• Quality from within : Entry points to research quality in the humanities
• 2024
• Ingår i: Research Evaluation. - 0958-2029 .- 1471-5449. ; 33
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• It is well known that research quality notions vary across research fields. Despite this, humanities quality notions are often portrayed as deviant or particularly hard to grasp. To some extent, this has a historical explanation, as notions from within the humanities have not been the standards used in the development of research evaluation tools. Accordingly, we argue that current discussions on research evaluation and quality notions reflect a lack of understanding of how field-type quality notions in the humanities can be studied. We therefore identify entry points to further studies on how humanities scholars address quality notions in their own words, what one might call ‘quality from within’. The suggested entry points are assessment for recruitment, field-type internal evaluations, public debates on the humanities, book reviews, the academic seminar, PhD supervision, academic memoirs, obituaries and the Festschrift. We here outline how an empirically grounded research agenda around quality in humanities research can be fruitfully pursued. Thus, the study aims to contribute insights into why and how a fresh perspective can provide us with much-needed entry points to understanding quality from within.

• Bevattningens biopolitik : Lågt grundvatten som ett regeringsbart problem i Sverige
• 2024
• Ingår i: Kulturella perspektiv - Svensk etnologisk tidskrift. - : Foreningen Kulturella Perspektiv. - 1102-7908. ; 33, s. 1-9
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• In several parts of Sweden, difficulties arise regarding access to water. In this article, I explore the biopoliticsthat take shape when low groundwater levels are turned into an object of government. Firstly, I examinethe formation of a so-called anatomical politics which refers to a disciplining form of power in which theresponsibilities and actions of the population are at the center. Secondly, I explore the priorities that are madein the political work where human life, health, and well-being are to be protected and other life forms that arenot vital for human living are instead deprioritized or allowed to die. The problems have clear consequencesbut do not pose a threat to human survival. Political efforts aim to bring about changes in people’s everydaylives and affect the use and decoration of households and public spaces. Empirically, I attach particularsignificance to the irrigation bans that Swedish municipalities can introduce to reduce water consumption.

• Ethnic Conflict and the Right to Return of Limbo Disaporas : Multifaceted Reflections on the Case of BiH
• 2004
• Ingår i: Migration and Ethnic Studies (Migracijske i Etničke Teme). - Zagreb : Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies. - 1333-2546 .- 1848-9184. ; 20:1, s. 29-51
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• This paper examines the phenomenon of refugees and resettled persons in the process of forcedmigrations in the aftermath of man-made disasters. Although some of the ideas presented here couldhave wider application, the focus is on post-conflict zones within the former Yugoslavia, namely BiH.The paper uses the questions of ethnicity and nationalism within resettlement, dislocation and immigrationas a backdrop, into which the issue of globalization is also briefly reflected. The intention hereis not to cover a wide range of pressing topics, but simply to relate a number of issues arising in contemporarylarge-scale forced migrations to a resurgence of cultural specificity and ethnicized nationalismas counterpoints to globalization. The paper introduces the concept of “limbo diasporas” in the caseof Bosnian refugees in Sweden through reflection and linkage with the aforementioned concepts. Thepaper ends with some recommendations and open questions on social rehabilitation and ethnic healingas well as some general conclusions.

• Rising seas : facts, fictions and aquaria
• 2016. - 1
• Ingår i: Curating the future. - : Routledge. ; , s. 230-239
• Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
• In 2008 the BBC aired a new series titled Oceans, intended, as stated by explorer Paul Rose in the introduction to each episode, to “understand the earth’s oceans and put them on a human scale.” The series follows a team of ocean explorers that includes, in addition to two oceanographers, a marine archaeologist and an “environmentalist, " the grandson of JacquesYves Cousteau. The BBC team included both human and scientific perspectives on the ocean as well as acknowledgment of the popular history of deep-sea exploration. Through - out the series, these different themes are pursued in tandem with each other as dives in search of rare and spectacular marine species and phenomena are accompanied by investigations of shipwrecks and discussions about effects of climate change on marine environments. In sharp contrast to the BBC’s preceding series about the sea, Blue Planet (2001), Oceans was very inclusive of the human dimensions of the marine world, manifest in explorations of past shipwrecks, in the present through the dives designed for the camera, and in the reflective discussions and commentaries from the team. The previous series portrayed the world’s oceans as unknown and alien environments with little or no human presence (all humans were behind cameras). It was narrated through the iconic voice of David Attenborough accompanied by dramatic music characteristic of classic nature documentaries.

• 2021
• Ingår i: Språk och stil. - Uppsala : Uppsala University. - 1101-1165 .- 2002-4010. ; 1, s. 13-43
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• This article presents an edited conversation between Kenneth Hyltenstam, Christopher Stroud, Linus Salö and David Karlander. Its main topic is the rise and consolidation of bilingualism research/multilingualism research as a demarcated subject area in Swedish academe. The article delves into this history via the professional, scholarly trajectories of Hyltenstam and Stroud. By mapping and discussing their involvement in the field of bilingualism/multilingualism, the article offers analytical perspectives on the formation of the field, and on the general atmosphere surrounding this process. The account focuses on past and current research themes, institutional settings and modes of knowledge exchange. The creation of the Centre for Research on Bilingualism at Stockholm University in the 1980s emerges as a significant event in the evolving account of the research area. The conversation also makes clear that the history of bi/multilingualism research encompasses a variety of agents and interests. The subject area maintains mutable connections to numerous other scientific disciplines and is susceptible to various forms of intellectual influence. It has likewise been shaped in relation to various scholarly and societal values and concerns. By clarifying some of these dynamics, the article contributes to the yet-to-be-written history of bi/multilingualism research. It also comments on conversation as a scholarly method, and clarifies the scope and strength of its claims.

• Environmental violence and postnatural oceans : : Low trophic theory in the registers of feminist posthumanities
• 2021
• Ingår i: Gender, Violence and Affect. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783030569297 - 9783030569303
• Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Environmental violence takes form of both “spectacular” events, like ecological disasters usually recognised by the general public, and “slow violence”, a type of violence that occurs gradually, out of sight and on a long-term scale (Nixon 2011). Planetary seas and oceans, loaded with cultural meanings of that which “hides” and “allows to forget”, are the spaces where such attritional violence unfolds unseen and “out of mind”. Simultaneously, conventional concepts of nature and culture, as dichotomous entities, become obsolete. We all inhabit and embody the world differently, as variously situated people, divided by national, sexual, bodily and economic status, and as very variously situated nonhumans in an increasingly anthropogenic world. This chapter focuses on subtle “slow violence” unfolding through the instances of submerged chemical weapons, so-called dead zones, invasive species and high- and low-trophic mariculture in the Baltic and North Sea regions. It zooms in on the select cases of such “environed bodies”, their stories of excruciating slow violence and yet also on unexpected encounters with care and hospitality. The aim is to unfold a low-trophic theory for the naturecultural research on violence and care within environmental humanities, and to engage a coexistential ethics of environmental adaptability informed by feminist posthumanities.
