  • Introduction to the DHQ Special Issue: Digital Technology in the Study of the Past
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Digital Humanities Quarterly. - 1938-4122. ; 12:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital technology is transforming the assemblage and dissemination of historical information. Museums, libraries, archives, and universities increasingly modify their digital research infrastructures in order to make data open and available. The imminent assessment and representation of historical data has admittedly challenged the boundaries of historical knowledge and generated new research questions. The process of reconstructing, visualizing and rendering historical data has equally developed together with technology. This is the case in both academic and heritage contexts and in less immediatedly obvious popular uses, such as the increasingly significant presence and use of history within videogames. Regardless of specific context, as this collection of articles shows, the process of digitally capturing and representing historical data is often analogous to and determined by the digital platform used.

  • One, two, three, many! or…? Mapping of the controversy over the Swedish West Coast shrimp
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 22nd International Sustainable Development Research Society Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 'Controversy mapping' can provide insights about issues related to actors, their networking, and governance where the interpretation of science is at stake. In turn, these insights can be useful for advocacy processes and collective problem-solving. In order to illustrate this statement a case study was conducted for the North Sea prawn (Pandalus borealis) in the West Coast of Sweden which was the main subject of a controversy that started in 2014 and ended in October 2015 with a Marine Stewardship Council labeling for the contested prawn. We used a method from the scientific humanities, 'controversy mapping', following the methodology suggested by Venturini (2010) and Latour (2012). The method enabled us to trace statements, literatures, and actors involved in the shrimp controversy. By assembling these elements over time, we were able to describe the process of the controversy and identify the networks that 'wrestled' over the scientific interpretation of the (same) data on shrimp population size along the Swedish West Coast. By using network visualisation and analysis software, the case study shows the extension of the network of actors that were part of the controversy, their roles, influence, perspectives and relationships. The material gathered on the controversy was subsequently analysed from the perspective of the production and consumption system of the shrimp. It shows how advocacy actors build alliances with selected product chain actors in order to gather momentum for change. Based on the findings from this research it is possible to suggest that controversy study can help the product chain actors understand their production and consumption system better and provide a basis for product chain roundtables for conflict resolution and problem solving. • Energy Efficiency in Historic Buildings : Postprints from the Conference : Visby, February 9–11, 2011
  • 2012
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Energy efficiency is an issue that brings the trade-off between aspects of use and preservation to a head. On the one hand, interventions for energy efficiency facilitate long-term use by reducing operating costs; on the other hand, the interventions may have both a physical and a visual impact on the cultural heritage value and the fabric of the building. In order to promote a sustainable use and preservation of historic buildings, The Swedish Energy Agency instituted a National Research Program for Energy Efficiency in HistoricBuildings. The first stage of the program ranfrom 2007 to 2010 with a total budget of around 4 million Euro. Additional funding was provided by the Church of Sweden and the NationalHeritage Board. There were fifteen projects involving some thirty researchers from different Swedish universities and research institutes. To mark the end of the first stage of the national research program the international conference Energy Efficiency in Historic Buildings was held in Visby in February 2011. Most of the projects within the program were presented at the conference and international key-note speakers were invited to each session, giving a total of 24 papers. More than one hundred participants, representing ten countries, participated in the conference.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nordisk Museologi. - : University of Oslo Library. - 1103-8152 .- 2002-0503. ; 31:1, s. 40-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To analyse and discuss the procedures through which a digital copy is brought into being as a representation of the physical original, this study offers an in-depth exploration of a single digitisation effort, that of the Ivar Arosenius Archive. Using Actor-Network Theory as a theoretical framework, this article argues that to digitise is to translate, a work that demands expert knowledge in a series of disciplines such as information science, image processing, archiving and conservation. The translation functions to rephrase the archival material with the purpose of making it mobile and conform to those protocols that define something as being digital, all while enrolling associations which strengthens it as a digital original. However, through this process, the multi-sensory archive is reduced to an ocularcentric archive, potentially losing meaning.

  • The Industrial Ecology of the Göteborg City Region — a first appraisal
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Society for Industrial Ecology 2015.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An infrastructure system – here, the industrial ecology of Gothenburg — is more important for society than we usually credit it for (cf. Technology is society made durable, Latour 1990) and is taken for granted by most inhabitants. Gothenburg is an unusually well-developed and interconnected infrastructure system. The first district heating facility was put in operation in 1952. Soon enough, waste was re-used and recycled into energy, into both electricity and heat. With time, more varied materials and sources became integrated into the system to also produce biogas and compost. The project makes a historiographic description of how the industrial ecology of the Gothenburg city region developed since the Gothenburg technical environmental flow system is unique in size, age, diversity of flows and functions. The study describes environmental flows and their actors in a networked organization. The focus on interconnectivity of the different actors, flows and sectors of Gothenburg requires the combination of several theoretical fields. Such theoretical fields include Networked Learning, which takes a relational stance in which learning takes place both in relation to others, and in relation to learning resources (Dirckinck-Homfeld et al., 2009); STS (Science Technology and Society), which study how technical innovation are affected by social, political and cultural values, and how these innovation affect, in turn, political, social and cultural values; (Joerges & Novotny, 2003); and Urban Metabolism, which uses models to facilitate the description and analysis of the flows of the energy and materials within cities, such as Material Flow Analysis of a city, and provides a metaphorical framework to study the interactions of natural and human systems in specific regions. Preliminary findings will be presented.
