- During the Antarctica expedition CHAQ2020, several cultural heritage sites – remains from the Swedish South Polar Expedition (1901–1903) – were documented using a range of different techniques and technologies. These physical monuments and environments are for all intents and purposes unavailable for most researchers due to their remote location and are also threatened by the effects of climate change. Hence, the deployed documentation techniques and technologies were selected both as a consequence of the inherently difficult conditions in Antarctica, where their reliance, durability, and speed were key considerations, but also for their perceived ability to document the unique and fragile environment. The documentation was carried out with the double intention of both allowing for observations in situ through processes of analytical drawings and data capture, but also capturing the environment as broadly and deeply as possible, in essence making a copy of it open for studies of unknown unknowns, that could serve as a source material for research questions still undefined. Hence, with the documentation of the winter station on Snow Hill Island as a case study, and with a perspective on documentation as a method through which to process, preserve, and disseminate information, this article serves to critically detail, compare, and evaluate the digital techniques and technologies that the expedition deployed to capture architectural elements and spatial contexts, and the data that could be obtained through these.

- Digital technology is transforming the assemblage and dissemination of historical information. Museums, libraries, archives, and universities increasingly modify their digital research infrastructures in order to make data open and available. The imminent assessment and representation of historical data has admittedly challenged the boundaries of historical knowledge and generated new research questions. The process of reconstructing, visualizing and rendering historical data has equally developed together with technology. This is the case in both academic and heritage contexts and in less immediatedly obvious popular uses, such as the increasingly significant presence and use of history within videogames. Regardless of specific context, as this collection of articles shows, the process of digitally capturing and representing historical data is often analogous to and determined by the digital platform used.

- Den här kunskapsöversikten är ett försök att utkristallisera relevant forskning såväl som praktisk kunskap för Mistra Urban Futures om urbana kvaliteter. Översikten är kopplad till ett arbete som genomförts under vår och höst 2011 med syfte att skapa underlag för den Strategiska plan som utgör grunden för Mistra Urban Futures planering och aktiviteter. Under våren 2011 arbetade sex grupper med varsitt kunskapsfält – urbana kvaliteter, urban förändring (”transitions”), urbana kulturer, urbana rättigheter, urban tillgänglighet och urban uthållighet. Tanken var att dessa skulle utgöra de sex bärande fokusområdena för centrets verksamhet. Sedermera kom dessa sex områden att slås ihop till tre - FAIR, GREEN och DENSE – vilka nu utgör de tre övergripande problem- och kunskapsområdena för Mistra Urban Futures.

- Stora strukturförändringar i samhället får genomgripande betydelse för kulturarvet- hur vi ser på det och hur vi använder det. Gamlestaden i Göteborg visar på många sätt på industrisamhällets uppgång och fall i Göteborg. Det var här SKF - Svenska kullagerfabriken - etablerades och utvecklades till ett internationellt storföretag. Idag sker dock den industriella utvecklingen på andra platser, och Gamlestaden har samtidigt gått från att ha varit en plats i stadens periferi, till en attraktiv och centralt belägen knutpunkt som skapat nya utvecklingskrafter. I Gamlestaden möts nu allt: ett virrvarr av tågräls för regionala persontransporter och farligt gods, en hop spårvägar och bussar till och från Göteborgs bosättningar i nordöstra periferin, sjöfart på landets största flod Göta älv, en planerad tunnel under älven som förbinder den norra motorledsutfarten med den östra, bostäder, industri och kontor, människor med olika vanor och ursprung. De olika kapitlen i antologin pekar på behov av nya angreppssätt och metoder i samhällets kulturmiljöarbete. Genom att fokusera olika perspektiv på Gamlestadens särdrag och egenskaper, hur dessa kan beskrivas och karaktäriseras vill författarna visa att det som kallas för kulturarv inte är en gång för alla givet, utan behöver omprövas och diskuteras inför varje större stadsförändring.

- SPACE AND COURT Swedish rural district court-houses 1734-1970; conceived, materialized and used Abstract Although the court of justice is a fundamental institution of our society, the socio-spatial conditions and past of the Swedish district court have rarely been objects of academic research. The aim of this thesis is to examine the design of rural district court-houses from the period of 1734-1970, starting out from the often-assumed causal relation between function and form. Is it possible to understand the design of these buildings by relating to its function? Departing from Henri Lefèbvre’s theory on the social production of space, this thesis deals with the different stages and participants in the building process and describes the court-houses as they were conceived, built and used. The time delimitation corresponds to a legal provision, which stipulated that inhabitants in all judicial districts were responsible for building and maintaining local court-houses. The thesis is in part based on a national survey of law court buildings, but also on four case studies, and alternates between an overview perspective and close-up studies. In the mid-18th century, court-houses did not contain only the court-room and the two chambers that were laid down by the legal provision; they were larger and contained several different rooms. At this early point, the conception of such buildings implied more than a mere court-session-house, as the actual practice included other functions. The study further shows that around year 1800, their design was the result of an already limited number of established conventions of spatial configuration and form, identical to those classicist principles which characterized the residences of local officials. It was not founded on articulated needs; yet, the choice of forms was certainly not arbitrary, since court-houses thus became part of the official architecture. It is further evident that certain participants tried to spatially separate the various activities within the buildings, mainly by modifying the established structure without changing the symmetrical appearance. Nevertheless, as representative as they may have appeared, these buildings were thoroughly integrated into the everyday, agricultural landscape. At the turn of the next century, most layouts still related to the 18th century idea, the principle feature of which was constituted by the large court-room at the centre of the configuration. Although larger in general and with an urban character, the design was poorly adapted to the practices of the now permanent administration, which required large office premises. In parallel to earlier periods, the architecture rather resembled a private mansion, a suitable solution when the second floor of the building formed a spacious flat for the judge. A major change in style and configuration took place after the Second World War, when classicist principles were abandoned and the functions distinctly distributed within the structure and exposed in the exterior. Nevertheless, there was still no court-house architecture and, however radically implemented, the idea of separation was not novel. Indeed, the very wording of the legal provision can be considered a good example of such strivings, as can the attempts by 19th and early 20th century architects to modify conventional structures. The habits of court-house users only gradually concurred with the representations of court-house space. In practice, the buildings were more multi-functional and the social patterns and routines more durable than the conceptions behind new architectural designs had assumed.
