- Paris : Europia. - 9791090094253
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the example of manifestos in literature and arts, this article examines the epistemological consequences of the digitisation of documentary heritage on research in the humanities. Through a comparison between paperanthologies of manifestos and the Manart database, – regarding their internal organisation, the practices they give rise to and the form of materiality they present – the article seeks to determine the underlying logic of their legitimacy and toevaluate their implications on the modalities of knowledge construction. This approach leads to the question of whether the emergence of a new digital episteme entails not only a structural redefinition of documentary archives, but also aredefinition of the disciplinary frameworks of the humanities.

  • Transcultural Movement : Shang Palace, Chinese Haute Cuisine in Paris
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Food, as an art form, is a carrier of its own culture. Culture, which is a crucial element to personal and national identity, is not a fixed and unchangeable entity but an ever- lasting process. As an Asian cuisine, unlike Japanese cuisine which both techniques and tastes have been widely accepted by French people in Paris, Chinese cuisine, although it is well-known and popular, has not been considered as a haute cuisine as French and Japanese cuisine. This paper aims to explore how Chinese cuisine, which culinary culture is not dominant in Paris, reacts to some infamous incidents—such as the health report about Chinese restaurants in 2004 and Covid-19 outbreak from Wuhan wet market—and reclaims/creates its reputation and identity based on the interview with Samuel Lee, who is from Hong Kong and now is a Michelin-star chef in Shang Palace at Shangri-La hotel in Paris. From this interview, we can see his philosophy about Chinese food, the transculturation of Chinese and French culinary culture, and an overall picture of Chinese haute cuisine in Paris.

  • Embracing Hungarian : Top-down emancipation of an immigrant language in Finland
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of the Sociology of Language. - : Walter de Gruyter. - 0165-2516 .- 1613-3668. ; :209, s. 75-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The term “language emancipation” has to date been mainly used in the context of historical minority languages and underprivileged vernaculars. The aim of the present article is to discuss the extension of this concept to other language categories and in this case, an immigrant language. It focuses on the situation of Hungarians and Hungarian in Finland and discusses the relevance of language emancipation in this context. The factors which are concentrated on are: first, the long history of cultural relations between Hungarians and Finns; second, the situation of Hungarian at various levels of education in Finland; and third, the attitudes towards Hungarian on the part of the majority society as well as the Hungarians themselves. The situation of Hungarian in Finland is special compared with other immigrant languages because Hungarian was part of the Finnish nationalist language emancipation. This historical heritage still seems to positively affect the status of Hungarians and the Hungarian language in Finnish society as reflected in a recent sociolinguistic study carried out among second generation Hungarians in Finland. Both official support from the state level and the favorable attitudes among majority language speakers contribute to the privileged status of Hungarians among immigrant groups in Finland.

  • Hungarians in Finland and Sweden : Comparison of some sociocultural and demographic factors on language choice, culture and identity
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Finnish Yearbook of Population Research. - Helsinki : The Population Research Institute. - 1796-6183 .- 1796-6191. ; :47, s. 5-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article provides an overview of some sociocultural and demographic factors of language maintenance and shift among Hungarians in Finland and Sweden, predominately at the group level. Some of the factors described are: the historical background of Hungarian immigration, settlement patterns, demographic development, geographical areas, participation in Hungarian associations along with the attitudes of the majority group towards Hungarians and the Hungarian language. After this some data is presented about language choice, culture and identity of second-generation Hungarians. The article shows that Hungarians are not a single unified group in Sweden or Finland and both groups face factors that can support or hinder the preservation of the Hungarian language and culture. Swedish-Hungarians have a greater ability to preserve their Hungarianism as a group due to population size and concentration in certain areas, while Finnish-Hungarians can maintain their Hungarian identity due to their comparably high status in society and the positive attitudes of the Finnish majority.

  • La thématique de l'eau dans l'œuvre de Marguerite Duras. [Nouvelle éd.]
  • 2008
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thematic study is to examine how the water motif is used in Marguerite Duras’s literary work. The study shows that water has multiple functions in these texts: it is linked to major themes and creates an enigmatic atmosphere by its association with the unknown, the inexplicable and the unconscious. The strong presence of water in Duras’s texts is striking. References to the water element can be found in several titles throughout her career, from early works such as Un barrage contre le Pacifique (1950) to La mer écrite (1996), published just after her death. Almost all of her fiction take place near water and the rain or the sound of waves serve as leitmotifs in specific novels. The water motif can play a metonymic as well as a metaphoric role in the texts and it sometimes takes on human or animalistic characteristics (Chapter 4). Several emblematic Durassian characters (e.g. the beggar-woman, Anne-Marie Stretter and Lol V. Stein) have a close relationship to water (Chapter 5). The water motif is linked to many major Durassian themes, and illustrates themes with positive connotations, for example, creation, fecundity, maternity, liberty and desire, as well as themes with negative connotations such as destruction and death (Chapter 6). A close reading of three novels, La vie tranquille (1944), L’après-midi de Monsieur Andesmas (1962) and La maladie de la mort (1982), shows that the realism of the first novel is replaced by intriguing evocations of the sea and the pond in the second text, motifs which resist straightforward interpretation. The enigmatic feeling persists in the last novel, in which the sea illustrates the overall sombre mood of the story (Chapter 7). Finally, the role of the water element in psychoanalytic theory is discussed (Chapter 8), and a parallel is drawn between the Jungian concept of the mother archetype and the water motif in Duras’s texts. The suggestion is made in this last chapter that water is used to illustrate an oriental influence (Taoist or Buddhist) of some of the female characters in Duras’s work.
