- This licentiate-thesis aims to describe and analyse the popularisation of what was called “scientific genealogy” in Sweden during the early 20th century. The study is constructed around two case-studies where I describe and analyse two different attempts to popularise “scientific genealogy” amongst Swedish amateur family-researchers, a knowledge-practise first formulated by the Historian Ottokar Lorenz in 1898. According to the proponents of these attempts, amateur family-resear-chers were not only expected to collect names, dates of birth and death and other traditional genealogical data but also other parameters, e.g. inherited diseases, physical and psychological traits, personality traits, and in some cases and if possible shape of skulls and predominant race-type; parameters that in the time-period was seen as being of scientific interest. I examine if these attempts can be understood as following the same mode of knowledge-production as the field networks described by Jeremy Vetter. This mode of knowledge-production involved amateurs as information-gatherers to acquire larger sets of data than earlier possible. I conclude that it is fruitful to understand the attempts to popularise “scientific genealogy” to laymen as a part of broader trends in historical changes of knowledge-production. Furthermore, the tendency to try to include laymen in broader surveys also made it possible to use the attempts to include laymen in the knowledge-production, as a tool to legitimize political ideas and ideologies – including but not exclusive to visions of eugenics and racial hygiene.

- In 2000 when Sweden signed the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities the Roma minority became one of the acknowledged national minorities in the country. It meant that the rights of the Roma mi-nority would be safeguarded and the knowledge of its history and culture would be spread. In that context, the Swedish school, with its founded as-signment of democracy, was given an important role. The education was to communicate the multicultural values of the society and to make visible the history and culture of the Roma minority.The school books used in teaching today do not meet these demands. The view of the Roma minority given in school books is often inadequate and simplified. The present study will therefore examine a different type of edu-cational material used in schools and teaching, The Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company‟s programs of history and social studies regarding the Roma minority. Starting in postcolonial theory as well as critical dis-course analysis the study examines how the picture of the Roma cultural and ethnic identity in the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company‟s material has been displayed and possibly changed during the period of 1975 to 2013.The results show a picture of Roma which, both in form and content, con-sists of some clearly demarcated discursive categories. The obvious continui-ty of the categories gives a picture of static and invariable Roma identity. At the same time this unambiguous picture is broken both by giving the existing discourses new meaning and also adding new discourses. The complexity and nuances become more prominent and the Roma identity is integrated in common Swedish history telling. The changes in the view of Roma, given by the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company, can mainly be explained by the change of the Swedish immigration and minority policy and, as a conse-quence of this, the change of the school‟s mission regarding knowledge communication of Sweden as a multicultural country.

Planteringar vid järnvägen. Funktion och organisation under stambanornas första tid

- I den här licentiatuppsatsen undersöks planteringar vid de första stambanorna i Sverige mellan åren 1855–1875. När järnvägar för persontrafik började byggas i mitten av 1800-talet innebar de en stor förändring av samhället, landskapet och människors vardagsliv. Inom det nya stora tekniska systemet användes planteringar för olika funktioner – till prydnad, nytta och skydd. Undersökningen tar sin utgångspunkt från fyra exempel – Alingsås, Eslöv, Stockholms södra station och Hallsberg. Vi får följa hur arbetet med de första planteringarna gick till, hur planteringsverksamheten inom Statens järnvägar fick en egen organisation och vilka motiv som låg bakom planteringarna. Planteringar vid järnvägen sätts också in i sitt sammanhang genom en utblick till den internationella händelseutvecklingen och samtidens syn på naturen, park och trädgård. Licentiatuppsatsen utgår från tidigare okänt arkivmaterial och visar att planteringar var en given del i de nya järnvägsanläggningarna och i omformandet av landskapet. This licentiate thesis examines gardens and plantations along the first Swedish state railways. The purpose of the investigation is to depict the planting activities during the years 1855–1875 by studying contemporary archival sources. In the field of railway history the technology in the railway system, the vehicles and the impact of the railways on society are largely investigated. However, the green areas connected to the railways are quite unknown and not acknowledged as a cultural heritage. Starting with four early stations – Alingsås, Eslöv, Stockholm and Hallsberg – several kinds of archival materials have been found in different archives. The material is analysed using the concepts role, meaning and organization. The licentiate thesis investigates when the planting activities were initiated, what kind of plantations were made along the railways, what role they played and how the organization behind the planting activities was arranged. By analysing the shifting organization of the planting activities, this study has rediscovered large quantities of archival material hitherto believed to have been discarded. This investigation intends to contribute to the understanding of how railway areas were designed and why the creation of attractive green environments was considered so important during the second half of the 19th century.
