- On a mountain hill outside Fredrika, a small village in the rural north of Sweden, a standing Buddha statue and the seated statue of Luang Pho Thuat invoke reverence from visiting Buddhists. The plans of a large-scale temple and meditation centre have also invoked hope of religious tourism and economic growth in an area highly affected by depopulation. The Temple Mount, as it is referred to locally, has, on the one hand, become a source of religious power, not only for Thai Buddhist pilgrims, but also for other religious networks that has established themselves in the area. On the other hand, Fredrika has also become a contested religious space. The article discusses the background of the Temple Mount as well as contrasting examples of usual establishment patterns of Thai Buddhist temples in Sweden, highlighting translocal religious activity at Fredrika, showing how diaspora Thai Buddhism becomes intertwined with other religious networks.

- The Hindu Vaiśeṣika philosophers' main concerns in relation to liberation from rebirth are knowing (jñāna) and acting (karma). In connection to this, ideas of a disembodied self (ātman) as eternal, noncognizing, and uncreated are important factors within their thought. They furthermore purport a creator god who is responsible for a world wherein the selves could be liberated. The actions required are performance of religious duties and refraining from unethical behavior. Through the practice of yoga a human being can attain a mindset suitable for such actions. The Vaiśeṣikas' main interests are to describe the bodily self, its capacity for knowledge, and what this self should know, hence epistemology and ontology are central aspects of their philosophizing.

- This article takes as its point of departure the question of how Wilhelm Halbfass, Daya Krishna, and Jitendranath Mohanty have conceptualized tradition in relation to “Indian” philosophy. They have all reacted to, and criticized, homogeneous and static conceptions of Indian philosophies, and by articulating different ways of apprehending tradition they have tried to come to terms with such limiting images. My reading of their texts has been informed by a questioning of how they, in turn, conceptualize tradition. Most of all this is related to the tendency, on the one hand, to stress that tradition is open-ended and dynamic but at the same time to speak of tradition as one singular and universalizable phenomenon, sometimes even as a reified phenomenon (“it”). This discussion is connected to a concern of mine regarding how to conceptualize a plurality and heterogeneity while avoiding a reifying, generalizing language. Toward the end I present a reading of the Nyāyasūtra and how the concept of siddhānta could be understood in the light of three of its commentaries. This reading is here framed as the practical and philosophical outcome of the reflections made in the analysis of Halbfass, Krishna, and Mohanty.

- År 874 inledde den tolfte shiitiske imamen Al-Mahdi ett liv i underjorden. Sedan dess har de rättslärda brottats med frågan om hur de ska leva tills han återkommer. Inom islams historia finns en lång kamp mellan de religiösa ledarna och de sekulära politiska över vilka som är bäst lämpade att styra de muslimska länderna, men den händelse under 1900-talet som framför alla andra markerade religionens – eller rättare sagt de religiösa ledarnas – återkomst på den politiska scenen var revolutionen i Iran 1979. Bland de shiitiska rättslärda finns dock många olika politiska föreställningar. Skillnaderna beror till stor del på rådande politiska och historiska omständigheter, sociala strukturer och ekonomiska förhållanden. Men är dessa omständigheter tillräckliga för att förstå varför en grupp shiitiska rättslärda drogs till revolutionär radikalism, andra till politisk pragmatism och ytterligare andra till total avhållsamhet från den politiska scenen? Och vad har förhållande mellan tro och förnuft för betydelse för religion och politik i de olika shiitiska skolorna?

- From Mixed Choir to Worship Team. Historical and Theological Perspectives on Song Groups in the Swedish Free ChurchesThe study gives an overview of different types of choirs in the Free Churches in Sweden, especially in the Baptist Union. The aim is to discuss the ecclesial character of choirship, a concept that is introduced here, and to present a deeper understanding of it as a fundamental expression of being church. The underlying hypothesis is that different kinds of choirship create different kinds of ecclesial communities. And vice versa: different kinds of ecclesial communities create different kinds of choirship.From the more than 160 year old history of Baptist choirs in Sweden the study identifies and discusses theologically five different choirships: mixed choirs singing SATB, string bands and choirs, revival campaign choirs, youth choirs/gospel choirs, struggle song choirs, and worship (or song) teams. Other types, such as men’s choirs and children’s choirs, are also mentioned. The study makes comparisons between the choirs in the Baptist Union and other Free Churches, especially the Mission Covenant Church and the Pentecostals. An important aspect of the study is also the cultural and socio-political context of the choirships. The choirs’ musical styles and genres both reflect and contrast with the traditions, trends and fashions of society.Different elements in the choirship are revealed and analysed: the organisation of the choir, the spirituality of the choirship and its ecclesial community, the different musical styles, the role of choirship in the liturgy, the conductor, the message in the song texts and the frequency of rehearsal and performance. The study shows that the practice of choirship includes an ongoing evaluation of two distinct aspects of this art: form and content. The history of the Baptist choirs addresses the challenge of keeping form and content together.
