- The book, edited by Catharina Dyrssen, draws on coclusions from two larger artistic research project on urban sound environments, sound art, acoustic space, and spatial aspects of sound. The chapters comprise reflections on sound quality ans sound awareness, sound design and audio editing, technical solutions for artistic problems, and how sound can be composed and used in architectural and urban design. In text and images the four authors discuss a number of investigative projects performed within the artistic and interdisciplinary research group Urban Sound Institute.

- The AHA festival investigates the borders between art and science in a three-day event at the Chalmers University of Technology hosted by the Department of Architecture. An international festival intended to provide enlightening experiences, staging surprises, new thoughts and displaced perspectives that lead to alternative modes of thinking about the space between art and science. We invite scientists (physicists, historians, mathematicians, medical students), artists (dancers, musicians, painters, poets, chefs) and not least architects, who reside in these borderlands and wish to share their vision and work. The key intention is to celebrate both art and science as key knowledge building devices.

Det blev der denne bog ud af samt en udstilling på Charlottenborgs Forårsudstilling. Tak til Knud Höjgårds Fond, Fonden Realdania og Arkitektskolen Århus også for stötte til at skabe denne bog.

- Cellulose nanofibril hydrogel mixed with an aqueous solution of sodium alginate is a novel bio-based material suitable for 3D printing of lightweight membranes with exquisite properties and sustainable traits. However, fun- damental knowledge enabling its applications in architectural design is still missing. Hence, this study examines the macro-scale features of lightweight membranes from cellulose nanofibril-alginate hydrogel, relevant for the design of various interior architectural products, such as wall claddings, ceiling tiles, room partitions, tapestries, and window screens. Through iterative prototyping experiments involving robotic 3D printing of lightweight membranes, their upscaling potential is demonstrated. Correlations between toolpath designs and shrinkages are also characterized, alongside an in-depth analysis of coloration changes upon ambient drying. Further, the tunability potential of various architectural features, enabled by bespoke 3D printing toolpath design, is discussed and exemplified. The aim is to expose the wide palette of design possibilities for cellulose nanofibril-alginate membranes, encompassing variations in curvature, porosity, translucency, texture, patterning, pliability, and feature sizes. The results comprise an important knowledge foundation for the design and manufacturing of custom lightweight architectural products from cellulose nanofibril-alginate hydrogel. These products could be applied in a variety of new bio-based, sustainable interior building systems, replacing environmentally harmful, fossil-based solutions.

- I detta poddavsnitt talar vi om Andy Warhols fyra serigrafier ”Marilyn Monroe” från 1967, som finns på Göteborgs konstmuseum. Vi berättar mer om varför popkonsten skiljer sig så mycket från annan konst i sitt uttryck och formspråk, och hur det massmediala konsumtionssamhället som växte fram efter andra världskriget inspirerade popkonstnärer som Andy Warhol. Det är en tid då det enorma bildflödet i det offentliga rummet, som vi är så vana vid nuförtiden, precis tar fart och då konstnärer använder sig av de återkommande bilderna från underhållningsindustrin och reklamer för att kommentera på samhället och för att utplåna skillnaderna medan populärkultur och finkultur. Medan Andy Warhol hade full fokus att visa Monroe som en säljbar produkt från underhållningsindustrin, ser vi i detta poddavsnitt människan bakom motivet och berättar mer om den oerhörda personliga tragedin som Warhol, nästan omgående efter hennes självmord 1962, exploaterade ytterligare.

- The paper presents the test of a multi-value framework for the evaluation of energy producing solar shading on three cases of Swedish retrofitting projects. The evaluation framework was developed in collaboration between academics and industry partners in a transdisciplinary research project and considers: energy production, indoor environment and comfort, visibility and communication, aesthetics, design and process, and maintenance and repair. Results show that the model even though having few criteria gives a general and comprehensive feed-back about the outcomes, challenges and success of the projects. None of the projects scores high in all aspects,instead they exemplify different approaches to energy producing solar shading. All three have shading and low maintenance as important criteria for design. Furthermore, the availability of subsidies to add solar energy production to the shading has been decisive for choosing that solution. Case 1 has had energy production as an important driver and no architect was involved while in Case 3, being a listed building, aesthetics has been crucial.Case 2 shows a way forward with a good collaboration between the actors and a compromise between shading,energy production and aesthetics which respect the original design.

Early Stage Architectural Design Practice Perspectives on Life Cycle Building Performance Assessment

- Architectural practitioners can avoid negative social and environmental impacts of new construction by making decisions supported by impact quantification during design processes. However, most software tools developed for such quantification see little use in practice, especially in early design stages when decisions have the greatest influence. To identify ways for software developers to overcome this situation, a thorough literature meta-review of previously performed tool reviews was combined with interviews applying a practice lens. The first key finding is that a possible explanation for the low tool uptake in practice could be a missing practice perspective in previous tool development efforts. In a literature meta-review of publications on life cycle building performance tools identifying previously applied perspectives, most previous tool reviews were found to support tool development and selection, while disregarding how tools can be integrated in existing practices and design processes. As a proposed solution, a framework for defining software requirements using a practice perspective was developed. The second key finding is that a practice perspective could be applied during software development by implementing qualitative methodologies. Nine architectural practitioners in Sweden, Norway and France were interviewed using the interview to the double, a projective technique in which the interviewee is asked to describe their next workday in detail so that their tasks can be assumed by an imagined body double. The design activities described by the respondents were sequenced into user narratives which could serve as starting points for participatory software development processes within the architectural practice. The outcomes - a proposed framework for practice-centric software requirements, and a proposed methodology for collecting these requirements using a practice lens - indicate a research direction toward software development efforts which aligns with design process, architectural practice, and tool user needs. In the next stage of the research this direction will be pursued through application of the developed methodologies in participatory development case studies in early-stage architectural design practice.

- The making of artefacts is a core activity in society, the result of which contributes to the building up of our physical surroundings and material culture. Throughout history, craft skills have been highly appreciated and have often been seen as crucial component of a capable human. Despite this, the knowledge base that constitutes the actual making is often overlooked in research. What can we learn about things by learning about their making? How do different craft skills offer an understanding of its historical use? How can theoretical and methodological approaches be developed concerning the actual making? How can we study and understand craft as cultural heritage? This book contains a selecion of papers from the session Crafting Cultural Heritage at the Assosiation of Critical Heritage studies inaugural conference Re/theorising Heritage 2012 in Gothenburg. The contributors are Anneli Palmsköld; Thomas Laurien; Eleonora Lupo and Elena Giunta; Gunnar Almevik and Nicola Donovan. Their common interest are theories and methods of crafting that could benefit heritage studies approach to making.
