) holds.
