  • The Halland model and the Gothenburg model : a quest toward integrated sustainable conservation
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: City and Time. - 1807-7544. ; 4:1, s. 15-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents new approaches to formulate the concept 'sustainable conservation'. It is based on the theoretical framework of integrated conservation based on its physical-material and social-cultural dimensions, that has been developed in an international context. The conservation projects discussed in this paper can be described as sustainable preservation, or conservation. The empirical platform of this paper is a major building conservation scheme carried out during the period 1993 ? 2003 in the Halland region in Sweden, and its development in parallel in international context. The paper also discusses the strategic use of investments in conservation of the cultural built heritage in an instrumental way as a catalyst for sustainable development and regional growth as well as the impact of this approach on the quality of conservation. In this theory-based analysis methodologies developed the professional and research area in conservation and sustainable development has been used.

  • Towards Sustainable Conservation and Use of Materials in Built Environments : Summary from the FORSCENE workshop: Industry/Economy, Vienna, October 23-24, 2006
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Giljum, S., Hinterberger, F., Hammer, M. (Eds.), Report from the FORSCENE workshop Industry-Environment, Sustainable Europe Research Institute (SERI), Vienna, October 2006, Part 2..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Up until today, no comprehensive efforts have been made, and principles are yet to be established for the ‘sustainable conservation’ of the built environment – in an inter- and transdisciplinary manner, including systematic integrative modelling and an appreciation of the inherent values of already existing structures and ambiences. Existing built structures and environments are still often seen as obstacles for sustainable development. It may be argued that a more preventive and integrated approach, i.e. an early estimation and a meta-level understanding of the built environment and its processes; its critical loads, inherent qualities, values, threats, life cycles, production chains, recyclability and quantities etc., would rather promote any kind of planning for a sustained future and the proper use of materials by hindering unnecessary material flows - i.e. through their unnecessary/unsympathetic production, exploitation and/or use, that would minimise their negative impact on peoples lives and the environment. This alternative and more preventative approach - earlier the predominant way of handling urban planning, construction and development (i.e. the production and utilisation of both existing and planned for resources, e.g. by the use of high quality production technologies and crafts, processes and skills), was historically much based on the valorisation of costs of manpower, materials, traditional knowledge, techniques and low-energy modes of transportation, compared to modern circumstances. There was also a profound knowledge of economics in more general terms and a well-developed forecasting of future scenarios. Given the demands for a sustained future, it would be reasonable to assume that this knowledge and approach would have a great deal to offer also to the planning and epistemological modelling of our times.

  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Information Services & Use. - 0167-5265. ; 15:4, s. 325-337
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A perspective is presented where images, as technical registrations, fulfil important functions within documentation processes in the conservation field. Conservation is here defined in a borader sense according to modern principls, compared to what is traditionally conceptualised, thus enabling identification of complex problems on an operational level. The increased complexity facing the operational functions puts demands on scholarly-scientific modelling, where the development and establishment of a Conservation Information Management System has a strategic role in improving functions on an operative level. A general model based on the use of photogrammetry is presented, where a system apporach is used to describe the contextual setting of the documentation process in conservation, based on a regional real-world-perspective of operational functions in order to enable an interface between the diverse aspects of, and sectors in, the conservation field. The documentation of a Viking ship, found in the 1930s, is presented as a case study to demonstrate the system.

  • Documentation and data processing in integrated conservation
  • 1989
  • Ingår i: Science, Technology and European cultural heritage. Proceeding of the European Symposium, Bologna, Italy, 13-16 june 1989. - 0750602376 ; , s. 821-824
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The paper presents an outline for development and integrtion of registration methods and systems for information management, to be used in cultural conservation. The proposed R&D is based on a need for methods through which broad mass-registration of data as well as specific accurate collecting of data on certain characteristics, can be handled. The methods discussed are analytical photogrammetry and computerized graphic image analysis. Of specific interest is the proposed knowledge based information processing system, Eurocare Data, within the frame of the Eurocare umbrella project.

  • Setting a strategic framework for conservation standards
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Standards for preservation and rehabilitation. - 0803120060 ; , s. 64-71
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A strategic management framework to establish different standards for conservation depending on their level of abstraction is proposed. According to a model developed by one of the authors, the problems that decision-makers must solve vary depending on the system level at which they are considered. As a consequence, the measures by which the effectiveness of these decisions are evaluated must also take into account the system level at which the problem is stated. The model and metamodel on which the framework is based are presented. The model is generalized to encompass the overall paradigm of the discipline of conservation and, as a result, becomes a prescriptive model by which all standards of the discipline should be set.

  • A Model Proposal for Documentation, Monitoring and Analysis of Building Façades
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings Optical 3D Measurement Techniques VIII 9-12 July 2007. Editors: Armin Grühn and Heribert Kahmen. - 3906467678
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pro-active long-term maintenance and sustainable conservation of immovable cultural heritage as well as recent built environments at large constitutes a vital challenge for involved actors. Such an actor is the public property owner and housing corporation Förvaltnings AB Framtiden (Inc.) in Göteborg in Sweden. Through its subsidiary companies the Framtiden-group owns a building-stock of considerable proportions. This paper presents a proposal for an application-oriented model for photogrammetric documentation, monitoring, and analysis of material conditions and occurring deterioration phenomena, of façades of residential buildings. It is argued that such a model strongly will contribute to development of a valid and consistent platform of relevant knowledge anticipated to support establishment of vital strategies for long-term maintenance of built environments. A collaborative network has been established in order to provide the model in progress with a viable vocational and scholarly-scientific mix of needed competences.

  • Conservation and Maintenance of Modern Urban Architecture: The need for Long-term Maintenance and Sustainable Management of Metropolitan Housing Areas
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Minerals and Energy - Raw Materials Report. - 1651-2286 .- 1404-1049. ; 22:1, s. 72-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A problematic legacy of challenging issues – technically, materially, economically, environmentally, and socially – in this context with regard to European built environments – calls for an academic trans-disciplinary, systemic and problem driven methodological approach in order to achieve a needed breakthrough in pro-active and sustainable management of involved housing areas, contributing to sustainable development and increase of quality of life in a town as a whole. This approach is relevant to elaborate in accordance to the currently developing sustainability discourse and the concept of integrated conservation, with its physical and social dimensions, which enables identification of appropriate means to deal with contextual and complex issues, such as e.g. valorisation, planning, interventions and identification of human needs related to urban structures of a general building stock – i.e. “ordinary” recent buildings and environments. The crucial comprehension of urban fabric as an integrated material, economic and social resource highlights the need for a strategic and holistic, long-term approach to the management and conservation of modern metropolitan housing areas as an important aspect of sustainable urban planning and development at large.
