- This special issue takes seriously the idea that “global climate change is [...] catastrophic for the human imaginary” (Colebrook 10) and focuses on contemporary narratives that nevertheless seek to imagine the end of the world. It includes articles that explore how these narratives question the significance of the human in a collapsingworld, how this resonates with current issues in ecocriticism and the environmental humanities and allows for an articulation of environmental scholarship with the contributions of collapse and apocalypse studies. The contributions to this special issue investigate a posthuman aesthetics in contemporary literature, which builds on,but mostly shifts Western and anthropocentric conceptions of collapse,and diverges from the apocalyptic tradition. In that sense, this special topic considers the posthumusalong with the posthuman, to think about what happens after death, where the posthumusrenegotiates the assemblage of chains of life between animals, plants and humans (Derrida 285). The issue also includes essays that engage with ethical concerns of apocalyptic narratives, as well as with their epistemological implications, where the presence or absence of human and nonhuman traces determines a specific knowledge and way of knowing in a collapsing world.Colebrook, Claire. - What is the purpose of Canadian Studies? This was the question that was investigated in 1975 by the Commission of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada to understand how the government and the universities could work together to strengthen a better understanding of the diversity of cultures in this country. At that time, the notion of area studies began to raise certain attention among scholars and for the government these studies would contribute to disseminating knowledge on the specificities of Canada. Most of this report is about the self-knowledge of Canada which means the way the Canadian universities and colleges covered the question of Canadian identity from a multidisciplinary perspective. There is also a section devoted to Canadian Studies abroad that updates some of the conclusions of the Massey Commission in 1951 on ‘the projection of Canada abroad’ (Symons, 1975, p. 246) which is one of the most important report on the relation between Canadian identity and culture.

- The challenge of this book in Open Access is to go beyond the realm of cultural diplomacy when it comes to outlining Canadian studies. Based on renewed research into the imaginary of the North, the book explores transnordic narrative spaces between Canada, the Nordic countries and the Baltic states.Although the book takes cultural studies as its theoretical basis, opposing a diplomatic perspective and arguing that there is a specificity to Canadian culture that requires the attention of the academic world, each chapter draws on theories and methods specific to the various fields of the humanities and social sciences concerned with addressing the narratives (understood in a broad sense and including visual narratives) of this northern space.

- Cet ouvrage d’Achille Mbembe a été réédité en 2020 par les éditions La Découverte, vingt ans après une première édition chez Karthala. Entre ces deux dates, l’universitaire camerounais a publié une œuvre conséquente, avec notamment Critique de la raison nègre en 2013, Politiques de l’inimitié en 2016 et Brutalisme en 2020 aux éditions La Découverte. Avec un regard conjuguant sociologie, histoire, philosophie et anthropologie, l’auteur rend compte du devenir des sociétés africaines après la période des décolonisations officielles. Il s’agit en réalité de décrire le régime social postcolonial, c’est-à-dire non seulement ce qui caractérise ces sociétés africaines, mais aussi le discours occidental (post)colonial obsédé par l’Afrique comme espace périphérique dépendant. Achille Mbembe s’appuie sur les penseurs postmodernes francophones pour montrer la complexité des trajectoires africaines qui ne se réduisent ni à des États défaillants ni à des oligarchies corrompues.

- L’économie du brutalisme renvoie en réalité à la domination ultime de la Terre et du vivant. Le terme est emprunté au langage architectural pour mettre en avant les tensions exercées sur les corps et la vie en général (p. 7). « Architecture et politique sont donc affaire de disposition en règle de matériaux et de corps, affaire de quantités, de volumes, d’étendues et de mesures, de distribution et modulation de la force et de l’énergie. L’érection du vertical en position privilégiée est l’une des traces concrètes du brutalisme, qu’il s’exerce sur des corps ou sur des matériaux » (p. 8). En ce sens, l’Afrique reste un « laboratoire privilégié » pour étudier la manifestation de cette brutalisation des êtres humains et de la Terre en général (p. 24).

Acting and thinking as a revolutionary organ : the case of the French review Socialisme ou Barbarie (1948-1967)

- The paper will introduce the French review Socialisme ou Barbarie. This review was founded in France after the Second World War by Cornelius Castoriadis and Claude Lefort as a scission inside the Fourth International Organization, a trotskyist movement. The idea was to criticize the political situation under the Cold war with two bureaucratic modes of socialization, the Eastern bloc (USSR) and the Western bloc. The paper analyzes the way the review worked as a political movement and how the internal discussions affected its profile. The dissent with Claude Lefort in 1958 is a turning point when the review tried to be a revolutionary political party. To deal with the question, the structure of the political movement will be analyzed in terms of resources, leadership and international relations before analyzing the relation between ideology and strategy. Last but not least, the relations between other reviews such as Arguments will be studied in order to understand the role of left reviews in France during the sixties.

- Pour celui qui veut entrer dans l’univers de l’anthropologie culturelle, l’ouvrage de Bernard Traimond est idéal car il plonge le lecteur in medias res dans les difficultés de la pratique et les interrogations théoriques qui en découlent. L’auteur met bien volontiers à profit son expérience pour situer et définir rigoureusement le champ de l’ethnopragmatique, qui croise la pragmatique du langage et l’anthropologie.
