  • A Baroque Period : Gebel el-Silsila at the End of the 18th Dynasty
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ICE XII : Proceedings of the Twelfth International Congress of Egyptologists, 3rd - 8th November 2019, Cairo - Proceedings of the Twelfth International Congress of Egyptologists, 3rd - 8th November 2019, Cairo. - 1110-2470. - 9782724709537 ; :71, s. 365-372
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The archaeological site of Gebel el-Silsila, between Edfu and Kom Ombo, has preserved the largest ancient Egyptian quarry. Archaeologically known since the beginning of the 19th century and portrayed in the Description de l’Égypte, it was documented by the Egypt Exploration Society and Ricardo Caminos during the 1950s–1980s. However, Caminos’s thorough graphic work remains mainly unpublished, while the archaeological exploration of the site had been left untouched. The existing documentation is scarce and the bibliography hasremained very limited for such a large and important site. The site’s archaeological and historical value has been largely ignored or undervalued, long being considered mainly of interest for quarry scape specialists. These were the main reasons the Gebel el-Silsila Project was launched a decade ago by Lund University under the direction of Dr. Maria Nilsson and John Ward, with the helpof a growing and international team of specialists and students.

  • 18th Dynasty dipinti from Gebel el-Silsila (East Bank)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Ancient Egyptian Architecture. - 2472-999X. ; 5, s. 7-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current paper serves as the primary publication of a group of 30 dipinti (painted epigraphic documents), including 19 hieratic texts and 11 pictorial images or quarry marks. These were found and recorded within a series of quarries located on the east bank of Gebel el-Silsila. Recently excavated archaeological material places the creation of these quarries chronologically within the 18th dynasty. The texts predominantly consist of dates, but also include signatures and titles. Among them is an exceptional four-lined text from early in the reign of Amenhotep IV. This includes a novel graphical element relevant to the chronological development of Ra-Horakhty-Aton representations. Included in the material is a unique representation of the hippopotamus goddess depicted dressed and holding knives. This can be dated to the 33rd regnal year of Amenhotep III.

  • Anguiform graffiti in the Roman quarries at Gebel el Silsila
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intercultural and Interdisciplinary Archaeology. - 1824-1670. ; :2, s. 85-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current issue of Journal of Intercultural and Interdisciplinary Archaeology is mainly dedicated to the various aspects of Renenutet/Isis Thermouthis, but also snake-like deities, their iconography and associated apotropaia. This paper will explore three main topics associated with this topic within the sandstone quarry of Gebel el Silsila: 1) Graeco-Roman anguiform pictorial representations, 2) various deities defined (or associated) with the demotic snake-determinative pA-Si (Shaï/Psais, also known as Agathodaimon), and 3) a unique textual reference to the Greek/Hellenistic goddess (Agatha) Tyche (Fate), who occasionally was regarded an ally of Isis Thermouthis and a Greek female form of the more frequently listed Egyptian Shaï.

  • Animals of Ancient Kheny : The Rupestrian Collection
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Animals in Religion, Economy and Daily Life of Ancient Egypt and beyond. - 9788867192854 ; 4, s. 271-290
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an overview of animals depicted within the Swedish con-cession area of Gebel el-Silsila and Shatt el-Rigal, spanning the Prehistoric to the early Islamic period. It includes commentaries on stylistic, technical and chronological phases of the rock art, and present an overview of distribution patterns as well as a relative taxonomic morphology for the more frequent motifs. Main emphasis will be on the early material as it represents the largest group. The paper presents a relative stylistic timeline, divided into nine phases, based on the morphology and production technique used for the pet-roglyphs. Commentaries on empirical indices and temporal significance should be read as preliminary reflections and in a wider analytical perspective of general trend

  • From Epipalaeolithic petroglyphs to Roman graffiti : Stylistic variability of anthropomorphs at Gebel el Silsila (Upper Egypt)
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: What Ever Happened to the People? Humans and Anthropomorphs in the Rock Art of Northern Africa : international conference (Brussels, 17, 18 & 19 September 2015) - international conference (Brussels, 17, 18 & 19 September 2015). - 9789075652604 ; , s. 445-460
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gebel el Silsila displays an astounding concentration of incised illustrations, of which anthropomorphic figures are frequent motifs. These figures were produced over several millennia: from prehistoric petroglyphs to pictorial graffiti of dynastic periods and throughout into Roman days. Spanning over six millennia visitors to Gebel el Silsila depicted huntsmen, warriors, boatmen, and horsemen, religious adoration scenes, apotropaic daemons, gods and human figures of varying iconographic complexity. These splendid commemorations range from minuscule, delicately carved figures to grand scenes, or rough and elusive hammered depictions. This paper aims to present stylistic, technical and chronological variability of anthropomorphic figures illustrated at Gebel el Silsila, including considerations of spatial distribution, archaeological context, and — if possible — an interpretation of their significance.
