  • Den lilla skalan i den stora – Kaklet i osmanska rum
  • 2022
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Paradoxes of Appearing: Essays on art, architecture and philosophy
  • 2009
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The book contains a collection of essays by scholars and artists from a range of different fields including art, art history, architectural theory and philosophy. The essays are based on papers given at a symposium in Copenhagen in June 2008 and refer to the following considerations: When spectators confront and designers invent works of art and architecture, vital questions regarding their appearance arise. These are not simply questions about what appears, also what does not, i.e. what withdraws when works are experienced and created. How do we cope with this withdrawal, with latencies that escape concretization? What are the productive paradoxes associated hereto and how do they influence the processes of making? Based on multiple discourses on these subjects, contemporary positions in art, architecture and philosophy draw up new challenges, especially with regard to the creative practices. Within and between these positions emerge potentials for modes of thinking and doing with a new sensitivity. With contributions by Michael Asgaard Andersen and Henrik Oxvig, Renaud Barbaras, Andrew Benjamin, Olafur Eliasson, Sanford Kwinter, David Leatherbarrow, Martin Seel, David Summers, and Sven-Olov Wallenstein.

  • Lukas / Markus
  • 2018
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Lukas/Markus is the result of a photographic project spanning over a decade. Located in the Western Cemetery in Gothenburg, architect Sven Brolid's two mirrored chapels Saint Lukas and Saint Markus were designed and built in the 1960:s, the era when Swedish functionalism was at its very peak. A stark silhouette in the otherwise sparsely built-up cemetery, the building does little to blend in with its surroundings. However, there is harmony to be found in the fine tuned correspondence between the materials and in the considered, geometrical features giving the building its characteristic appearance. During a walk through the cemetery, Kalle Sanner discovered the building and immediately felt a connection to it, prompting him to start exploring the site. As time went by, Sanner continued to return to the building with his large format camera and the project grew along with Sanner's interest in the building and its architect. The result is a sensitive portrait of both the building itself and its surroundings, but also of the passing of time as the seasons shift in front of Sanner's lense. Sanner's images are complemented by an essay by social researcher Karl Palmås. The clothbound hardcover is embossed, with partial, transparent foil, echoing the facade of Sven Brolid's building. The book was designed by Lundgren+Lindqvist and is printed in HPT Offset and featuring three different paper stocks. Kalle Sanner (b. 1978) lives and works as a photographer in Gothenburg, Sweden. In addition to self-initiated projects, Sanner works on commissions for cultural institutions, design studios and architectural firms. He is Head of the Photographic Department at Akademi Valand in Gothenburg.

  • Ted Stamm : Woosters
  • 2018
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The first major monograph on American painter Ted Stamm is a comprehensive survey of the entire Wooster series, including an essay by art historian Alex Bacon and an illustrated chronology of the artist’s career. Ted Stamm (1944 – 1984) was one of the most multi-faceted conceptual and dedicated artists working in SoHo in downtown Manhattan in the 1970’s. In his studio Stamm developed and researched focused series of paintings, works on papers and studies titled; Woosters, Dodgers, Zephyr, Concorde, Chance, Cancel, among others. Stamm’s practice extended beyond his studio, to areas including mail art, artists books, photography, site-specific installations and pre-graffiti street works documentation that Stamm titled Designators. Many of Stamm’s inspirations derive from observing everyday objects, experiences and events, such as finding an abstract shape on the street or lines on a baseball field. Stamm’s works are fully abstract, and it is unnecessary for the viewer to know the origins of what he or she is looking at in order to experience them the way the artist intended. Black is a consistent component of Stamm’s work, as it was a color associated with rebellion, rigor and reduction. Stamm created a rich oeuvre in his short lifetime which became influential for artists coming of age in New York over the past thirty years.

  • Bomber, virus, kuriosakabinett: texter om digital epistemologi
  • 2018
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • I boken BOMBER, VIRUS, KURIOSAKABINETT.

  • Surrounded by Images and Meanings : Essays on Media and Cultural Studies
  • 2016
  • Book (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This book consists of seventeen essays which are categorised into four sections: (1) the theoretical standpoint: semiotic and discursive approach, (2) news photography, television, and Internet in particular context, (3) cinema in contexts, and (4) documentary studies. The topics being discussed in all essays are varied, ranging from media in Asia, film and documentary studies, media and social activism, to cinema and psychoanalysis, as well as covering several concepts, such as class, identity, gender relations, textual analysis, text, context, meaning, and discourse. However, there is one central idea that connects all of them, i.e. offering the readers to detailed elaboration and application of concepts and theories in the field of media and cultural studies.

  • Amazonian indigenous cultures in art and anthropological exhibitions
  • 2022
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The book discusses the representation of Amazonian indigenous cultures in temporary exhibitions taking place between the 1980s and 2010 through the analysis of selected case studies of these exhibitions held in major institutions in Europe, South America and the United States, including the British Museum, Musée du Quai Branly, Centre George Pompidou, Museum of Modern Art of New York, São Paulo Biennial and São Paulo Art Museum. Drawing on extensive archival research, the book is richly illustrated and presents a range of exhibition documentation never published before. The book takes as a starting point the theoretical discussions that emerged in the 1980s stimulating the development of notions of ‘decolonising’ or ‘indigenising’ the museum as well as of practices of collaboration between museums and indigenous communities. Forty years on from the outset of these debates, the book proposes a critical inquiry on how these discussions inflected on exhibition practices in the following decades, focusing in particular on how ‘major’ institutions (ethnographic museums, art museums and art biennials) have responded to these debates. The results of the research suggest that practice has fallen behind theory and that most ‘major’ institutions or museums within Europe and the United States are still only marginally engaging with Amazonian indigenous peoples in the organisation of exhibitions. The book advances the concept of ‘minor curating’ as a strategy to potentiate access of indigenous peoples to historical collections held by major institutions and to facilitate the development of cultural projects with these collections and in ways that are culturally, historically and politically effective for themselves. The book has an interdisciplinary reach contributing to the fields of visual anthropology, curatorial studies, museum studies and exhibition history and covering a geographical area that has been overlooked within these fields.
