- Denna forskningsrapport sätter in sådan återanvändning av äldre byggnadsdelar och detaljer i ett större sammanhang. Detta utgörs av den marknad där byggnadsdelar och detaljer från äldre byggnader cirkulerar. Byggnadsdelar cirkulerar genom tillgång och efterfrågan, utifrån rådande ideal, skilda estetiska utgångspunkter och kunskaper, något som också är kopplat till funktionalitet och ekonomi. Fokus har därför lagts på att undersöka det utbud, de kunskaper och de synsätt som förekommer inom olika så kallade byggnadsvårdsbutiker, men rör också andra butiker där byggnadsdelar kan köpas.

- Hur går cirkulering av byggnadsdelar och byggnadsdetaljer till? Vad kommer de ifrån och vart tar de vägen? Hur återbrukas de? I denna rapport behandlas återbruk inom den svenska byggnadsvården. En diskussion om urban materialitet och staden som kulturarv samt om den specifika kontext som cirkulering på bebyggelsenivå ingår i, sätter in dessa frågor i ett större sammanhang. Här kartläggs vilka aktörer som är involverade, såväl hantverkare som akademiker, och vilka idéer och visioner som driver dem. Vidare undersöks när och var butiker nischade mot byggnadsvård växte fram. Rapporten bidrar till ny kunskap om byggnadsvårdsfältets framväxt och verksamhet, och hur detta är relaterad till de senaste decenniernas stadsomvandling.

- The making of artefacts is a core activity in society, the result of which contributes to the building up of our physical surroundings and material culture. Throughout history, craft skills have been highly appreciated and have often been seen as crucial component of a capable human. Despite this, the knowledge base that constitutes the actual making is often overlooked in research. What can we learn about things by learning about their making? How do different craft skills offer an understanding of its historical use? How can theoretical and methodological approaches be developed concerning the actual making? How can we study and understand craft as cultural heritage? This book contains a selecion of papers from the session Crafting Cultural Heritage at the Assosiation of Critical Heritage studies inaugural conference Re/theorising Heritage 2012 in Gothenburg. The contributors are Anneli Palmsköld; Thomas Laurien; Eleonora Lupo and Elena Giunta; Gunnar Almevik and Nicola Donovan. Their common interest are theories and methods of crafting that could benefit heritage studies approach to making.

- This paper presents research on the various ways in which urban spaces, in terms of the city fabric itself, are transformed in parallel with the emergence of the urban 2nd hand markets of concern. Departing from Thrift's (2008:211) notion of "urban glue" - the on going "activities of repair and maintenance" that are taking place in the city and that make it hold against both exploitation and entropy - our research has identified a certain chain of competence and venture that is particularly apparent in Gothenburg's retro-districts. The chain consists of the real estate owner; the building craftsmen devoted to traditional building techniques at the expense of regular modernization; the market for reused building material and details; the conservation consultant that mediates between the other. Together they enable the transformation of ordinary old buildings, street and entire quarters into places where history and historical layers are materially enhanced and communicated through renovation, restoration or reconstruction. These places, in terms of entire buildings, facades or shop interiors, provide a performative infrastructure for the second hand market, and thus can be seen as yet another layer of circulation on the re:heritage market. The research also concerns the specific market for the reuse of old building material (windows, doors, bricks or doorknobs): its spectrum of providers and consumers, its goods and its ideologies and ethics.

- To write the history of craft and heritage engages with constructing a canon of known practices parallel to deconstructing the differences incorporated in institutions dealing with craft. Craft objects have long since been considered as heritage, but craft is also recognized as ’intangible heritage’. This can be seen in UNESCO’s (2008) designation of ’traditional craftmanship’ as a part of global intangible heritage. However, craft's gendered character is not equally recognized. In this article we will discuss craft, heritage and gender from a performativity perspective on making. The main question is how gender patterns are reflected in the understanding of craft, and in heritage making. The aim is to make visible the gender demarcations in the making of craft. We argue that the making of craft and its heritage status has been highly charged with gender differences. Recognizing this is of importance to be able to understand and to challenge heritage making processes and canons when it comes to craft. After a short theoretical background focusing on performativity and the canon of gender differences, three empirical examples are outlined. The first is about organizational aspects of handicraft, the second concerning the technique of crocheting, and the third considering visual representations of crafting, using empirical archival and published materials from the Home Craft Movement in Sweden.

- När de kulturhistoriska museerna hade etablerats i Sverige under den första delen av 1900-talet, profilerade de sig ofta genom sina specialsamlingar. I kapitlet diskuteras och undersöks skapandet av en maritim specialsamling, där galjonsfigurer hade en framträdande roll. Samlingen finns idag på Hallands konstmuseum i Halmstad, där sjöfart en gång var ett viktigt specialområde för museet. Hur galjonsfigurerna samlades in, hanterades och användes som viktiga och uttrycksfulla visuella objekt i utställningar och i publik verksamhet diskuteras. Vidare hur intresset för sjöfartssamlingen och galjonsfigurerna sjönk och hur samlingen kom att bli just en samling.

- This article discusses contemporary practices in a Swedish context, connected to clothes and home textiles that are no longer in use, comparing them to reusing practices from the middle of the nineteenth century and onwards. The focus is on how the textiles are objects for different sorting processes in private homes as well as on a flea market, and people’s ethical concerns connected to these pro- cesses. Until the early 1970s the skills of mending, altering and patching was common knowledge, to women at least. The reusing processes were about wear and tear considerations from a material point of view. Today there are many more clothing and home textiles items in circulation, which have to be taken care of. To handle and sort textiles seems, among other things, to be about coping with differ- ent feelings connected with guilt and bad conscience. To avoid these feelings people are seeking ways of letting the textiles circulate in order to be reused by others.
