  • det meränmänskliga museet : Konservatorns bevarandepraktik som flyktlinje i modernitetens museum
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis takes the conservator as a starting point to explore more-than-human aspects of the museum of modernity. Assuming that built-in obstacles impinge when museums today deal with environmental issues‚ it investigates new and alternative perspectives on the engagement with our immediate surroundings, in this case the museum objects. The objective of this study is to map museum processes hidden in the anthropocentric museum of modernity. The aim is to broaden the perspective on the museum to include what the museum structures of modernity have pushed aside: ongoing processes and becomings, and the myriad of energetic more-than-human agencies and temporalities constantly at work in a museum. The main empirical material consists of interviewes with conservators working in different departements and museums in Sweden. This material also includes my own experiences of working as a conservator and as an exhibition producer in various museums. There is a particular focus on the care of objects performed by conservators. The material also includes Swedish Government Official Reports (SOU) and one central text from the Ministry Publications Series (Ds). Furthermore, more-than-human agencies play an important role: enacted through the museum apparatus in shape of humidity and silverfish.Posthuman theory, environmental humanities and material feminism form the overarching theoretical framework as well as provide the analytical tools. Three main themes from these theoretical areas run throughout the entire thesis: anthropocentrism, more-than-human agency, dualistic thinking and dichotomies. All of which are applied to the empirical material.  To conclude, museums have been part of modernity’s ambitions and ideals since they were established just over 100 years ago. This thesis shows how, in the structures of the museum, modernity’s ideas have persisted. Furthermore, these structures of thought appear and interfere, inter alia, in the conservator’s experiences of and thoughts about their work and professional identity. However, when working intimately with the museum objects more-than-human relational processes and other productive connections emerge, whereby the structures, derived from moderity’s thinking, are challenged in productive ways. This forms the line of flight that the title refers to; here perceived as a possibility for change, in a direction that could promote new ways for museums to tackle complex more-than-human issues, such as climate change and environmental matters.

  • I riktning mot en normkreativ kulturmiljövård : Metodutveckling utifrån exemplet Statens fastighetsverk i Sverige
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Kulturstudier. - København : Dansk Historisk Fællesråd. - 1904-5352. ; 9:1, s. 167-198
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Half-Naked yet Empowered? : Spartacus (2010-) (Ancient) Gender Equality in Contemporary Television
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 12th Annual Hawaii International Conference on Social Sciences. - Honolulu Hawaii.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spartacus is attested in several ancient sources (Plutarch, Appian, and Florus) as the leader of a rebellion against the Roman Republic (73 to 71 BC). Despite that none of Spartacus' historical representations overtly suggest that he aimed at reforming Roman society by abolishing slavery and promoting equality, he has inspired a number of intellectuals across times and cultures as a egalitarian leader. Marx, in the Manchester letter to Engels (1861), considered him a real representative of the ancient 'proletariat’ and members of the German Spartacus League, a forerunner of the Communist Party of Germany. In contemporary popular culture, the most recent reception of the tale of Spartacus is the US Television series Spartacus: Blood and Sand (premiered on Starz in: 2010- followed by a late prequel and a sequel), where he is also portrayed as a just and egalitarian leader. In this paper, I will discuss how Spartacus (2010-) promotes social and gender equality as an ancient virtue within a contemporary context. Unlike Spartacus’ historical and other cinematic representations, women play a major role in the 2010- TV series either as slaves that join the rebellion, inspired by the egalitarian Thracian slave-leader, or wealthy Romans who oppose him. Despite incidental nudity, scenes of a sexual and violent nature, a TV MA rating for graphic violence, and strong sexual content in overexposed video stylization, I will show that female characters evolve from the older sexualized and objectified females of gladiatorial Sword and Sandals (e.g. Warrior and the Slave Girl: 1958) to strong and brave action heroines. Finally, I will discuss how the 2010- TV series reflects upon the impact of equality and feminism in the portrayal of the ancient world in our contemporary popular culture.

  • Human Population : Västerås 2020
  • 2020

  • Making Starbuck Monstrous : The Poetics of Othering in Battlestar Galactica
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Popular Culture. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0022-3840 .- 1540-5931. ; 47:4, s. 688-708
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Of all the acts of becoming in the re-imagined television series Battlestar Galactica (BSG), Kara “Starbuck” Thrace’s transformation from human being to monstrous “thing” is the most surprising and unquestionable production of otherness. The series depicts the ongoing conflict between humanity and their enemies the Cylons, an artificially created race of robotic soldiers and ships, cyborg-like Hybrids and organic humanoids. After the straightforward “human vs. machine,” “us vs. them” ideological positioning in the miniseries, the narrative in the following four seasons increasingly questions simplistic, essentialist conceptions of identity, suggesting that such ideas are socially naïve and untenable. However, in contrast to many other characters whose changing identities are accepted, Starbuck’s transformation isolates her in unexpected ways. In this essay, I argue that Starbuck becomes a monster because of a shift in how she is perceived: the tough girl is re-envisioned as an incomprehensible, irrational other through the lens of enduring feminine stereotypes. Once perceived as monstrous, she functions as an agent of social disruption that allows BSG to move back toward the simplistic ideology of essential difference emphasized earlier in the series. Her transformation indicates that contemporary monstrosity does not reside within a being but is socially developed and applied in order to maintain the status quo.
