  • Negotiating 'Culture', Assembling a Past: the Visual, the Non-Visual and the Voice of the Silent Actant
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to describe and analyse the processes surrounding the creation of a scientific visual representation, where, both in the practical creation of this visualisation and in the way it is communicated, those actants which amount to what we call ‘culture’ or cultural value, are enrolled or ignored. Trying to answer if a broader set of non-visual cultural properties can be identified and their influence described, and if history can be visualised without displacing our knowledge of the past in favour of a popular representation thereof, I trace the interaction between client, artist, technology and target audience. Although the audience is not permitted to take part in the meetings and walk the floors of the studios, and thus seem to remain silent, I argue nonetheless that their voices are heard during the assembling of a visual representation. Furthermore, offering the audience a tool is not enough to entice them to form their own ideas and exercise influence: although often presented as a visitor-empowering pedagogic technique which invites different interpretations of the material at display, the interactive technology offered by museums and educators is a tool of conformity which disciplines the audience and must therefore be treated as such. An object is not an entity which can be separated into artefact and context, but a hybrid made up of associations spread over both space and time. To describe this, and capture how visual representations can represent ‘culture’, I have developed an analytical vocabulary where the absolute limitations of an artefact or phenomenon is the point of departure. As the vocabulary of limitations demonstrates, limitations constitute the borders of an expression and permit an explanation of how associated actants are shaped by these borders into what we have come to refer to as ‘culture’.

  • Byggande av lätta trähus i tätbebyggda städer
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Bygg & Teknik. ; 3, s. 24-26

  • Vocal fold collision threshold pressure: An alternative to phonation threshold pressure?
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Logopedics, Phoniatrics, Vocology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1401-5439 .- 1651-2022. ; 34:4, s. 210-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phonation threshold pressure (PTP), frequently used for characterizing vocal fold properties, is often difficult to measure. This investigation analyses the lowest pressure initiating vocal fold collision (CTP). Microphone, electroglottograph (EGG), and oral pressure signals were recorded, before and after vocal warm-up, in 15 amateur singers, repeating the syllable /pa:/ at several fundamental frequencies with gradually decreasing vocal loudness. Subglottal pressure was estimated from oral pressure during the p-occlusion, using the audio and the EGG amplitudes as criteria for PTP and CTP. The coefficient of variation was mostly lower for CTP than for PTP. Both CTP and PTP tended to be higher before than after the warm-up. The results support the conclusion that CTP is a promising parameter in investigations of vocal fold characteristics.

  • Medeltidskyrkan i Uppland : restaurering och rumslig förnyelse under 1900-talet
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this work is to illuminate the history of restoration in 20th century Sweden by studying restorations of medieval Uppland churches, in the hope of highlighting the debate and conflicts surrounding the ideologies forming the framework of church restorations and identifying the crucial considerations. It is an attempt to depicting church restorations with the focus of attention on the function of the church interior, but also on ways of achieving a credible design appropriate to the present. Theological and liturgical issues and their connection with usability constitute an important background. The study takes as its starting point the architect’s mission as the person in charge of the restoration project. The heritage conservation aspects and issues of principle concerning preservation are present as a basic precondition of every restoration assignment. The study demonstrates the complexity of the design of the various church interiors. The 20th century restorations have been concerned with modernisation, with questions of materials and with the character of the church interiors, but they have also hinged on individual architects and their differing attitudes towards preservation and new design, and on the relation between restoration and spatial renewal. This study encompasses the whole of the 20th century, but with special emphasis on the period between about 1920 and 1980. First of all a general count was taken of all major restorations in the province of Uppland. Their time-related character prompted a division of the 20th century into four periods, and one church from each period was chosen for closer study. The four churches chosen were Tensta, Skånela, Knivsta and Orkesta. More examples were then used to illustrate the complexity of the restorations. Studies of the church buildings, in the in-depth studies and in supplementary examples from the province as a whole, were then viewed in relation to overarching issues concerning restoration tradition, values and viewpoints held by the heritage conservation authorities, parochial needs for changes to the church interiors, but also discussions concerning the functional and artistic design of new churches and how those discussions were reflected in the historic churches.

  • X-ray, synchrotron, and neutron diffraction analysis of Roman cavalry parade helmet fragment
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Crystal Research and Technology. - : Wiley. - 0232-1300 .- 1521-4079. ; 45:10, s. 1025-1031
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A partially corroded fragment of the neck guard of a Roman cavalry helmet excavated in the former military camp of Gerulata, a part of the Limes Romanus on the River Danube, was analysed by laboratory X-ray, synchrotron and neutron powder diffraction. The approximate phase composition determined by the neutron diffraction of the bulk, 82% (wt) of the copper alloy phase, 12 % (wt) of cuprite and 6% of nantokite indicate a significant degree of corrosion of the artefact. Elemental EDX analysis of cleaned surface showed that the chemical composition of the original alloy is 78 to 82 % (wt) of Cu and 21.4 to 16.5 % of Zn with minute amounts of Sn, Si and S. High contents of Cu and Zn with the negligible amount of Sn showed that the body of the helmet was made of brass and not of bronze as expected before. The amount of zinc in the copper alloy calculated from the refined lattice parameter agrees fairly well with the value determined by EDX. The most abundant phase in the synchrotron powder diffraction pattern of the corrosion products scrapped from the artefact is cuprite, but presence of atacamite, malachite, brochantite, nantokite, mixed Cu-Zn hydroxyl carbonates and probably also of simonkolleite (Zn5(OH)8Cl2·H2O) have been detected. In contrast, the X-ray pattern taken directly from the surface of the artefact is dominated by atacamite with some traces of malachite and quartz. Because the penetration depth of laboratory X-rays is in order of tens of microns, the phase analysis based only on a diffraction pattern taken from a surface can lead to erroneous conclusions concerning the phase composition of the patina.
