  • Culture and Health: A Wider Horizon
  • 2015
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • What is Culture and Health? Culture and Health: A Wider Horizon introduces this highly topical field of enquiry from a broad, multidisciplinary perspective. The book addresses fundamental issues including:What do the terms ‘culture’ and ‘health’ actually mean? How has the field emerged in Sweden? How can we research Culture and Health? Can we avoid an instrumentalisation of art – and should we? Culture and Health: A Wider Perspective also provides a detailed introduction to two central, international research directions: ‘arts and health’ and the ‘medical humanities’. As well, the book sketches the diversity of research perspectives in the field at the University of Gothenburg. Culture and Health: A Wider Perspective is at once an accessible and in-depth introduction to the field with many approaches. Directed at researchers, students, policymakers and practitioners, the book is an important resource for future study and practical work.

  • Kultur och hälsa: Ett vidgat perspektiv
  • 2014
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Slavoj Žižek, the Death Drive, and Zombies: A Theological Account
  • 2013
  • In: Modern Theology. - : Wiley. - 0266-7177 .- 1468-0025. ; 29:3, s. 361-380
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this article, I discuss the question of the hybridity of the religious and the secular through the example of the Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek and his psychoanalytically inspired notion of the undead. The undead is Žižek's rendering of the Freudian death drive, and as the undead is instantiated in the popular culture cliché of the zombies, we need to look no further than to George A. Romero's classic zombie movie Night of the Living Dead from 1968. Thus, this article proceeds in three steps: first, I trace the concept of the death drive from Freud to Žižek, supplemented, for their theological importance, by two contemporary philosophers, Jonathan Lear and Eric Santner. Second, I discuss the zombie in contemporary popular culture, with a focus on Romero's movies, and whether such cinematic representations can function as a kind of cultural critique. In conclusion, I return to the question of theology by showing what Žižek means by theology and contrasting as well as comparing his philosophy to Augustine's anthropology. Despite Žižek's atheistic confession and his dismissal of all pre-modern philosophy and theology, I show that Augustine's anthropology is structurally similar to Žižek's, thus suggesting that the relationship is more complex than Žižek allows. Both are united in rejecting any superficial and transparent understanding of self, and become, consequently, an example of the ambiguous relationship between religion and secularity in contemporary times.

  • Culture, Health, and Religion at the Millennium: Sweden Unparadised
  • 2014
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Culture, Health, and Religion at the Millennium presents interpretations of Swedish culture, health, politics, and religion today, as the image of Sweden is being transformed from the well-functioning but existentially bland economic wonder to a more pluralistic, fragmented, and gloomy society. The changing situation of contemporary Sweden means that the time is ripe to make a self-critical appraisal of the state of Sweden today. In six chapters, renowned Swedish scholars from film studies, literary studies, political science, religious studies, and theology give their interpretations of sin, culture, health, politics, and religion in contemporary Sweden, with a particular focus upon its cultural representation in popular media. This book will serve as a background of much of the contemporary boom of Swedish fiction, both in popular literature as well as on the silver screen.

  • Marilynne Robinson and theology
  • 2021
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The essays in this volume explore the intersection between literature, theology and religion in the writings of the awardwinning American novelist and essayist Marilynne Robinson. The first section, On Theology, centres around Robinson’s theology from the perspectives of poetics, science, and history. In the second section, On the Novels, a particular focus is set on Robinson’s three novels Gilead, Home, or Lila and the life and theological concerns of their characters. Common to these essays is the attempt to understand why and how Robinson is one of our age’s most celebrated authors on home and homelessness, on faith and prophetism, on forgiveness, and on hope in the midst of despair.

  • Grace and subjectivity in Marilynne Robinson's Lila
  • 2021
  • In: Marilynne Robinson and theology, ed. Håkan Möller and Ola Sigurdson. - Stockholm : Kung. Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Akademien. - 9789188763259 ; , s. 181-203
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This chapter explores how Marilynne Robinson narrates the unfolding of grace in her novel Lila, what kind of subjectivity her novel portrays, and whether there is a tension , more generally, between the implied understanding of self in her essays and her novel. Primarily it is an inquiry of Lila, as the narrative format of a novel allows a more dynamic understanding of grace and subjectivity to be represented than in the more discursive format of the essay. It calls upon Charles Taylor's and William Desmond's contrast between the 'buffered self' and the 'porous self' in giving an account of the novel's understanding of subjectivity.
