  • Minuting. Rethinking the Ordinary Through the Ritual of Transversal Listening
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: VIS. - : Society for Artistic Research. - 2003-024X. ; :5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This exploratory essay introduces selected sound recordings along with notes and observations from Minuting – a practice of sonic journaling I have performed daily since July 2010 in numerous locations and settings. I weave these observations together in a way that resonates closely with the idea of repetition, in multiple forms: protest, automation, cycle, and ritual, as well as the repetition inherent to my acts of recording. While introducing sounds from the archive of Minuting, I reflect on how this constrained and systematically enacted form of listening, recording, and re-listening leads to a transversal type of sonic reflexivity. It is a form of alertness to sound that stretches beyond the immediate resonance of the 'now' – towards spatially and temporarily distant, yet to some extent intertwined, objects, subjects, events, and environments. The text evolves across three interrelated layers: annotated recordings from the project's archive, a set of thoughts and associations triggered by re-listening to the material, and a discursive analysis that opens up the project to a dialogue with other thematically resonant debates and practices. Drawing on perspectives from media studies, the philosophy of technology, sound studies and durational art, I discuss Minuting as an art work, a creative constraint and a transversal listening practice. Lastly, I propose it as an existential media technique for composing critical and reflective positions towards one's surrounding space, experience of time, and use of sound technologies.

  • Suomalaisen ydinvoimavastaisuuden perintöarkeologiaa [Arvsarkeologin för finländska antikärnkraftmedborgarrörelser]
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Muinaistutkija. - Helsinki : Suomen arkeologinen seura. - 0781-6790. ; 41:2, s. 5-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Tindra : Ett landskap i tidens spegel
  • 2009. - 1000

  • Farmer fidelity in the Canary Islands revealed by ancient DNA from prehistoric seeds
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Archaeological Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0305-4403 .- 1095-9238. ; 78, s. 78-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Canary Islands were settled in the first millennium AD by colonizers likely originating from North Africa. The settlers developed a farming economy with barley as the main crop. Archaeological evidence suggests the islands then remained isolated until European sea-travellers discovered and colonized them during the 14th and 15th centuries. Here we report a population study of ancient DNA from twenty-one archaeobotanical barley grains from Gran Canaria dating from 1050 to 1440 cal AD. The material showed exceptional DNA preservation and genotyping was carried out for 99 single nucleotide markers. In addition 101 extant landrace accessions from the Canary Islands and the western Mediterranean were genotyped. The archaeological material showed high genetic similarity to extant landraces from the Canary Islands. In contrast, accessions from the Canary Islands were highly differentiated from both Iberian and North African mainland barley. Within the Canary Islands, landraces from the easternmost islands were genetically differentiated from landraces from the western islands, corroborating the presence of pre-Hispanic barley cultivation on Lanzarote. The results demonstrate the potential of population genetic analyses of ancient DNA. They support the hypothesis of an original colonization, possibly from present day Morocco, and subsequent isolation of the islands and reveal a farmer fidelity to the local barley that has lasted for centuries.

  • Introduction : Transcending the aDNA Revolution
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of social archaeology. - : SAGE Publications. - 1469-6053 .- 1741-2951. ; 21:2, s. 149-156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past decade, technological developments known as “next-generation sequencing” have enabled genome-wide analyses of ancient DNA (aDNA) to take place more quickly and cheaply than before. These developments have had important consequences for archaeological knowledge and practice, most notably in the rapidly growing field of archaeogenomics (also referred to as archaeogenetics or paleogenomics).

  • Long-term Degree Program Success in Maritime Archaeology
  • 2020
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A master’s program in maritime archaeology is planned at the University of Helsinki with inauguration in 2023 if facilitated by the Faculty. In support of this planning, research into what factors contribute to the long-term success of a degree program in maritime archaeology was carried out. Professionals with existing and past work experience in higher education in maritime archaeology and underwater heritage management were interviewed and an online questionnaire was distributed. The interview and questionnaire results are combined in this report with a review of literature in the development of higher education in maritime archaeology. The results indicate that the most common reason for a degree program to be cancelled is staff discontinuity. Maritime archaeology programs are often run with minimum staff and when a person retires or leaves, they may not be replaced. Two factors that can be anticipated in curriculum design were identified as important for the long-term success of a degree program in maritime archaeology. 1) Integration of teaching with other teaching at the home institution, most importantly, archaeology, heritage studies, and history, for careful balance between theory and practice. 2) Close collaboration and engagement in dialogue with other academic and non-academic institutions and communities for successful anticipation of expectations and inclusion in teaching. Drawing from these results the report also includes a suggestion for a curriculum in maritime archaeology.

  • Maritime Archaeology in Finland: History and Future Tasks
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Maritime Archaeology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1557-2285 .- 1557-2293. ; 16:3, s. 333-351
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article provides an account of the history, present state, and possible future directions of Finnish maritime archaeology in order to elucidate certain aspects characteristic of the field. In the Finnish context, academia and the heritage sector are historically interconnected, and professionals have successfully assumed responsibilities in both. Research opportunities, however, have been more numerous at the Finnish Heritage Agency (FHA) than in academia, whereas the focus has been on well-preserved wrecks mainly from seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This can be explained by the great number of registered shipwrecks from the historical periods being managed by the FHA. Well-preserved shipwrecks are also central for hobby divers’ interest that has been historically paramount for the development of the field. At the same time, discontinuities in academic training of maritime archaeologists have created a situation where opportunities for long-term and in-depth research at universities have been few. Future prospects of Finnish maritime archaeology are discussed with respect to the current state, and the interconnectedness of the heritage management sector, academically trained maritime archaeologists, and avocational diving societies and volunteers is emphasised as a key element in continued development.
