- It is common to map culture onto socially bounded entities such as ethnic groups and nation-states. This conception spills over to migrants and diasporas – the Gurungs have Gurung culture, the Greeks have Greek culture, the Kurdish diaspora has Kurdish culture. This paper looks at exactly the opposite. We will analyze art music as a unified transnational practice that, however, is maintained by a group of people that is fragmented both socially and – except for the common allegiance to their musical art – culturally. They speak different languages, have different religions, belong to different nations. The analysis draws upon two different traditions of transnationalism in art music: Western ”classical music” and Southasian shastriya sangit. Both are constituted within multiple fields interconnected by flows of both people and cultural goods, making up translocal opportunity structures. And moreover, these two cases give historical depth to our understanding of transnational practice: they were, so to say, transnational long before the era of the nation-state.

- The digitization of music has changed how we consume, produce, and distribute music. In this paper, we explore the effects of digitization and streaming on the globalization of popular music. While some argue that digitization has led to more diverse cultural markets, others consider that the increasing accessibility to international music would result in a globalized market where a few artists garner all the attention. We tackle this debate by looking at how cross-country diversity in music charts has evolved over 4 years in 39 countries. We analyze two large-scale datasets from Spotify, the most popular streaming platform at the moment, and iTunes, one of the pioneers in digital music distribution. Our analysis reveals an upward trend in music consumption diversity that started in 2017 and spans across platforms. There are now significantly more songs, artists, and record labels populating the top charts than just a few years ago, making national charts more diverse from a global perspective. Furthermore, this process started at the peaks of countries charts, where diversity increased at a faster pace than at their bases. We characterize these changes as a process of Cultural Divergence, in which countries are increasingly distinct in terms of the music populating their music charts.

- By exploring and comparing the history of the twin enterprises Concerts Norway and Concerts Sweden from the 1960s up till today, Bjurström and Hylland show how efforts to democratise and make high quality music accessible to more people were combined with ideas on the necessity to cultivate them, in line with the tradition of Bildung (cultivation, refinement or liberal education). As cultural policy initiatives the two enterprises are considered as ways of negotiating between aesthetics and politics, which result in valuations and assignments of different values to musical genres. The authors offer a thorough understanding of the factors that contributed to changing these valuations and assignments over time, as well as the overall policy and practices of the two musical cultural policy enterprises.

- Idrott och musik kan förenas som kulturella uttryck, sida vid sida, i lokala, regionala, nationella eller globala kontexter, framsprungna ur behov av att skapa sammanhang mellan uttrycksformer, eller att förmedla känslor, eller att blott berätta om något som ska hända eller har hänt. Idrott och musik förenas också i modern arenasport där musiken har till uppgift att lägga band på åskådarnas otålighet vid avblåsningar, sidbyten, samt före och efter match. I till exempel konståkning är musiken en oskiljbar del av sporten. Tjänstgörande redaktör var spänd på vad den beställda recensionsboken Sporting Sounds skulle bjuda. Det var också den tilltänkte recensenten, idrotts- och kulturstudieforskaren David Cardell. Möjligen blev båda besvikna. Sporting Sounds (Routledge) är en antologi sammanställd av Anthony Bateman och John Bale, och som antologier plägar så spretar också denna i skilda riktningar, utan, menar vår recensent, den nödvändiga, handfasta sammanhållning och vägledning som man nog förväntar sig av dess redaktörer. Cardell har tagit det oväntade steget att i sin recension inkludera hela innehållsförteckningen, i förmodat syfte att visa på de svårigheter som boken erbjuder en recensent. Vi noterar till vår glädje att en av forumets medarbetare, Dan Porsfelt, bidrar med en förkortad version av den text han publicerade i dessa spalter i september 2005. Ytterligare en forumskribent, Henning Eichberg, medverkar med en text. Däremot letar vi förgäves efter en text av Mike Huggins och Keith Gregson, till exempel deras tidigare publicerade ”Northern Songs, Sporting Heroes and Regional Consciousness, c. 1800-c. 1880”.
