  • Faithful Stewards of God's Creation? : Swedish Evangelical Denominations and Climate Change
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Religions. - : MDPI AG. - 2077-1444. ; 13:5, s. 465-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies from the United States (U.S.) show that opposition to climate policy is strong among some Christian groups, especially White evangelical Protestants. Much of this opposition is channelled through organisations such as the Cornwall Alliance, which argue against climate measures on religious, economic and what they claim to be science-based grounds. In the present study, we investigated to what extent these convictions were present among Swedish evangelical denominations. Representatives from the Evangelical Free Church, the Pentecostal Alliance, the Swedish Alliance Mission, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church were interviewed to identify the denominations' views on the scientific underpinnings of climate change and the moral implications of climate policy. Our data show that the denominations' views differ markedly from those expressed by climate-oppositional evangelical groups in the U.S. The denominations held homogenous views on the legitimacy of climate science, expressed a clear biblical mandate for climate policy based on the notion of human stewardship, and believed that climate change was inextricably linked to poverty and, thus, had to be addressed. Our results point to the need for further studies on the factors behind acceptance and denial of climate science within and between faith-based and other communities in different countries.

  • The aesthetic turn : Exploring the religious dimensions of digital technology
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Approaching Religion. - 1799-3121. ; 6:2, s. 156-163
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The arena for developing digital technology has undergone an aesthetic turn, broadening the focus from a functionalist approach producing centralized systems in the 1970s and 1980s to an increased awareness of the aesthetic aspects of the individual user’s interaction with technology in the 1990s and 2000s. Within the academic research fields studying digital technology (e.g. Human-Computer Interaction and Interaction Design) the aesthetic turn has resulted in a shift from a strong emphasis on user behaviour to an increased interest in aesthetic perspectives on the role of the designer, the design process, and the design material. Within these fields, aesthetics has often been interpreted as belonging to the realm of the individual; personal experiences such as pleasure, engagement, and emotions have been emphasized in both technology development and technology research. Aesthetics is not, however, only an individual phenomenon but also has relational and structural components that need to be acknowledged. Structural aspects of aesthetics condition the possibilities for individuals interacting with digital technology. Thus, the tension between individual and relational aspects of aesthetics in digital technology also reflects a tension between freedom and limitation; between change and permanence; between destabilizing and stabilizing forces. Such a broadened understanding of aesthetics offers a model of digital technology that roughly corresponds to Mark C. Taylor’s definition of religion. Taylor argues that religion is constituted by, on the one hand, a figuring moment characterized by structural stability and universality, and, on the other hand, a disfiguring moment characterized by disruption, particularity, and change. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the aesthetic turn and Taylor’s definition of religion to illustrate similarities between the two, suggesting possible religious dimensions of digital technology and how that can inform our understanding of people’s interaction with digital technology.

  • Medeltidskyrkan i Uppland : restaurering och rumslig förnyelse under 1900-talet
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this work is to illuminate the history of restoration in 20th century Sweden by studying restorations of medieval Uppland churches, in the hope of highlighting the debate and conflicts surrounding the ideologies forming the framework of church restorations and identifying the crucial considerations. It is an attempt to depicting church restorations with the focus of attention on the function of the church interior, but also on ways of achieving a credible design appropriate to the present. Theological and liturgical issues and their connection with usability constitute an important background. The study takes as its starting point the architect’s mission as the person in charge of the restoration project. The heritage conservation aspects and issues of principle concerning preservation are present as a basic precondition of every restoration assignment. The study demonstrates the complexity of the design of the various church interiors. The 20th century restorations have been concerned with modernisation, with questions of materials and with the character of the church interiors, but they have also hinged on individual architects and their differing attitudes towards preservation and new design, and on the relation between restoration and spatial renewal. This study encompasses the whole of the 20th century, but with special emphasis on the period between about 1920 and 1980. First of all a general count was taken of all major restorations in the province of Uppland. Their time-related character prompted a division of the 20th century into four periods, and one church from each period was chosen for closer study. The four churches chosen were Tensta, Skånela, Knivsta and Orkesta. More examples were then used to illustrate the complexity of the restorations. Studies of the church buildings, in the in-depth studies and in supplementary examples from the province as a whole, were then viewed in relation to overarching issues concerning restoration tradition, values and viewpoints held by the heritage conservation authorities, parochial needs for changes to the church interiors, but also discussions concerning the functional and artistic design of new churches and how those discussions were reflected in the historic churches.
