  • Real 3D interaction behind mobile phones for augmented environments
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 2011 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (ICME). - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781612843490 - 9781612843483 ; , s. 1-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Number of mobile devices such as mobile phones or PDAs has been dramatically increased over the recent years. New mobile devices are equipped with integrated cameras and large displays which make the interaction with device easier and more efficient. Although most of the previous works on interaction between humans and mobile devices are based on 2D touch-screen displays, camera-based interaction opens a new way to manipulate in 3D space behind the device in the camera's field of view. This paper suggests the use of particular patterns from local orientation of the image called Rotational Symmetries to detect and localize human gesture. Relative rotation and translation of human gesture between consecutive frames are estimated by means of extracting stable features. Consequently, this information can be used to facilitate the 3D manipulation of virtual objects in various applications in mobile devices.

  • Renewing industry cluster development via interregional industry-university links
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Regional Development. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1753-0660 .- 1753-0679. ; 3:6, s. 604-631
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The importance of developing regional industry clusters has grown alongside the need for industries and universities to be more interlinked. A regional automotive testing industry cluster, located in the north of Sweden, is the innovative empirical setting for this research paper. Following the logic of induction, it is discovered that as the regional industry reached a certain maturity, renewal was sought via developing links to universities within other regions in Sweden. A conceptual sensemaking lens is used to theorise upon the links thus formed and to develop new insights into regional industry renewal processes and interregional industry-university links. Practical insights stemming from the case are also explained, and future research directions provided.

  • Superoxide dismutase-1 and other proteins in inclusions from transgenic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis model mice
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Neurochemistry. - : Wiley. - 0022-3042 .- 1471-4159. ; 114:2, s. 408-418
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mutant superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD1) causes amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) through a cytotoxic mechanism of unknown nature. A hallmark in ALS patients and transgenic mouse models carrying human SOD1 (hSOD1) mutations are hSOD1-immunoreactive inclusions in spinal cord ventral horns. The hSOD1 inclusions may block essential cellular functions or cause toxicity through sequestering of other proteins. Inclusions from four different transgenic mouse models were examined after density gradient ultracentrifugation. The inclusions are complex structures with heterogeneous densities and are disrupted by detergents. The aggregated hSOD1 was mainly composed of subunits that lacked the native stabilizing intra-subunit disulfide bond. A proportion of subunits formed hSOD1 oligomers or was bound to other proteins through disulfide bonds. Dense inclusions could be isolated and the protein composition was analyzed using proteomic techniques. Mutant hSOD1 accounted for half of the protein. Ten other proteins were identified. Two were cytoplasmic chaperones, four were cytoskeletal proteins, and 4 were proteins that normally reside in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The presence of ER proteins in inclusions containing the primarily cytosolic hSOD1 further supports the notion that ER stress is involved in ALS.

  • Financing entrepreneurship in different regions: The failure to decentralise financing to regional centres in Sweden
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development. - : Emerald. - 1462-6004 .- 1758-7840. ; 17:2, s. 230-246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to analyse the financial search behaviour of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in different regions and the perceived importance of different external financiers for these firms. Design/methodology/approach: A postal survey targeting the chief executive officers (CEOs) of 459 SMEs was distributed indifferent regions of Sweden. Findings: Large differences exist in the financial search behaviour exhibited by firms in the four different types of regions. In the metropolitan areas, firms are more active in searching for new owners, especially professional investors. In smaller municipalities, banks dominate as the most important financier. Research limitations/implications: The study might not be generalised for other settings because it was carried out in Sweden. Furthermore, the regional types used might cause some concern as to whether the findings can be generalised. Practical implications: Thestudy provides evidence that policies need to be tailor-made for different regionsbecause the predominant type of financier differs greatly between regions. The findings also emphasise the need for policymakers to focus on equity gap issues in regionalcentres. Originality/value: The paper fulfils an important role in elaborating on the use and importance of different types of financing in various regions.

  • Innopoly : Design Steps Towards Proficiency in Innovative Practices
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Engineering and Product Design Education E&PDE11. - : the Design society. - 9781904670339 ; , s. 281-286
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is a follow-up on last year’s design steps and case studies analysis to bundle innovation skills in an educational model. In our previous research we presented the ideas and construct foundations to a game plan ideology to build up common knowledge and examine innovativeness. In this, the next phase paper, our ambitions is to deepen students’ abilities for self-governed innovative practices within a team. We have used a series of workshops with engineering design students and design students to frame and concretize the ‘Innovopoly’ educational platform. But also to find a way of communicate a coveted and sustainable knowledge and to motivate the learning since it will affect the momentum of a self-driven learning process. The implementation efforts of specific interdisciplinary design elements aim to strengthen the acknowledgement of how to perform a common and open innovative process and a holistic perspective. In order to do that, Innopoly has a three-dimensional concept based on four process phases and four different layers that can be varied according to level, how the team solves the defined task but also from the effect of an unknown factor in the game. Firstly, Innopoly put emphasis on the team process and team requirements as individual and mutual accountability, commitment to a common purpose, shared leadership and autonomy. Secondly, the game integrates the divergence of the team with a creative process where different knowledge backgrounds and experiences can open up a broader set of perspectives and refinements of ideas for each individual. Thirdly, Innopoly put the focus on external factors like working environment and visual and concrete working techniques and methods that can affect teams' work process. Fourthly, the involvement with organisations and industry in the task definition and also the idea that industry people can work together with the students when they perform the game give a realistic and up to date knowledge to the students in the learning context. The iterative process provides a greater understanding and anchoring knowledge through reflection and students' common discussion. The education model, ‘Innopoly’, builds on student-oriented learning, derived in design situations and situated practices. The ambitions to examine innovative practices are redeemed in incorporation of skills applied to manifest an autonomy level of performance and integrity. ‘Innopoly’ carries the outline logics from the innovation process – identification, research, ideation, concept, prototyping, testing and commercialization similar to the value increase as can be back traced to the original game form. The knowledge construction is supported in their performance, behaviour, thinking and reflections during all four phases. The educational prototype ‘Innopoly’ comprises of an inclination model inspired from Bloom’s taxonomy where ambitions is to prepare our students for future challenges.

  • Detecting Social Positions Using Simulation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2010 International Conference on Advances in Social Network Analysis and Mining (ASONAM 2010). - : IEEE. - 9780769541389 ; , s. 48-55
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Describing social positions and roles is an important topic within social network analysis. One approach is to compute a suitable equivalence relation on the nodes of the target network. One relation that is often used for this purpose is regular equivalence, or bisimulation, as it is known within the field of computer science. In this paper we consider a relation from computer science called simulation relation. Simulation creates a partial order on the set of actors in a network and we can use this order to identify actors that have characteristic properties. The simulation relation can also be used to compute simulation equivalence which is a less restrictive equivalence relation than regular equivalence but is still computable in polynomial time. This paper primarily considers weighted directed networks and we present definitions of both weighted simulation equivalence and weighted regular equivalence. Weighted networks can be used to model a number of network domains, including information flow, trust propagation, and communication channels. Many of these domains have applications within homeland security and in the military, where one wants to survey and elicit key roles within an organization. Identifying social positions can be difficult when the target organization lacks a formal structure or is partially hidden.

  • Extended scaling analysis of the S=1/2 Ising ferromagnet on the simple cubic lattice
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 83:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is often assumed that for treating numerical (or experimental) data on continuous transitions the formal analysis derived from the renormalization-group theory can only be applied over a narrow temperature range, the "critical region"; outside this region correction terms proliferate rendering attempts to apply the formalism hopeless. This pessimistic conclusion follows largely from a choice of scaling variables and scaling expressions, which is traditional but very inefficient for data covering wide temperature ranges. An alternative "extended scaling" approach can be made where the choice of scaling variables and scaling expressions is rationalized in the light of well established high-temperature series expansion developments. We present the extended scaling approach in detail, and outline the numerical technique used to study the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model. After a discussion of the exact expressions for the historic 1D Ising spin chain model as an illustration, an exhaustive analysis of high quality numerical data on the canonical simple cubic lattice 3D Ising model is given. It is shown that in both models, with appropriate scaling variables and scaling expressions (in which leading correction terms are taken into account where necessary), critical behavior extends from T-c up to infinite temperature.

  • Drosophila Nora virus capsid proteins differ from those of other picorna-like viruses
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Virus Research. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0168-1702 .- 1872-7492. ; 160:1-2, s. 51-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recently discovered Nora virus from Drosophila melanogaster is a single-stranded RNA virus. Its published genomic sequence encodes a typical picorna-like cassette of replicative enzymes, but no capsid proteins similar to those in other picorna-like viruses. We have now done additional sequencing at the termini of the viral genome, extending it by 455 nucleotides at the 5' end, but no more coding sequence was found. The completeness of the final 12,333-nucleotide sequence was verified by the production of infectious virus from the cloned genome. To identify the capsid proteins, we purified Nora virus particles and analyzed their proteins by mass spectrometry. Our results show that the capsid is built from three major proteins, VP4A, B and C, encoded in the fourth open reading frame of the viral genome. The viral particles also contain traces of a protein from the third open reading frame, VP3. VP4A and B are not closely related to other picorna-like virus capsid proteins in sequence, but may form similar jelly roll folds. VP4C differs from the others and is predicted to have an essentially α-helical conformation. In a related virus, identified from EST database sequences from Nasonia parasitoid wasps, VP4C is encoded in a separate open reading frame, separated from VP4A and B by a frame-shift. This opens a possibility that VP4C is produced in non-equimolar quantities. Altogether, our results suggest that the Nora virus capsid has a different protein organization compared to the order Picornavirales.

  • Measures of vibration exposure for a high-speed craft crew
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Engineering for the Maritime Environment (Part M). - London : SAGE Publications. - 1475-0902 .- 2041-3084. ; 225:M4, s. 338-349
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper compares measurement-based measures for human vibration exposure. Data were collected during sea trials on a 10 m, 50 kn coastguard craft equipped with a three-axial accelerometer at the coxswain seat and with vertically mounted gauges measuring the acceleration of the cockpit floor. The ISO 2631-1:1997 measures of vibration (namely the root-mean-square (r.m.s.) value of the whole-body vibration (determined from the frequency-weighted acceleration signal), the maximum transient vibration value (MTVV), and the vibration dose value), the ISO 2631-5:2004 measure (namely the daily equivalent static compression dose Sed), and also statistically based measures to evaluate the acceleration magnitude are compared and discussed with respect to their ability to identify the mitigating effect of the suspension seat and how the different measures rank the severity of the high-speed craft (HSC) ride. The paper concludes that the r.m.s. value and the MTVV are unsuitable for evaluation of the conditions aboard while the other investigated measures show potential in this respect. Further the approach of ISO 2631-5:2004 taking both the short-term and the long-term perspectives on the human exposure to vibration is concluded to be the most mature method well suited to evaluation of HSC conditions.
