  • Transmediation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Intermedial Studies. - New York : Routledge. - 9781032004662 - 9781032004549 - 9781003174288 ; , s. 138-161
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter explores transmediation between qualified media types. It discusses the adaptation of a literary canonical work, Joe Wright’s 2005 novel-to-film adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice a novel that repeatedly has been adapted into new contexts and audiences. The qualified medium of opera implies certain conventions but also certain limitations of space, time and voice. The natural venue for experiencing an opera is the stage. An experienced opera or musical librettist will consider where to put such music highlights when writing the text. Both drama text and opera score are a set of directions fixed in a script but resulting in different kinds of performances. It has been our aim to demonstrate in specific analysis the very abstract idea that all media transformation is interplay or a negotiation between transmediality and medium specificity.

  • Mediating punishment?: Prisoners' songs as relational 'problem-solving' devices
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Law Text Culture. - : University of Wollongong. - 1322-9060. ; 24, s. 138-162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we share some findings from the Distant Voices – Coming Home project. It is a partnership between the Universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and the West of Scotland, and the Glasgow-based arts charity Vox Liminis. Distant Voices aims to explore and practice re/integration after punishment through creative collaborations (primarily songwriting) and action-research. The project is complex and interdisciplinary, blurring boundaries between creative practices, community-building, research, knowledge exchange and public engagement. As such, this article does not present a synthesis of project findings, but instead discusses original music created within the project, proposing that an analysis of the ‘musical event’ (DeNora 2003) of the songwriting can tell us about punishment and re/integration.

  • Re-writing punishment? Songs and narrative problem-solving
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Incarceration. - : Sage Publications. - 2632-6663 .- 2632-6663. ; 2:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyses findings from the Economic and Social Research Council/Arts and Humanities Research Council (ESRC/AHRC)-funded ‘Distant Voices – Coming Home’ project (ES/POO2536/1), which uses creative methods to explore crime, punishment and reintegration. Focusing on songs co-written in Scottish prisons, we argue that the songs serve to complicate and substantiate our grasp of what state punishment does to people, as well as perhaps affording their prison-based co-writers both moments and modalities of resistance to dominant narratives within criminal justice. In doing so, they creatively express and explore affective and perhaps even unconscious aspects of the self. We argue that our work contributes to a more expansive and considered treatment of narrative in criminology; one that admits and engages with a more diverse and creative range of expressions of experience and selfhood, all of them partial and some of them contradictory. By attending to diverse kinds of narratives embodied in these songs, we learn more about what criminalisation, penalisation and incarceration do to people and to their stories.

  • Svängrum : för en kreativ musikpedagogik
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this doctoral dissertation is to investigate what mechanisms produce a creative music education. The method used is based on critical realism where a social science phenomenon consists of empirica!events, operating mechanisms and the structures that produce them. I have ehosen to utilize creativity theory to investigate the different mechanisms that become evident when analyzing the empirical material in relation to problem-solving, flow, as weil as theory of play and games. The empirica1 material consists of group interviews with music teachers colleagues at an upper secondary school, and observations oftwo ensemble classes at two separate upper secondary schools during one term. Mechanisms that are found to produce a creative music pedagogue according to the thesis analysis chapter, are overriding based on authentic problems, intemalization and transformationalleaming, and by uniting intemal and externa!motivation. The survey's structures appear in the thesis introductory chapter. The discussion chapter gives a retroduction of the structures that make a creative music education possible. The structures are the role of the teacher, the role of the students, and the importance of intemalization of the musical tools. The focus is on both traditional roles and structures, and the contributions to the new rules that this thesis has discovered. These new rules, I have termed Svängrum, include two major themes: making something your own, i.e. one's own interpretation of another's work as intemalization, and making your own, i.e. autonomous leaming and your own creation. This results in the school's environment imbues a spirit of day-to-day leaming, where problem-solving activities motivate and make possible creative abilities, based on students' own engagement.
