    • Silk-weaving in Sweden during the 19th century. Textiles and texts - An evaluation of the source material. With the rich material available, 19th century silk-weaving invites to studies on industrialisation processes. The purpose of this licentiate thesis is to present and discuss an empirical material regarding silk production in Sweden in the 19th century, to examine the possibilities and problems of different kinds of materials when used as source materials, and to describe how this material can be systematized and analysed in relation to the perspective of a textile scientific interpretation. The introductory sections of the thesis provide a background to textile research and the subject of textile science. This is followed by an overview of previous research on silk-weaving in Sweden and a historical overview of silk-weaving in Sweden, the Jacquard machine, and the K.A. Almgren Sidenväveri, where large parts of the source material have been preserved. After these overviews, the research material is described and systematized: first the main materials, textiles, machines and other objects, and then the various written sources. By way of conclusion, the empirical material is summarized in a critical discussion where the various groups of materials are evaluated in comparison to one another. A discussion on theory and methodology regarding objects as sources and the use of experience-based knowledge in academic research is developed in connection to the critical discussion. Finally, the potential of the material is demonstrated through a textile example. The presentation is an introduction to the cultural-historical analysis that will follow in the PhD thesis. Here, the empirical material will be analysed through the use of knowledge in handicrafts, which may create new dimensions of silk production in Sweden and the complexity of the industrialisation process.

    • Syftet med denna licentiatuppsats är att öka kunskapen om förutsättningarna för förvaltning, tillsyn och konservering avseende lös och byggnadsanknuten konst beställd av stat, landsting och kommuner i Sverige under 1900-talet. Många byggnadsanknutna konstverk har gradvis blivit en del av kulturarvet på samma sätt som äldre historiska byggnadsverk. Uppsatsen visar dock att det finns brister avseende kunskaper kring förvaltning och tillsyn av denna konst, både hos fastighetsägare och ur kulturmiljövårdens perspektiv. Dessa brister kan leda till att konstverken helt eller delvis (ibland omärkligt) förstörs alldeles oavsett om de beställts för privata eller offentliga medel eller i vilken miljö de är placerade. Hur ett konstverk betraktas och värderas, och vem som är betraktaren, bestämmer i hög grad hur konstverket bevaras och också vilka skyddsmöjligheter som kan användas. I uppsatsen diskuteras därför skillnader som rör etiska ställningstaganden under konserveringsprocessen, ändrade ägarstrukturer respektive resursbehov samt lagstiftningens tillämpning.

  • Communication space : Spatial design in manufacturing industry

    • The main concern of this licentiate thesis is to discuss how built space is used for communication in the manufacturing industry, from a visual communication perspective. The thesis presents and develops the notion of 'communication space' and presents a model to describe the relation between different factors in the communication space. In a multiple case study, six different cases from the manufacturing industry are described and analyzed to highlight how built space is used for communication in a lean production context. Research results on how built spaces such as improvement places, meeting places and a development workshop affect improvement processes and communication are presented. What the studied improvement areas, meeting places and workshop can be said to communicate about the improvement processes is analyzed. The research results show that the built spaces in manufacturing industry are used for communication on two levels, both as places for interaction between employees and as a part of a communication process. The study also shows a relation between architecture from a specific time and the relation to the improvement work in the industrial context. How the results can be used to facilitate communication in the built spaces used for improvement processes in manufacturing industry is suggested in the thesis.

    • This study investigates the production of age in three state-funded intergenerational projects, intended to increase age integration between young and old citizens. The main aim of the study is to contribute to the production of knowledge about age as a social category and power system. The study is a small scale one year project which focuses on municipal intergenerational culture activities in one of Sweden’s larger cities. Three intergenerational projects within the fine arts (theater, literature and photography), were selected for the present study. The research questions are: How is age conditioned by the organization of the activity? How is age constructed through interactions within the participant group, and are there any circumstances in which age loses significance through the participants' interactions?, Which age norms become prominent through the activity? The study takes a social constructionist approach due to Vivien Burr. The theoretical framework is based on the theories of Michel Foucault, but also Judith Butler’s ideas about position to analyze how age is constructed. The theoretical discussion relates to the emerging research field of critical age studies, connecting childhood and youth studies with the research field of social gerontology. The results show that age is made significant in different ways. The organized encounters and everyday interactions between young and old participants are regulated through the idea of age difference between young and old. The study shows that the participants are given different conditions and obligations based on both gender and age-related norms concerning freedom, control, technical knowledge, vulnerability, care needs, responsibility, agility and adaptability. The intergenerational activities appear to be organized in a tradition where adulthood becomes the dominant age norm that seems to lack any need for integration. The activities therefore put adulthood in a vague but at the same time superior position in relation to other age groups. On an age-related level, it is apparent that the ages of children, adolescents and the elderly are marked in relation to adulthood.

    • The emergence of the Smart Textiles field opens possibilities for designers to combine traditional surface fabrication techniques with advanced technology in the design process. When it comes to the field of Smart Textiles as interactive materials for space design, it is essential to understand the identity of the material through design and also to understand the novel expressions being mediated for space. Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to develop knowledge by design on Smart Textiles as materials for architecture and to do so through design. The thesis formulates a research program to frame the design explorations. Thus, Relational Textiles for Space Design is defined as a research program in architecture where the focus lies on developing methods to design interactive textile surfaces using knitted constructions. The program is illustrated by the design projects e.g., Knitted Light, Touching Loops, Designing with Heat and Tactile Glow. As a result of the research, a new methodological framework for interactive textile design is proposed. The framework defines the notions of field and frame of reference for the design. These notions form a method to discuss design variables of relational textile expressions. Based on the design examples, the emerging expressions are described according to the field relations that the interactive textile introduces in space. Thus, expressions of spatialization e.g., reduction, amplification, addition and disassociation are introduced.

  • Towards a circular home: Exploring opportunities for design to support households in sustainable resource use

    • Our use of natural resources has grown dramatically in recent years, with negative consequences for both the environment and human health. At home, resource use in the form of energy, water, food, and material objects may be related to a wide range of everyday practices as well as changes to, and adaptations of, our home environments. Thus, we as households play an important role in contributing to a less intensive use of resources. Even so, support is needed in the form of solutions that enable both reduced environmental impact and satisfaction with our homes. The research presented in this thesis aims to identify opportunities for more sustainable resource use at home. This has been addressed through the investigation of home-related resource use relating to households’ practices, lifestyles, and decisions concerning the home. The research has also explored design implications to support households in minimising their resource use and analysed households’ experiences of sustainability-orientated solutions for the home. Two field studies have been conducted. Study A investigated daily use and renewal of domestic kitchens and explored design implications to improve kitchens from a circular economy perspective. Qualitative data was collected in the form of interviews and a focus group, complemented by a diary or a short survey. Study B investigated perceptions and acceptance of demand-side management in residential space heating, to support an increased share of renewable energy. This study collected mainly quantitative data through a diary tool, complemented by surveys. The findings reveal that home-related resource use depends on a multitude of practices, preferences, choices, and contextual factors. In both studies, it seemed that dissatisfaction with the home environment may lead to additional resource use. For instance, kitchen renovations or practices to improve thermal comfort which either use energy or lead to energy being wasted. In the kitchen,design was found to play an important role, both in supporting sustainability in everyday kitchen practices and in allowing needs and preferences to be met over time, with little impact on the environment. Identified opportunities for increasing the circularity of kitchens were: improved technical and functional quality, timeless design, acknowledging emotional values, allowing aesthetical upgrades, allowing functional upgrades and repair, systemic changes and new business models, and increasing awareness of environmental impacts connected to kitchen renewal. Regarding demand-side management in space heating, perception and acceptance were found to depend on factors such as set indoor climate conditions, timing and magnitude of the load shifts, communication, and control. To conclude, this thesis contributes insights into home-related resource use from a household perspective and highlights opportunities for design to enable greater levels of circularity and renewable energy use at home.

    • Can art express things that science can´t? Communicating experiences of wine attributes is one important part of the practical knowledge of professional wine tasters working in different contexts. From this point of view a central question arise concerning how common terms and concepts emerge and how they are communicated in the wine tasting situation. The analytical perspective have been generated in attempts to quantify experienced and verbalised attributes, using analytical methods with no regard to context . The synthetic perspective, on the other hand, assumes that the wine taster first acquires an overall understanding of a wine's character and then, to the best of his ability, breaks this experience down into separate attributes. The synthetic experience is characterized by being generated during the interaction between the taster and the wine and therefore is related to the context. The synthetic experience, in comparison with the analytical one, is hard to grasp with traditional methods. On the other hand, when adapting an aesthetic perspective on the sensory experience we conclude that there are dimensions of the practical knowledge of wine tasters that can be explored in pragmatic-constitutive studies.The technique, inspired by the Dialogue seminar method, was applied in order to compare the judgements of attributes in four wines within different tasting groups of professional wine tasters. It was found that the variances in the terminology for the attributes investigated could be explained by the use of different markings for the same attribute. This indicates that the Dialogue seminar method, with applied modifications, might be a useful tool when training professional wine tasters. This might generate an overall understanding of the reality experienced by the wine taster. Based on our findings, we suggest that the method also can be used in order to introduce new concepts which might be included in a common language and thus make a connection between the analytical and synthetic experience.
