  • Owning Your Career Paths: Storytelling to Engage Women in Computer Science
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Intelligent Systems Reference Library. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1868-4408 .- 1868-4394. ; 235, s. 1-25, s. 1-25
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Motivation & challenge: Computer Science suffers from a lack of diversity that gets perpetuated by the most dominant and visible role models. The community is doing itself a disservice by upholding techno-solutionism, short-term efficiency, and busyness as central values. Those models are created and consolidated over time through social and cultural interactions that increase the perpetration of gender stereotypes. Exposing people to diverse types of role models and stories can contribute to making them more aware of the complexity of reality and inspire them taking better informed decisionsmaking on their career paths. Likewise, showing different role models to stakeholders in society and industry can contribute to increase the workforce diversity in the profession of computing as well as to make a shift towards the consolidation of different role models. This, in turn, may contribute to strengthen resilience and adequacy for solving issues related to diversity, equality and inclusion in Computer Science and more importantly allowing women take the ownership of their career path. Goal: To encourage the dissemination, sharing and creation of stories that show diverse career pathways to address gender stereotypes created by dominant stories in Computer Science. We tackle this issue by developing a framework for storytelling around female scientists and professionals to show a diversity of possibilities for women in pursuing an academic career based on the ownership of their pathways. Method: We apply a qualitative approach to analyse stories collected using the auto-ethnography and use thematic analysis to unpack the components of what in these stories contribute to building the academic path in the field of Computer Science. Authors used their own professional histories and experiences as input. They highlighted the central values of their research visions and approaches to life and emphasised how they have helped to take decisions that shaped their professional paths. Results: We present a framework made of the nine macro-themes emerging from the autoethnography analysis and two dimensions that we pick from the literature (interactions and practices). The framework aims to be a reflecting storytelling tool that could support women in Computer Sciences to create their own paths. Specifically, the framework addresses issues related to communication, dissemination to the public, community engagement, education, and outreach to increase the diversity within Computer Science, AI and STEM in general. Impact: The framework can help building narratives to showcase the variety of values supported by Computer Science. These stories have the power of showing the diversity of people as well as highlighting the uniqueness of their research visions in contributing to transformation of our global society into a supportive, inclusive and equitable community. Our work aims to support practitioners who design outreach activities for increasing diversity and inclusion, and will help other stakeholders to reflect on their own reality, values and priorities. Additionally, the outcomes are useful for those who are working in improving the gender gap in Computer Science in academia and industry. Finally, they are meant for women who are willing to proceed into an academic career in this area by offering a spur for reflection and concrete actions that could support them in their path from PhD to professorship.

  • The contingent futures of the mobile present : automation as possibility
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Mobilities. - Abingdon : Routledge. - 1745-0101 .- 1745-011X. ; 13:5, s. 615-631
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we outline and demonstrate a design anthropological approach to investigating automated mobile futures as a processual opening up of possibilities, rather than as a process of technological innovation. To undertake this we investigate the example of how the car-smartphone relationship is configuring in the contingent circumstances of the mobile present and the implications of this for automated mobile futures. Our discussion is set in the context of the growing possibility that automonous driving (AD) features are increasingly part of everyday mobilities (even if unequally distributed globally) and in which personal mobile smart technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) will exist in some form and will interface with humans and be interoperable with other technologies. In developing this we draw on ethnographic understandings of how people live with the possibilities afforded by technologies in everyday life. © 2018 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

  • Mapping and Evaluating Marine Protected Areas and Ecosystem Services: A Transdisciplinary Delphi Forecasting Process Framework
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 2296-701X. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are an important tool for management and conservation and play an increasingly recognised role in societal and human well-being. However, the assessment of MPAs often lacks a simultaneous consideration of ecological and socio-economic outcomes, and this can lead to misconceptions on the effectiveness of MPAs. In this perspective, we present a transdisciplinary approach based on the Delphi method for mapping and evaluating Marine Protected Areas for their ability to protect biodiversity while providing Ecosystem Services (ES) and related human well-being benefits – i.e., the ecosystem outputs from which people benefit. We highlight the need to include the human dimensions of marine protection in such assessments, given that the effectiveness of MPAs over time is conditional on the social, cultural and institutional contexts in which MPAs evolve. Our approach supports Ecosystem-Based Management and highlights the importance of MPAs in achieving restoration, conservation, and sustainable development objectives in relation to EU Directives such as the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), the Maritime Spatial Planning Directive (MSPD), and the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).

  • What's the Problem in Problem Gaming
  • 2018
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of video- or computergame addiction has entered the popular vocabulary as a common way of talking about the conflicts and troubles emerging in relation to video gameplay in the socio-cultural contexts of everyday life. Whether they appear in newspaper articles announcing the advent of a new grave diagnosis, or in the arguments between teenagers and their adults with regard to the proper way of spending their time the concept of video game addiction has become a common signifier for the various types of crises and disagreements that may arise within and around the playing of video games. Actually, the concept of ‘video- or computergame addiction’ has outranked ‘video game violence’ as the key trigger of media panics surrounding the new medium. Whereas the 1990’s and 2000’s offered a plethora of studies and academic debates on the possible effects of video game violence on ‘the affect, cognition and behaviour’ of the gamers (Carnagey and Anderson 2005), the focus of (research) concerns more recently have turned away from the content of video games and toward the time spent playing. This research interest builds on the idea that an excessive amount of gameplay can be a sign of ‘addiction’ in a manner similar to the way the pathological gambler is addicted to gambling and the heroine addict is addicted to heroine. The approach has largely been upheld by psychology and neurophysiology as the primary disciplinary frameworks dealing with the issue. Accordingly, the alleged ‘pathology’ has been formulated in extension of existing concepts and definitions such as gambling and behavioural disorders within psychology (Chumbley and Griffiths 2006; Griffiths, Davies, and Chappell 2004; Grüsser, Thalemann, and Griffiths 2006) and the release of dopamine within neurophysiology (Koepp et al. 1998). In this way, the majority of research on video game addiction has emerged from applying concepts and definitions of addiction from existing disciplines to the field of video games. In this anthology we would like change the research agenda away from ’videogame addiction’ as a psychological pathology ascribed to the individual toward a situated understanding of ’problem gaming’ as something that takes place between people in the socio-cultural contexts of everyday life. That is, we would like to translate the concept of ‘video game addiction’ into the concept of ‘problem gaming’ in the process questioning the general assumption that problems relating to excessive gaming necessarily be approached as addiction problems.

  • Tutorial on Tom and Jerry: The two smoothings of the anticanonical cone over P(1; 2; 3)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: EMS Surveys in Mathematical Sciences. - 2308-216X .- 2308-2151. ; 8:1, s. 25-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This is a first introduction to unprojection methods, and more specifically to Tom and Jerry unprojections. These two harmless tricks deserve to be better known, since they answer many practical questions about constructing codimension 4 Gorenstein subschemes. In particular, we discuss here the two smoothing components of the anticanonical cone over P.1; 2; 3/.

  • Multilingual and Semantic Extension of Folk Tale Catalogues
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We address the multilingual and semantic upgrades of two digital catalogues of motifs and types in folk-literature: the Thompson’s Motif-Index of Folk-Literature (TMI) and the Aarne-Thompson-Uther classification system (ATU). The methods convert, translate, and represent their digitized content in terms of various (so far often implicit) structural and linguistic components. The results will enable (i) utilizing these resources for semi-automatic analysis and indexing of texts of relevant genres, in a multilingual setting, and (ii) pre-processing the data, for analysing motif sequences in folktale plots. We plan to publish the resulting data, which can be made available in the Linked Open Data (LOD) framework.
