- I Human Population tar konstnären med en grupp deltagare på en guidad tur genom stadscentrum. Framför olika byggnader och på gator breder hon ut en stor genomskinlig byggplast på marken.Ett frottage (en gnuggbild) med pastellkrita växer fram och synliggör markens struktur. Samtidigt berättar Torell om tillgänglighet som en mänsklig rättighet. Om rösträtt och inkludering. Om asfalt mot vågiga betongplattor - inte för att de är dekorativa, utan för riktningarna de skapar för den som har nedsatt syn. (Katrin Ingelstedt/Västerås konstmuseum)

- What does it mean to be human in the year 2070? What does it mean today? In Torell’s sound piece, the boundaries between present and future, and between utopia and dystopia, are dissolved. What used to be science fiction has suddenly become everyday reality. Our bodies are enhanced and degraded through genetic engineering, environmental pollutants, conveniences, and steroids. The body of society is fragmented and at the same time interconnected ever more tightly by smartphones, algorithms, viruses, and drones. The work is based at Korsvägen in central Gothenburg, a place where many different perspectives come together. The voice of the narrator moves among different times and viewpoints in order to bring to life a world in transition, where many events remain incomprehensible until, suddenly, they are reality. What are we choosing not to see today that is already shaping life in the future? And what did we refuse to see yesterday that we have to live with today? - What if och scenen Zoom, a 30 min context specific semi-digital performance made for the conversation and video platform Zoom, for and in the interdisciplinary project Categorisation supposting the implemenation of Universal Design in Sweden (Kattu) that I devoloped and worked with during 2020. The project investigated categorisation of disability and gender as patterns of inequality and the basis for discrimenation. I was invited as an artist and an artisitic researcher to in part contribute to the project as a whole but in part also produce an autnomous work, it became a performance as a discussion tool - to be able discussiong future bodies and societys.

- This Tilde publication is the first from the Department of Creative Studies to focus on artistic research by gathering together our past, ongoing as well as future artistic research processes. The intention is to showcase the position we are currently in as a department navigating the field of artistic research. The theme of the publication is processes. The starting point is that we must be patient. We cannot rush such a process. Still, challenges need to be met with actions. In so doing, questions arise. We stumble, we fall, we rise, analyse, and move forward. We believe that we learn through experience, which is not linear. Sometimes, we learn from actions in the past. Other times, we learn in the moment of creating. An artistic action will trigger a reflective reaction. An artistic failure may be a research breakthrough. We believe that the artistic actions, the doing, the process of practising our art is the key parameter for feeding an artistic research process. Namely, the artistic activity must be embraced and the skills and knowledge embodied by the artist seen as a tool in the research activity. There is a long tradition at the Department of Creative Studies of conducting research within educational science in visual art, crafts/sloyd and music. Accordingly, our previous educational research has often included interdisciplinary approaches to our art subjects. In recent years, artistic research has grown in importance at the department. Besides the aim of artistic research to generate new knowledge to an artistic practice, it holds the potential to add new insights to the educational scientific field regarding practical, embodied and tacit knowledge, and new understandings of aesthetic activities and experiences.
