  • Gardeners’ perspectives and practices in relation to plants in motion
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Routledge Handbook of Biosecurity and Invasive Species. - Abingdon, Oxon ; New York, NY : Routledge, 2021. : Routledge. - 9780815354895 ; , s. 226-239
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The establishment of introduced species in new environments is today widely acknowledged as a potential threat to biodiversity, and many plants that are known to be invasive have obviously spread from gardens. Thus, in the context of biosecurity, we need to consider how contemporary gardeners think about which plants and animals are welcome in their gardens. In this chapter we look at vegetation in motion from a cultural and social point of view, with a particular focus on some of many different ways in which people are involved in spreading of plants, both desired and undesired ones. We do this by investigating everyday practices of gardeners in Sweden, and not least the common habit of sharing plants, in order to highlight the social and cultural aspects of the spread of species. Among the gardeners in this study it is obvious that the dynamics and vitality of plants is often regarded as an asset, but also sometimes as problem, when plants simply grow too much. Understandings of the relationship between gardens and surrounding environments, as well as between nature and culture, have changed over time, and are continuously changing. As plants have the ability to multiply and spread in various ways, both on their own and with the help of humans, there is a need to acknowledge the role of human as well as non-human agencies in order to understand the complexity of these interactions. Inspired by Tim Ingold we find it useful to think about both gardeners and plants as ‘biosocial becomings’. In order to address the threat posed by invasive species, we propose that it is important to improve our understanding of what happens in everyday biosocial encounters between people, plants and other species.

  • Skötsel av historiska trädgårdar: granhäckar
  • 2019

  • Ways of Tacit Knowing: A film article
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: FORMakademisk. 14 (2). - : OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University. - 1890-9515.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A common way to describe craft knowledge is through the figure of speech it's in your hands. With this description, there is no attempt made to explain the complex knowledge which is present in craft. One reason why these explanations are rarely articulated is that they consist of sensory judgments. With this film, Ways of Tacit Knowing, we argue that, with the help of film media, it is possible to decode and articulate some of the knowledge content embodied in craft that is often described as tacit knowledge. We, the producers of this film, are experienced craftspeople, which makes us at once both subjects and objects of the research—a methodology akin to auto-ethnography. In the film, we present examples of situations from practice in our different craft fields: the practice in cultivation and management in gardening and the practice of culinary crafts situated in the kitchen and in the dining room. This film presents a dialogue of knowledge in action with craftspeople who discuss their sensory-based judgments in crafts.

  • ‘It’s in my hands’: Analytical tools for the communication of craft knowledge.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: FORMakademisk. - : OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University. - 1890-9515.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Craft knowledge is built from examples of experience, and when experiences from many people are gathered and compared, new knowledge is developed. This requires either socialization between practitioners or a systematic collection of practice descriptions, such as in a manual. However, there is always a risk that knowledge that is difficult to put into words will never be communicated. The aim of this paper is to show how theoretical perspectives can be used as analytical tools to help us develop methods that support the communication of craft knowledge. Using an approach of research through practice in the field of gardening, and combining a tripartite theory of knowledge with a SECI-model analysis, I will discuss how it is possible to make practitioners’ subjective knowledge more readily available to others.

  • Plant propagation practice - the start of horticulture
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Presenterad vid konferensen Culture(s) in Sustainable Future: theories, policies, practices, Helsinki, Finland 6-8 maj 2015. - 9789513961800
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Almost every garden and park is built up with cultivated plants, and somewhere the cultivation starts with a propagation process. Knowledge of plant propagation is based on a long tradition of horticultural activities in which the transfer of knowledge has mainly been restricted to the working process. The aim of this presentation is to discuss possibilities to develop strategies for keeping this knowledge when the plant propagation activities are decreasing. The discussion is based on my ongoing PhD- project, which has the overall aim to study how information of plant propagation practice can be classified in order to function as instructions. In the last century the propagation of local horticultural plants has declined and almost ceased to exist as a gardening practice in standard maintenance in Sweden’s heritage gardens and public parks. The common approach to renew a lost perennial plant, bush or tree is to buy a similar plant in a garden centre or a nursery. But the activities of propagation have also decreased in the nurseries. The European nursery industry offer so called “plug plants”, small plants propagated in a large scale, for a price that make the Swedish nurseries own propagation costs appear to be too expensive. The consequence is a risk of drainage of gardening craft skills, and a loss of both local plants and plants of historic interests. The sustainability in these choices may also be questioned. With examples from commercial perennial nurseries and Gothenburg Botanical Garden a possible strategy for communication and development of horticultural practice will be presented based on a classifying model for practice of plant propagation.

  • Trädgårdsmästarens förökningsmetoder – schema och katalog över förökningsdelar vid vegetativ förökning av fleråriga örtartade växter
  • 2013
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this licentiate thesis is to gather and classify information about traditional vegetative propagation of perennial herbaceous plants. This thesis is the first, self-contained part of a survey of propagation methods used by horticulturists. The overarching issue concerns horticultural craft practice and knowledge as explanations, understanding and skills in the conditions, processes, and procedures in plant propagation practices. Knowledge of plant propagation is based on a long tradition of horticultural activities in which the transfer of knowledge has mainly been restricted to the working process. However, in recent decades, the number of professional propagators has decreased. As a consequence, there is an increasing risk that some aspects of this knowledge will be lost to future generations. Admittedly, written information about plant propagation is scattered in various sources, but it is difficult to find instructions that clearly describe the various procedures and action steps, and the variants of the same, included in the propagation process. In order to determine and evaluate the relationship between instructions of how work is (or ought to be) performed and plants of various kinds requires either that you have extensive practical experience, or that you have a clear method for organizing, analysing and drawing conclusions about performance in propagation practices. One part of this method is structuring of information. Therefore the question to be considered in this study is: What is the best way to organize collected information on vegetative propagation methods in order for it to function as instructions for the practical work? Information is obtained by observations in nurseries, in dialogue with professional growers and an examination of instructions in written sources. Part of the methodology was that the investigator was involved as an active participant. A key part of the inquiry has therefore been my own propagation trials and experiments carried out with students. The result is a model for sorting and structuring propagation methods based on the plant parts used for vegetative propagation. The model is presented as a scheme and a catalogue. In addition to the aim of constructing the scheme and the catalogue, an additional purpose is to take the first steps towards the propagation instructions in focus in the second part of the study. The paper concludes with a discussion of possible model expansions, as well as how the model can be related to various growth habits. The underlying idea is that the link between reproduction and growth habit may reveal untested combinations of propagation techniques and plant species. It should also be possible to provide answers to why and how the various methods of vegetative propagation work, and how they might evolve.
