  • Between activity and solidarity : comprehending retirement and extendedworking lives in Swedish rural areas
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Aging Studies. - : Elsevier BV. - 0890-4065 .- 1879-193X. ; 44, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The expected costs of population ageing have generally led to perceived needs to postpone the age of retirement. Drawing on 20 semi-structured interviews, the aim of this paper is to describe the ways that the possibility of an extended working life is comprehended by persons over the age of 60 living in sparsely populated areas in northern Sweden. While defining themselves as active, the interviewees argued strongly in favour of the right to retire. What are often described as opposing retiree subject positions healthy and active vs. vulnerable and dependent were partly transgressed in the interviews. The interviewees performed a solidarity that had the potential of including their future selves as possible objects of solidarity. Another important result was that in comprehending the possibility of an extended working life, morally charged notions of geographic place became central.

  • Gender as headline and subtext   : Problematizing the gender perspective in an occupational health project.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Vulnerable Groups & Inclusion. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2000-8023. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The focus of this article is on how a “gender perspective” becomes lifted to the headlines as a solution to an organizational problem. The purpose of this article is to problematize how a gender perspective was employed in the everyday practices of an occupational health project in a Swedish municipality. The project’s stated aim was to construct and implement a new model for occupational health, targeting the municipality’s employees, and gender equality was seen as one means of reducing sick leave among the staff. Our focus was the participants’ perceptions of their participation and their reflections on the content and practices of the program. The information was gathered from focus-group interviews with participants in a management training program (MTP) and a rehabilitation program (RP) and from documents produced within the project. Drawing from feminist writings on gender subtexts defined as a set of concealed power based processes (re)producing gender distinctions in organizations, we have explored how power structures are created based on socially constructed differences. Our results demonstrate how gender knowledge could reproduce inequality and hierarchical distinctions between people in different positions in working life.

  • A Fantasy of the "Ambitious Young Girl" as Flexible Knowledge-worker Subject
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: NORA. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 20:4, s. 249-265
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the paradoxes of the so-called flexible work environments of late capitalism is that, at the same time as tribute is paid to organizational and work-force flexibility in terms of increased empowerment and freedom for workers to make their own decisions, there is also a strong emphasis on controlling their work. These ways of governing and controlling work have been problematized within critical organizational studies and analysed and conceptualized as audit regimes and audit cultures. Furthermore, feminist research highlights how the hegemonization of flexible work ideologies may result in declining health for employees and increased gender inequalities in the labour market. This article contributes to these critical strands of research by examining some of the gendered aspects of the ideological forces that work to install everyday work practices of "flexible subjects". The analysis is done by studying the means of knowledge-work fantasies, and especially the ideological forces behind the fantasy of the "ambitious young girl".I draw on feminist critiques of neo-liberalism and neo-liberal practices and, more specifically, theories of the professional investment that is supposedly common in neo-liberal discourses. The source material that laid the foundations for this article was gathered from within a more extensive ethnographic study where I followed the relocation of a knowledge-intensive civil service agency from the capital of Sweden to a smaller town northwest of the capital. The analysis shows that, in the process of moving work-place, employees became invested in a fantasy of "ambitious girls", a fantasy that entailed certain expectations of flexible and mouldable civil service workers in neo-liberal times.

  • American Studies in Scandinavia
  • 2012
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thematic issue of American Studies in Scandinavia brings together four articles ghat examine processes of belonging and membership in the Latino/a population, i.e., the population of Latin American descent, living in the United States. From different theoreticqal angles, and with diverse wmpirical foci, the articles attempt to go beyond a traditional emphasis on processes of integration and assimilation by addressing the shifting and often conflicting notions and narratives of cross- and transnational membership that emerge as part of the movement of the Latino/a population into the mainstream of society.

  • ‌‌‌Estimating the recreational value of a forest area using contingent valuation and individual travel cost methods (Case Study: Kahman forest area, Iran)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Central Asian Journal of Environmental Science and Technology Innovation. - : CAS press. - 2717-4034. ; 2:4, s. 164-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to estimate the recreational value of a forest area using contingent valuation and individual travel cost methods. Questionnaires were used for collecting the required data. The logit model was used to investigate the effect of explanatory variables on individuals’ willingness to pay in the contingent valuation method. Furthermore, the values of the parameters in the contingent valuation method were estimated based on the maximum likelihood method. The linear regression model was applied to study the effects of explanatory variables on the number of trips in the individual travel cost method. In addition, the parameters' values in the individual travel cost method were estimated based on the ordinary least squares method. Results of contingent valuation method indicated that the mean value of willingness to pay for recreational value in the study area was 19,983 IRR per visit and the annual recreational value was 1,807,415 IRR/ha. Furthermore, the results of individual travel cost method showed that the consumer surplus was 322,004 IRR per visit and the annual recreational value of 43,200 people who annually visit the area was 104,912,695 IRR/ha. The results of this study can help policymakers to enhance the quality of recreational sites according to the willingness to pay for ecosystem services.
