  • From soccer to futsal: Brazilian elite-level men players’ career pathways
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Soccer & Society. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1466-0970 .- 1743-9590. ; 22:5, s. 486-501
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many Brazilian boys dream of a professional soccer career. During adolescence, however, many players move into futsal, a popular, less professionalized counterpart to soccer. To study players’ investment in a futsal career, this article aimed to understand how childhood socialization relates to players’ career development; to reconstruct the pathways players developed to become elite futsal athletes; and to identify reasons that led players to move from soccer to futsal. Semi-structured interviews with 18 Brazilian national team futsal players provided data. Bourdieu’s Theory of Social Fields helped to understand players’ investment in futsal. The results show that players experienced a fruitful social context and familial socialization that facilitated ‘ball-kicking capitals’; developed a habitus that better matched the futsal than the soccer subfield; and delegitimized soccer as a suitable environment to participate in. We conclude with critical implications for futsal and soccer stakeholders aiming to maintain/create attractive career environments in times of increasing professionalism

  • Moving Away: Intra-National Migration Experiences of Brazilian Men Elite Futsal Players During Youth
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Review for the Sociology of Sport. - : SAGE Publications. - 1012-6902 .- 1461-7218. ; 57:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Migration experiences are common for athletes, especially in team sports. Moving from home to a recruiting sport club has become an indispensable career investment. This is also the case in Brazilian futsal, where many developing players move to more promising clubs within the country. This process is often challenging, but little researched. The purpose of this article is to investigate 13 Brazilian men elite futsal players’ intra-national migration experiences during their youth. We aim to: provide insight into what factors allowed players to invest in a futsal career through migration; demonstrate the challenges young players faced during their migration; and describe how they adapted to the futsal context they had moved to. We use a Bourdieusian framework to examine young futsal players’ disposition to intra-national migration and the influence of capitals on their integration in the receiving places. A thematic analysis allowed us to identify that: Players’ disposition to migration was shaped by their families’ habitus and illusio related to futsal; some of the reported issues could have been avoided if clubs had provided more efficient support to young migrant athletes; and families and networks (social capital) were key for players being able to adapt to the new futsal context.

  • Coping With Growth in Adolescent Elite Sport
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Sociology of Sport Journal. - : Human Kinetics. - 0741-1235 .- 1543-2785. ; 31:3, s. 304-326
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Growing up in elite sport represents a challenging project. Young athletes must negotiate a career-defining transitional period while in the midst of adolescence. In this context, notably, the growth process can lead to health problems such as overloading and injuries. In this article, we investigate how adolescent elite athletes cope with problematic growth experiences. Taking a Bourdieusian perspective, we consider coping to be a socioculturally-located practice. Drawing on qualitative interviews and participant observation in German elite sport, our conversational analysis reveals five typical coping strategies among young athletes: (a) distancing, (b) rationalization, (c) active agency, (d) self-disciplining, and (e) responsibility transfer. We reflect on the health-compromising side effects of these strategies as well as the implications for the sporting community’s handling of growth problems.

  • ''How Much Is Too Much?'' The Social Construction of Elite Youth Athlete Exercise Tolerances From the Coaches' Perspective
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sport and Social Issues. - : SAGE Publications. - 0193-7235 .- 1552-7638. ; 39:4, s. 308-331
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coaches are key actors in youth elite sport. As such, they are regularly confronted with professional problems that are both complex and highly consequential. Herein, we address one fundamental coaching problem: the definition of athletes’ exercise tolerance levels. Drawing on the sociology of knowledge, we focus on coaches’ conceptions of exercise tolerance and the sociocultural framing of their reflections. The qualitative analyses of 16 interviews with German youth elite sport coaches reveal that the coaches’ understanding of exercise tolerances is changed by a variety of aspects (e.g., athletes’ injury status, up-coming events, coaching philosophy). Furthermore, the coaches rely heavily on socioculturally shaped experiential knowledge. This results in subjective and flexible definitions of exercise tolerance, which are functional, but bear risks of inappropriate loading.

  • Navigating sports medical practice in women’s artistic gymnastics: a socio-cultural analysis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Women's Artistic Gymnastics. Socio-cultural Perspectives. Roslyn Kerr, Natalie Barker-Ruchti, Carly Stewart, Gretchen Kerr (red.). - London : Routledge. - 9781003007005 ; , s. 216-230
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Elite level women’s artistic gymnastics (WAG) is a high risk activity. Gymnasts are prone to frequent injuries, and a variety of pain and overuse conditions with debilitating long-term effects. Research has repeatedly addressed coaches and national governing bodies’ role in protecting elite gymnasts from harm. While crucial for prevention and treatment, there is a paucity of research on the role, perspectives, and professional realities of sports medical support staff in WAG. In this chapter, we address this gap in research. Understanding medical work as socio-cultural practice, we use interviewing to explore the professional realities of a sports physician and a physiotherapist in one European WAG team. Our findings show that medical professionals may face pain, injury, and disordered eating in gymnasts and that their professional role understanding in WAG is pragmatically aligned with the necessities of elite sport. However, they navigate medical practice between ‘medical risk-taking’ and, in some cases, use their position to pressure coaches to care for gymnasts. Further, we conclude by arguing that cultural and organisational contingencies limit medical practice in WAG, which leads us to close with recommendations for improvements.
