- Applying the concept of minor literature («littérature mineure»), developed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, this essay focuses Swedish working-class literature as a literary movement positioning itself, and being positioned, in relation to the literary field in general and its normative core (in terms of ‹major literature›) in particular. Through readings of a poem by Leon Larsson, some critical comments by Martin Andersen Nexø, and the pragmatic poetics of Lars Ahlin, it is argued that Swedish working-class literature was initially much established as a minor literature, and that these original minor characteristics in the following decades continued to be essential – positively or negatively – in the discursive construction of the movement. It is finally concluded that a basic feature of working-class literature conceptualised as minor seems to be the emphasis on it as ‹ordinary› communication and utterance, deterritorialisating the aesthetic non-rhetorical stance of romanticism and modernism.

- This article examines Franz Kafkas Der Proceß (1925) in dialogue with Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's as well as Hanna Arendts influential readings of it. Sharing Arendt's view of the telos of Kafka's novels as dependent on the characterization of the protagonists, Deleuze and Guattari's description of the Kafka-text as a machine is put into question. Through close readings of especially the first and final chapter of Der Proceß, exploring Josef K.s personal development in relation to the genre of Bildungsroman and the modernistic motif of 'I versus the Other(s)', the narrative description of K. and his inner process is regarded as a device in the realm of the novel as an utterance. What comes to the fore in such a perspective is Der Proceß as a reader-oriented critique of modern individualism, calling for the importance of reaching out to and caring for others.

- Christer Ekholm’s point of departure in this article is Gert J. J. Biesta’s call for a new pedagogical attitude that takes a stand against the current trend in education. At present, the dominant approach is to make what we do in school into something wholly predictable, measurable, and assessable, which (as Biesta argues) misses important aspects of what education actually is or should be. One such aspect has to do with “subjectification,” that is, events where someone makes an appeal to me, singles me out in my uniqueness, and makes me ethically responsible to the other one before me. What role can literary education play in facilitating such events? What kind of reading strategies should be promoted with the aim of such an ambition? On the basis of a critical analysis of the discursive construction of an opposition between reading as engagement and reading as distance, Ekholm argues that the answer to these questions is to be found in an alternative literature didactics, where the work of fiction is understood not as text, but as utterance; not as something written, but as writing; perhaps even, not in terms of object(ification), but of subject(ification)?
