Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- Jane Fonda’s intergalactic adventure, Barbarella (Dino De Laurentiis Cinematografica, 1968), looms large in popular culture despite its mild reception in 1968. Disguised under its sartorial splendor, the film’s narrative clearly negotiates social anxieties of the late ‘60s. Similarly, the production design of the film incorporates contemporary elements from art, architecture and fashion. Paco Rabanne is frequently credited as the creator of Fonda’s onscreen parade of highly stylized costumes. Yet, the Spanish designer only created one of her eight outfits. The paper addresses this misconception by exploring how the film’s mise-en-scène captured the contemporary design trends beyond Rabanne’s participation, perpetuating Barbarella as a symbol of its own times.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- This article assesses the interconnected nature of Southeast Asia around 1900, the transnational entertainment scene in Southeast Asia, and the role of Singapore as a hub for commerce, shipping, and entertainment. The global and regional development of transportation and communications technology and networks facilitated the movement of people, goods, ideas, and amusement forms. The article is based primarily on archival research from colonial newspapers in the region. It surveys and maps more than one hundred itinerant entertainment companies that travelled throughout Southeast Asia around the turn of the century, thereby creating and visualising a circuit of entertainment.

Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
- For Godard, cinema is montage, and montage is a technique for articulating the past. As Godard claims in his eight-piece video project Histoire(s) du cinéma only montage can produce historical connections because history is always a matter of juxtaposing one thing with another. Even if there are affinities with Godard's concept of history in the idea of the return of the past itself in projection, Matuszewski does not describe cinema as montage. It has been noted how Godard's technique of quotation depends on a Romantic concept of the fragment, where the part entails the work in its totality. These are key observations for reading Godard's work with quotations and excerpts. With this focus on historical ruptures, there is, therefore, a strong element of periodization in Godard's films and writings. Through montage, cinema can approach movements, ideas, and usages without immobilizing them in their established explanations.
