  • Integrating Sensitizing Labs in an Educational Design Process for Haptic Interaction
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: FORMakademisk. - Oslo : Formakademisk. - 1890-9515. ; 9:2, s. 1-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New design methods for educating designers are needed to adapt the attributes of haptic interaction to fit the embodied experience of the users. This paper presents educationally framed aesthetic sensitizing labs: 1) a material-lab exploring the tactile and haptic structures of materials, 2) a vibrotactile-lab exploring actuators directly on the body and 3) a combined materials- and vibrotactile-lab embedded in materials. These labs were integrated in a design course that supports a non-linear design process for embodied explorative and experimental activities that feed into an emerging gestalt. A co-design process was developed in collaboration with researchers and users who developed positioning and communications systems for people with deafblindness. Conclusion: the labs helped to discern attributes of haptic interactions which supported designing scenarios and prototypes showing novel ways to understand and shape haptic interaction.

  • Meetings with complexity : dementia, meaning and participation in art educational situations
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Interpreting the brain in society. - Lund : Arkiv förlag & tidskrift. - 9789198085495 - 9789179242930 ; , s. 109-126
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In January 2013, a three-year project, ‘Meetings with Memories’ (in Swedish: Möten med minnen), was launched in Swedish museums with guided tours for dementia-afflicted audiences. The project involved altogether 88 Swedish museums and was headed by the Alzheimer Foundation (Alzheimerfonden). Many Swedish art museums were part of the project, with the purpose that the art educational situations would create participation and dialogue with a group of people usually absent from the museums. Art in particular is regarded as a possible therapeutic rehabilitation for people with neurodegenerative diseases, where dialogue and making of art enhance cognitive abilities and quality of life. The therapeutic promise within art pedagogy is part of the larger context of the art educational situations we have studied. In this chapter, the aim is to explore how these situations are done and how participation can be made and interpreted in relation to the target group, people with dementia. We focus on the participation in terms of the meaning making, dialogical processes of the art educational practice of the project ‘Meeting with Memories'.

  • Resonance as an Urban Artistic Research Method
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ambiances, tomorrow. - : Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique. ; , s. 57-62
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Through the research project ‘Playing the space’ we have developed ‘resonance’ as a site-specific method and a theoretical concept. Resonance involves all senses and relations in a space; it manifests the overall experience of daily life within its immaterial, continuous and elusive expression. As an artistic/research method, resonance intensifies an extended listening that takes place between bodies and space in its full complexity. By composing and recomposing the rhythm and the resonance of daily situations through collective improvisations, interventions, disruptions and further out-of-place reactivations, new situations emerge which establish another awareness of urban qualities, limits, forces and meanings.

  • Ecologizing, Decolonizing : An Artefactual Perspective
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: NORDES 2017.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper I present a design project developed in Córdoba, Argentina, entitled ‘Spices-Species’. Through this case study, I discuss the possibility of designing using two decolonial strategies —"objectivity (or truth) in parenthesis" and " being where one does and thinks"— that can lead to delinking, on a micropolitical scale, from colonial social patterns as well as reconnecting humans with natural processes and beings to which they are detached by means of devices. The paper suggests that these decolonial strategies, combined with the performance of designed artefacts may help to acknowledge not only human diversity, but also the multiple and diverse nonhuman beings that conform and participate in different localities.

  • How much for a tree? : How planning goes wild and the values of trees
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Nordes No 6, 2015. - Stockholm : Konstfack. - 9789185549191
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This exhibition item contains a book, “How much for a tree” and a 4 channel video installation. The book investigates a planning process in Malmö, that turns out as a disaster. A hundred year old park is destroyed. The investigation of the process is done in the form of a drama, where all the people involved get to tell their version. The question that is posed is: What are the values that are destroyed by this planning disaster? The video installation tries to give an answer to the question from the authors’ point of view. What are the values of trees? There are numerous ways of valuing trees, from biologic estimation on the value for insects and other plants, from the perspective of the property owner, from the importance for the air quality in the city, etc. For telling the values of trees from non-anthropocentric view, the trees importance for humans is not important. A non-anthropocentric view values what trees are in themselves, as far as it is possible for human beings to identify. The authors, both artists, suggest that through artistic means it is possible to touch upon and communicate the real non-anthropocentric values of trees.

  • Sensing energy : Forming stories through speculative design artefacts
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Energy Research & Social Science. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 2214-6296 .- 2214-6326. ; 31, s. 194-204
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The artificial world is part of an on-going negotiation of meaning, manifesting in social practice. From a sustainability perspective it is thus important to critically examine what norms are imprinted into the artificial, as well as to imagine, materialize and suggest artefacts that could afford more sustainable stories and practices to form. The project Sensing Energy is an attempt to explore how design could contribute to a re-imagination of everyday life and society, as well as what imaginaries (artefacts and related stories) could come out of such an endeavour. A critical and speculative design programme comprising the three leitmotifs Natureculture, Microsizing modernity, and Focal things and practices, provided a frame and foundation for a series of design experiments. The resulting artefacts were presented at two different workshops in which participants were asked to form stories that integrated one or more of the design experiments into their everyday life. Based on the material from the workshops we can conclude that the design experiments worked well as parts of or catalysts for new stories of the everyday.

  • Nuestras Madres : Forming Political Subjects en la mesa
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Architecture and Culture. - : Routledge. - 2050-7828 .- 2050-7836. ; 5:3, s. 53-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • NUESTRAS MADRES is an artwork by the art collective IDA performed at the AHRA Architecture and Feminisms Conference (2016), which consisted of a collective ritual and a poetry reading. The ritual created a safe space where a group of participants sat around a table taking turns in sharing their stories about their mothers while embroidering their mothers’ names on a single tablecloth. These were synthesized into a poem and presented the following day. IDA investigates issues in private and public space connected to knowledge production and gender normativity. Even though the role of mothers and their knowledge is usually connected to the private sphere, the knowledge of our mothers and their mothers shared en la mesa - over the table - is important in the construction of political subjects. How has this knowledge helped us survive in society as women, queer, indigenous, working class, Muslim, immigrant - as human beings?

  • The Strangest Stranger and Other Stories
  • 2016

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Studier i Pædagogisk Filosofi. - Köpenhamn : Det Kgl. Bibliotek/Royal Danish Library. - 2244-9140. ; 6:1, s. 5-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • [A Hand on the Shoulder: Touch as a Posthuman Feminist Phenomenon] With a posthuman feminist perspective, we explore touch as a phenomenon in the philosophy of education. Our argument is that touch is one of the prominent phenomena in educational contexts and therefore it requires closer theoretical investigation. In this article, we seek to challenge a ‘subject centric’ and ‘anthropocentric’ perspective, proposing a posthuman approach where touch is relationally intra-active and constantly present with multiple directions. Inspired by the methodological approach ‘concept as method’, we explore the phenomenon of touch through tracing-and-cartographing how it is used in educational texts. Two central aspects – body and ‘natureculture’– appeared in the intersection of touch, education and posthuman feminism. Touch as an educational phenomenon is seen as active in highlighting everyday activities in educational practices, and pushing them to be questioned and disrupted. To conclude, we raise a few questions and discuss some challenges that emerged while working with touch as a posthuman feminist phenomenon.
