- It is often claimed that in Christian tradition trees and plants are reduced to passive material created for human exploitation, that the only important living creatures are Adam and Eve. But could such a view have less to do with Christianity as a religion and more to do with Cartesian notions in Western modernity? Earlier Christians undoubtedly exhibited a fascination with trees that exceeded a mere interest in the wood of the Cross or typologies thereof. According to literature produced by pre-modern Christians, they interacted actively with the arboreal realm, and trees interacted with them. The same body of literature suggests a sense of affinity between human beings and wooden beings. Exploring diverse texts about trees from the first Christian millennium, the article demonstrates that many Christians ascribed agency to plants. Trees could behave and communicate in various ways, those studied here were pious and acted with devotion in relation to the holy.

- Få, om noen, kan gjøre Jomfru Maria rangen stridig som mest betydningsfull kvinneskikkelse i den kristne verden – iallfall slik religionen ser ut i dag. Blant katolikker og ortodokse er hun gjenstand for en nesten bunnløs folkelig hengivenhet, og mange protestanter nærer dyp kjærlighet til og respekt for henne. Også muslimer verden over oppfatter Jesu mor som et forbilde og søker blant annet hennes hjelp mot barnløshet. Feminister har omfavnet Maria som en unik kvinnelig person i kristendommens og islams mannsdominerte verdener, mens andre feminister har forkastet henne som patriarkale religioners våte drøm av et kvinneideal. Fra første stund har hennes liv vært omstridt, innsyltet i en kompleks historie full av motsetninger og paradokser, av undertrykkelse og frigjøring. 2000 europeiske år skulle kunne leses i hennes håndflater.

- This article presents a reading of two Greek Marian hymns written in the centuries after the Ephesus Council: the Annunciation Hymn by Romanos the Melodist, which is the earliest extant Annunciation hymn we have, and the well-known Akathistos Hymn. Many scholars believe the latter to be a fifth century composition, and not – as have been claimed by such important scholars as Constantinos A. Trypanis – a work by Romanos, who wrote his poetry in the sixth century. This article is based on the same assumption. By contrasting the Marian images in these pieces of poetry it is able to conclude that the ideas of the Virgin are inherently different. Thus it is highly unlikely that the two compositions come from the same hand. The reading further complicates the notion that the development in Mariology has gone from “low” to “high”; on the contrary the older hymn seems to represent a more elevated view of the Virgin than does the younger one. Romanos rather brings the Virgin down to dwell among his congregated listeners.
