  • A neo-documentalist lens for exploring the premises of disciplinary knowledge making
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings from the annual meeting of the Document Academy. - 2376-8908. ; 3:1, s. 1-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article applies a neo-documentalist approach to explore disciplinary information and knowledge making practices. The aim is to show how conceptions and materialities of what counts as documentation and documents are intertwined with changing and persisting disciplinary and sub-disciplinary practices of producing information and knowledge, of knowing, and informing. A collective, multivocal autoethnographic method is used to obtain vignettes from five areas of activity in or related to the discipline archaeology. The ongoing digitization of archaeology is used as a shared point of departure in the vignettes, explaining how digitization influences documentation and documents in each area of archaeological practice. The vignettes illustrate a multitude of conceptions and materialities of documentation, and reveal frictions in-between, both between and within sub-disciplinary areas. In the light of the exploration of information and knowledge making practices in archaeology, we posit that a neo-documentalist perspective functions as a useful analytical tool for deconstructing canonical and habitual conceptions of documentation in disciplines and practices. The approach is especially powerful in pinpointing and explicating frictions between conceptions of documentation as potential sources of problems in information sharing. Moreover, we discuss the potential of the neo-documentalist approach as a practical tool to plan for and implement change in documents and documentation practices.

  • Homeric Hipsters : Religion and Reception in the Marketing of Greek Male Grooming Products
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Thersites. - 2364-7612. ; 6, s. 351-364
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the use of Ancient Greek imagery in the marketing of male grooming products. Based on a case study of the cosmetics brand HOMMER, the paper analyses how elements such as scent and product ingredients combined with a visual profile and storytelling, provide consumers with elements for an experientially based identity creation. Based on psychological and archaeological theory, the athour argues that the intersection between product, advertising and consumer constitutes a play with identity and the potential for multisensory "time travel." By identifying the elements of a product poster, the visual narrative of a single product, a beard wipe, is shown to contain all the elements of the dominant Modern Greek national narrative and more, tying Greek notions of ancient and modern history to anglo-saxon sailor symbolism and the Neo-hipster phenomenon.

  • Insights from Central Syrian Desert on the migration routes of Homo erectus from Africa to Eurasia during the Paleolithic
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Anthropologica et Praehistoria.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our knowledge regarding the migration of the Homo erectus towards Eurasia and the routes he took through the Middle East during the Paleolithic is limited. The latest surveys and excavations at sites in the central Syrian Desert have revealed important data on these routes. Archaeological labor documented numerous archaeological sites located between the Mount Bishri and the Middle Euphrates Valley, sites that witnessed lithic cultures during the Paleolithic. The remains of Homo erectus are documented in various sites in the region including the El-Kowm area, the Nadaouiyeh and Bir al-Hummal sites. This paper will present evidence in support of the early human existence in Syrian desert and will advance our understanding of the general prehistoric framework of human settlement in central Syria during the Paleolithic. It also aims to correlate it to the chain connected the earlier African specimens of Homo erectus with those in other parts of the Eurasia. The investigated area has provided relevant data on the Euphrates Valley as part of this path. The distribution of four groups of sites confirmed that the banks of the Middle Euphrates, especially the area near the Gorge of Khanuqa, witnessed the early establishment of the first prehistoric communities.

  • Mysteries
  • Ingår i: The Encyclopedia of Ancient History. - 9781405179355 - 9781444338386
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Ancient mystery cults have long been considered as a special type of religious practice within Greco-Roman polytheism, defined by initiation rituals of individual and voluntary participation, the transmission of a secret knowledge and an implacable prohibition of disclosure, high levels of emotional arousal, and the promise of salvific benefits in this life and often also in the next. However, recent research has questioned the universal validity of this definition, pointing out that not all the cults described as mysteries (mystēria, teletē, orgia) in ancient evidence present these characteristics. From this perspective, it is necessary to free ourselves from Christian-centric conceptions of mysteries to grasp the real diversity and significance of these practices within ancient Mediterranean religion.

  • Luni sul Mignone och dess kringland. En diakronisk studie av ett mellanitaliskt landskap och dess arkeologi
  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is an archaeological study of a small region in northern Latium and the diachronical relationship between a nucleated settlement and its rural landscape. The work has a twofold basis: a review of earlier research concerning the settlement Luni sul Mignone in the light of more recent research, and a survey conducted by the present author of the territory of Luni. This survey and its results are the major new scientific contribution on the part of the author. I. An introduction to the background, the issues and the previous research, including neighbouring regions. The characteristics of the landscape and its geology are presented as well as the flora and fauna during various periods. II. The excavations of the early 1960s at Luni sul Mignone, c. 65 km NW of Rome, are discussed in the light of more recent research. This leads, for example, to some new interpretations of the chronology of the three Bronze Age houses in relation to each other. Unpublished finds from the southern house, in addition to the Bronze Age material, suggest a habitation there from the 5th to the beginning of the 3rd century B.C. Excavations by this author close to the fortification walls showed signs of several alterations. However, there was no evidence that the walls belonged to the Etruscan period. They are most likely medieval even if it is possible that parts of them are older. III. The extent of the surrounding territory and the various different types of countryside are defined. Methods and results are discussed. Following this, 81 find spots from the survey are reviewed: some of these were excavated. IV. Various aspects and results from chapters II and III are discussed in a wider perspective. For example, during the Bronze Age, demographic changes are seen both in the territory and the neighbouring areas while Luni itself seems to have had more stable conditions. Judging from architecture and other finds, however, it seems that the settlement intensity increased during the Final Bronze Age and the early Iron Age. The Etruscan rural landscape is discussed. Peripheral chamber tombs are used for indicating farmsteads. These seem to belong primarily to the 6th century B.C. During the 5th and 4th century B.C., the number of presumed farmsteads in the rural landscape decreases. Evidence of settlement on the Luni plateau itself, on the other hand, appears to have increased. During the 2nd century B.C. a “Roman” rural landscape develops while the nucleated settlement seems to diminish. The number of farmsteads was greatest during the last part of the Republic and the beginning of the Empire. A decrease occurs already from the end of the 1st century A.D. If this was due to a decrease in population or a change in ownership patterns is an open question. From the 8th century A.D. a nucleated settlement is once again found on the Luni plateau, defended by fortification walls and two moats. Thus it appears that there was a development towards the medieval incastellamento system with its small, fortified societies. It is probable that the rest of the countryside lay more or less abandoned.
