  • On the semantics and pragmatics of linguistic feedback
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Journal of Semantics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0167-5133 .- 1477-4593. ; 9:1, s. 1-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is an exploration in the semantics and pragmatics of linguistic feedback, i. e. linguistic mechanisms which enable the participants in spoken interaction to exchange information about basic communicative functions, such as contact, perception, understanding, and attitudinal reactions to the communicated content. Special attention is given to the type of reaction conveyed by feedback utterances, the communicative status of the information conveyed (i. e. the level of awareness and intentionality of the communicating sender), and the context sensitivity of feedback expressions. With regard to context sensitivty, which is one of the most characteristic features of feedback expressions, the discussion focuses on the way in which the type of speech act (mood), the factual polarity, and the information status of the preceding utterance influence the interpretation of feedback utterances. The different content dimensions are exemplified by data from recorded dialogues and by data given through linguistic intuition. Finally, two different ways of formalizing the analysis are examined, one using attribute-value matrices and one based on the theory of situation semantics. ©1992 N.I.S. Foundation (1992).

  • Aphasia and text writing
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International journal of language and communication disorders. - New York, NY : John Wiley & Sons. - 1368-2822 .- 1460-6984. ; 45:2, s. 230-243
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background:Good writing skills are needed in almost every aspect of life today, and there is a growing interest in research into acquired writing difficulties. Most of the findings reported so far, however, are based on words produced in isolation. The present study deals with the production of entire texts.Aims:The aim was to characterize written narratives produced by a group of participants with aphasia. Methods & Procedures:Eight persons aged 28–63 years with aphasia took part in the study. They were compared with a reference group consisting of ten participants aged 21–30 years. All participants were asked to write a personal narrative titled ‘I have never been so afraid’ and to perform a picture-based story-generation task called the ‘Frog Story’. The texts were written on a computer.Outcome & Results: The group could be divided into participants with low, moderate, and high general performance, respectively. The texts written by the participants in the group with moderate and high writing performance had comparatively good narrative structure despite indications of difficulties on other linguistic levels. Conclusions & Implications:Aphasia appeared to influence text writing on different linguistic levels. The impact on overall structure and coherence was in line with earlier findings from the analysis of spoken and written discourse and the implication of this is that the written modality should also be included in language rehabilitation.

  • Activity-based communication analysis - focusing on context in communication partner training
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Aphasiology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0268-7038 .- 1464-5041. ; 32:10, s. 1145-1165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: There is an increased awareness of contextual influence on communication involving persons with aphasia (PWA) and there is a need for frameworks addressing how to analyse contextual factors and address them in, for example, communication partner training (CPT). Activity-based communication analysis (ACA) is a theoretically based method providing a vocabulary and a structure for analysing the influence of context in interaction and how it relates to communication. Aims: The purpose of this paper is to present the framework of ACA as a means of stimulating further enrichment of CPT practices. Methods and Procedures: The paper provides a brief background to the ACA approach, including examples, as well as a checklist and a model for analysis and assessment of intervention addressing communication involving PWA. Outcomes and Results: This approach enables an explicit account of different contextual factors and how they relate to communication and may, thus, guide the design of CPT for particular participants and motivate behavioural change. Conclusions: ACA is a framework that addresses the influence of context on communicative interaction and provides a way of including contextual factors in a systematic way when analysing communication involving PWA. In this way, it can contribute to a richer analysis and intervention and is clearly applicable for CPT

  • Features of aphasic gesturing – An exploratory study of features in gestures produced by persons with and without aphasia
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Clinical Linguistics & Phonetics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0269-9206 .- 1464-5076. ; 27:10-11, s. 823-836
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to see how features of gestures produced by persons with aphasia (PWA) are affected and to relate the findings to possible underlying factors. Spontaneous gestures were studied in two contexts: (i) associated with the production of nouns and verbs and (ii) in relation to word finding or production difficulties. The method involved assembling two datasets of co-speech gestures, produced by PWA and by persons without aphasia and to code the gestures for a number of features of expression and content. Features that were affected in the Aphasia dataset were gaze, head movements, hand use and semantic features. The results point to possibly converging explanations, such as generally lower semantic complexity as a direct effect of the aphasia, more cognitive effort and/or a greater dependence on one-hand gestures leading more indirectly to increased gaze aversion, more head shakes and lower complexity in gestures in PWA.
