- Vid sekelskiftet 1900 sammanföll ett intensifierat intresse för hemmet med en ny syn på konst och vad som skulle räknas dit. Allmogekulturens uttrycksformer togs om hand i ett estetiskt förnyelsearbete där det harmoniska hemmet hade en viktig roll och där ändamålsenliga ting fick en konstnärlig formgivning. I den processen fanns många aktörer. I »hemtrefnadens« tid berättar om den trendledande kulturelitens hem och om filantropiskt sinnade ideologers agitation för vackra och funktionella hem för de stora massorna. Med folkkonst, slöjd och böndernas hem som förebild skulle det goda hemmet skapas. Ett nationalromantiskt hem för fattig och rik. Men boken handlar också om hur den inhemska allmogekulturen, laddad med mytologiskt stoff, togs i anspråk för bygget av den nationella identiteten. Gemenskapen som begreppet nationalitet syftar på är främst ideologisk. Den byggdes med material från det egna landet och sammanfogades till ett nytt kulturellt system. Vilken betydelse hade den gamla folkkonsten i allt det nya och vilka värden tillmätte man den? Vad var myt och vad var verklighet? Boken lyfter fram möbler och miljöer som ofta förbisetts och frågorna som ställs får utförliga och ibland oväntade svar.

Författaren fokuserar på vad som kommuniceras genom hutedansarens specifika visuella uttryck.Lisa Eklöf och Tomas Kubowicz har i sin text undersökt hur kvinnor och män har framställts i skräckfilmaffischer från 1900-talets andra hälft. Olika aspekter som offer- och fårövarroller, blickar, kläder och fårger behandlas.I Jana Brandons och Lena Malmbergs artikel foljer vi processen vid skapandet av ett skivomslag. Artikeln behandlar överväganden och kreativa beslut, exemplevis "Kill your darling"- foreteelsen. Författama har i studien beskrivit hur teorin har inforlivats i ett praktiskt arbete när de tagit fram ettskivomslag.Marina Davidsson och Sara Lagre har i sin artikel undersökt tre bokomslag och diskuterar orsakerna till att en forfattare figurerar med foto på framsidan av sin bok samt hur processen att välja ut ett omslag kan se ut.Anna Wahlberg och Sofia Nygren har i sin artikel jämTört hur olika smink- och hudvårdsföretag utformar förpackningar utifrån vilken målgrupp de riktar sig till. - Contemporary welfare state restructuring in Sweden has led to increased ethnic and residential segregation in larger cities but also to the emergence of urban unrest. Following violent youth rebellions in Swedish suburbs during 2009 a plurality of new dialogue oriented activist groups have emerged among youth, profiled as ‘urban justice movements’. They represent a grassroots mobilization that interconnects spatial with social (in-) justice and addresses issues of segregation, racism and welfare transformation in Swedish cities. The article discusses agency, claims and the meaning of home-making among two generations of activists in multiethnic Swedish suburbia. The authors argue that emergence of new urban justice movements as a public voice expresses politics in making, relating the local with the national and connecting rights to the city with rights to home and belonging.

- In this dissertation, The Public Library and the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm – A Study of Architectural Criticism in the Swedish Press, the textual genre of architectural criticism is discussed from different perspectives. The principal aim is to illuminate, through a close reading of a sample of articles, how professional critics discursively and rhetorically communicate their idea of architecture and architectural quality. My case studies consist of a selection of the critical reception in the press of Stockholm Public Library (Gunnar Asplund 1928 and the competition for an extension 2007-2008) and the Museum of Modern Art (Rafael Moneo 1998). After a briefly sketched history of architectural criticism and a survey of the critique in swedish press I give an account of a method of approaching the critical articles within the framework of a case study concerning textual analysis. My close reading, where both form and contents are in focus, has its starting point in the methods of critique (normative, interpretive and descriptive) and critical elements (description, interpretation, evaluation and contextualization) respectively. In addition I am using a variant of discourse analysis and a simplified form of rhetorical analysis. This eclectic method is above all applied to my empirical material in the vertical analysis, where I am scrutinizing every single article starting from my questions at issue. The horizontal analysis – based on all texts in the case study – consists of an all-embracing, thematic treatment as well as a reflection on the authors’ use of language and rhetoric. My conclusion from the close reading is that the assessments themselves, which primarily touch upon aestethic and spatial qualities, are often expressed implicitly (for example by means of metaphors or rhetorical questions) and normatively (for example by means of comparisons with canonized buildings). My impression is that architectural critique as a phenomenon, is characterized by three different intentions: to assess architectonic quality, state one’s view of architecture/introduce an ideal and to convey experiences and knowledge – which influence different texts in varying degrees. There is a verbal tradition within the field of architecture which offers both a terminology and a way of expression that is unmistakable. I am of the opinion that within the criticism of architecture there exists a kind of meta-critical model where an account of the form, function and origin of the building combined with an established terminology, expressions characteristic of the period associated with current discourses and a rich imagery is typical.

Or maybe Frichot’s book is so thought provoking in the way it unexpectedly awakens the reader’s attention to the richness of theoretical language that exhaustion offers that it speaks to many readers who will feel that they have waited a long time for this book to be written?" This article is Mona Livholts reading of Hélène Frichot's book Creative Ecologies. Theorizing the Practice of Architecture published by Bloomsbury 2019. The article is published in the inaugural issue of Reading Writing Quarterly (December 2019), where Professor Jane Rendell invites two writers to read each other’s work, to explore ways of ‘reading writing’ that practice ‘reviewing’ from a situated perspective and re-write the genre and texture of the ‘critical review essay’.

- Combien perçoivent vraiment les députés français pour leur activité parlementaire ? À cette question en apparence anodine, il est pourtant difficile d’apporter une réponse claire pour la majeure partie du xxe siècle. À partir d’un travail inédit mené dans diverses archives de l’Assemblée nationale, cet article propose une première estimation du revenu que les députés ont pu retirer de leur mandat, du début du xxe siècle à nos jours. Il démontre ainsi la fécondité de ces données pour l’historien, en ce qu’il contribue à répondre à trois interrogations liées : pourquoi est-il si complexe d’accéder à une information normalement publique ? Comment le revenu des parlementaires situe-t-il les élus dans l’échelle des revenus de la population française ? Enfin, que nous disent ces évolutions de l’indemnité (en termes de niveau comme de nature) sur le type d’activité qu’est la députation ? Ce faisant, l’étude éclaire certaines transformations de fond du métier politique.

From vision to reality – integrating energy goals in the development of a new urban district in Sweden

- Urban areas play an important role in attaining the sustainability and energy goals set by municipalities. Despite the often ambitious sustainability visions and goals for new urban areas, there is limited understanding of how these aspirations are integrated into the planning and development process. This paper aims to provide insights into how energy-related visions and goals, in a new district in Sweden, are formulated and further translated into instruments employed by the municipality. Brunnshög, a new sustainability-profiled district in Lund envisioned to become a leading example of sustainable urban development, is used as a case study. The district’s long-term energy goal is to generate more energy than what is used, emphasizing a strong focus on energy efficiency and local renewable energy generation. Key to Brunnshög’s energy strategy is the implementation of the world’s largest low-temperature district heating network supplied with excess heat from two high-tech research facilities. The planning process for Brunnshög began in 2006 and the district is expected to be completed in 2055, accommodating an estimated 40,000 residents and workers.Adopting a municipal planning perspective, this paper combines analysis of planning documents with interviews conducted with developers and the municipality’s project manager for Brunnshög. The results provide an overview of how the energy-related visions and goals for Brunnshög have been included in the planning documents for the district and describe the utilization of three instruments used by the municipality to achieve these visions and goals: (1) collaboration contract with the local energy company, (2) land allocation competitions, and (3) sustainability agreements with the developers.The formulation of visions and goals for Brunnshög, divided into long-term visionary goals and more immediate operational goals, allows for adjustments of specific aspects based on changing circumstances while still maintaining a commitment to broader visions and goals. The translation of energy goals into commitments is an evolving process, with the level of ambition influenced by factors such as the demand for housing and office space, competition among developers, and prevailing sustainability trends. This paper concludes that the integration of sustainability criteria into land allocation competitions is a powerful instrument for driving ambitious building projects. However, in contexts where the municipality lacks ownership of the land or faces subdued market conditions, there is a need for additional tools to be developed. Furthermore, sustainability agreements with developers serve as an important tool to track the sustainability commitments made in land allocation competitions. However, implementing a more systematic review and evaluation of these agreements, including long-term assessments, is necessary to learn from the experiences and hold the actors accountable. The findings of this study contribute to a better understanding of how energy goals can be sustained throughout lengthy urban development processes. Insights gained from development processes such as Brunnshög are essential for implementing the necessary changes to decrease the climate impact of new urban development projects and to mainstream the practices of sustainable urban development.

Multiple factors shape the interaction of people with urban greenspace : Sweden as a case study

- This study identifies and analyses multiple factors that impact people's interactions with urban greenspace in Sweden. An unrestricted, self-selected online survey was used to collect the data. The survey questions were related to individual characteristics of respondents, including socio-demographic characteristics, self-reported nature connectedness, and self-reported constraints to greenspace usage; perceived characteristics of urban greenspace, including its availability, quality, and accessibility, and benefits and problems; and preferences of respondents regarding types of urban greenspace and activities. Additionally, several spatially explicit variables were included in the analysis. A total of 2806 respondents from 208 (of 290) municipalities completed the survey. Our findings indicate that greenspace users are highly heterogeneous and utilise diverse green spaces along the urban-peri-urban gradient for various benefits. The statistical analyses identified 61 explanatory variables that affect the frequency of interactions with urban greenspace. In addition, we identify key factors that shape critical differences between frequent and infrequent urban users, such as nature connectedness, perceptions of urban greenspace functions, and their perceived accessibility. Our results highlight the complex challenge facing urban planners and managers of green spaces, who have to consider and integrate a vast array of factors influencing the willingness of increasingly diverse urban populations to interact with greenspace.
