  • Interregional trade at Hala Sultan Tekke, Cyprus: Analysis and chronology of imports
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 2352-409X .- 2352-4103. ; 47, s. 1-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the results from extensive and intensive field work at Hala Sultan Tekke, Cyprus, supported by scientific analyses. They shed light on the scope of interregional trade in which this Late Bronze Age harbour city participated from the 15th to the 12th centuries B.C. Although the results from older excavations suggested the city’s engagement in interregional trade, these preliminary conclusions were based on chronologically and geographically restricted material and only a few scientific analyses, which have since been complemented and partly revised. It is now clear that long-distance exchange, based on the large-scale intra-urban production and distribution of copper, involved regional and more distant suppliers of coveted goods, and resulted in the transition of the settlement from a late 17th century B.C. village to a trade hub with a minimum extent of 25 ha.

  • Tall Abu al-Kharaz - The Swedish Jordan Expedition 2012: Fifteenth Season Preliminary Excavation Report
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Annual of the Department of Antiquities of Jordan. - 0449-1564. ; 57:2013, s. 285-292
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 2012 season was devoted to the earliest Iron Age occupation of the site, which was discovered in 2009 in Area 9 and further exposed in 2010 and 2011 (Fischer and Feldbacher 2010, 2011; Fischer and Bürge 2012). A 46 m long two-storey compound with 22 rooms from the conventional Iron Age I period, viz. the local Phase IX, has partly been exposed. The study of the unique cell-plan architecture and new material for a refined stratigraphy1, including the collection of first-class radiocarbon samples from primary floor contexts, were amongst the main objectives of the 2012 season of excavation. Numerous radiocarbon dates of short-lived samples from Phase IX point to a date around 1100 BC for the destruction of the compound.

  • The New Swedish Cyprus Expedition 2010. Excavations at Dromolaxia Vizatzia/Hala Sultan Tekke. Preliminary results.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Opuscula. Annual of the Swedish Institutes at Athens and Rome. - 2000-0898. ; 4:4/2011, s. 69-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Determination of the complete occupational sequence of the site, including investigation of pre-12th century levels which were thoroughly studied by P. Åström since the 1970s, is the main task of the planned project. During the course of the expedition (NSCE11) in spring 2010 a ground- penetrating radar survey (GPR) was carried out at Dromolaxia Vizatzia/Hala Sultan Tekke in Area 6, leading to the discovery of a large Late Cypriote complex. The compound is bordered to the north by a substantial wall, against which nine rooms (so far) could be exposed. Two occupational phases have been verified but there are indications of a third. The suggested functions of the various structures of the most recent phase are as living, working, storage and administration spaces. The rich find contexts point to the production of textiles and metal objects, and the locally produced pottery is generally of high quality. There are also many imports, mainly from the Mycenaean sphere of culture. The locally produced vessels from Phase 2 include the “Creature krater” which is a masterpiece of high artistic standard. Another piece of elevated artistry is the part of a “Warrior vase”.

  • Cultural Influences of the Sea Peoples in Transjordan: The Early Iron Age at Tell Abu al-Kharaz
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Zeitschrift des Deutschen Palästina-Vereins. - 0012-1169. ; 129:2, s. 132-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tell Abu al-Kharaz, a tell of 12ha in the Central Jordan Valley, was occupied for several millennia from the Early Bronze Age onwards. During previous seasons most of the Early Iron Age remains have been found to be disturbed by later settlers. However, between 2009 and 2012 an extremely well-preserved and prosperous city quarter dating from Iron Age I, which corresponds to the local Phase IX, was exposed. The stone-built, two-storey, 46m long compound consists of 21 rooms (so far exposed) with walls still upright and standing to a height of more than 2m including preserved doorways with intact lintels. The inventories of these rooms, which comprised over two hundred complete vessels and other objects, were remarkably intact. Several vessels still contained carbonized seeds and other organic remains. Impulses from cultures to the west and north of the site could be identified. There are finds, which are inspired by Aegean / Cypriote material and which show affinities with the Philistine sphere of culture. Other finds come from Phoenicia, and yet others include locally-made Egyptianizing ceramics. The find contexts point to a fierce conflagration (most likely caused by an assault), which brought Phase IX to an end. The present study focuses on architecture and finds, and also intercultural exchange, in which the population of Tell Abu al-Kharaz was involved.

  • Early Bronze Age Goods Exchange in the Southern Levant. A Marxist Perspective. Approaches to Anthropological Archaeology. By I. Milevski
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Bibliotheca Orientalis. - 0006-1913. ; 70:3-4, s. 522-524
  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Despite several shortcomings, of which the title of the publication, the absence of references to publications of important Transjordanian sites, and the omission of recent literature are the most serious, the amount of data which has been collected by the author is creditable. The data are presented in an easily comprehensible manner; however, the reader of this publication is advised to approach Milevski's work critically. Nevertheless, the book is worthwhile reading and could certainly become more so when essential additional, up-to-date, literature is consulted.
