  • Pågående landsbygdsforskning : en översikt
  • 2011

  • "Profitability is sustainability:" framing of forest management practices by the Swedish forest industry
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Forest Research. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0282-7581 .- 1651-1891.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates how the Swedish forest industry, as represented by the three largest Swedish private forest companies (Svenska Cellulosa AB, Stora Enso, and Holmen), through their main public relations (PR) channels frame the current dominant Swedish forestry model and alternative models that are promoted by the European Union (EU). The content analysis of the three companies' trade magazines published between 2019 and 2022 explores the patterns in the PR framing of the forest management models with respect to economic, environmental, and social aspects. The time interval is centered by the July 2021 announcement of the EU's new Forest Strategy for 2030. The magazines' target audience is private forest owners, from whom Svenska Cellulosa AB, Stora Enso, and Holmen buy 40-50% of the timber used in production. The main finding of the study is that these corporations did not present alternative methods as viable options to replace the Swedish forestry model. The magazines, with some individual variations, respond to the alternative methods promoted by the EU and environmental associations by an increased emphasis on the benefits, mainly environmental, of the Swedish forestry model - framing the model as not only the most profitable but also the most ecologically sustainable.

  • Food in Relation to Sustainable Development Expressed in Swedish Syllabuses of Home and Consumer Studies: At Present and Past
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Education for Sustainable Development. - : SAGE Publications. - 0973-4082 .- 0973-4074. ; 10:1, s. 68-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Little is known what the term sustainable development entails in relation to the school subject of home and consumer studies and the subject’s knowledge area of food. The aim is to illustrate how food is expressed in national syllabuses of home and consumer studies at present and in the past, and its operationalization into sustainable development. Using qualitative content analysis, the results show three themes: (a) maintenance of the family and household, (b) maintenance of the earth’s resources and (c) maintenance of the future generations. The first theme is characterized by concrete tangible judgements based on experiences of family members and is predominant in earlier syllabuses. The second and third themes are predominant in later syllabuses and show a movement into complex and abstract contemplations of global ecological, social and economic conditions for the purchase of food. The presentation of food in relation to sustainable development has changed over the years, consequently demonstrating the didactic challenge of home and consumer studies.

  • Home economics teachers’ perceptions of facilitating and inhibiting factors when teaching sustainable food consumption
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : AMER SOC ENGINEERING EDUCATION, 1818 N STREET, NW SUITE 600, WASHINGTON, DC 20036 USA. - 2071-1050. ; 10:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study is to explore experienced home economics (HE) teachers’ perceptions of the influencing factors that condition their teaching opportunities regarding the revised mission to implement sustainable development (SD) in food-related education. Five purposefully selected HE teachers participated in individual, semi-structured, in-depth interviews. The recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using qualitative thematic analysis. The results show a shared view of in the importance of educating the next generation of sustainable food consumers. Teachers returned to specific influencing factors that conditioned their opportunities to implement a perspective of SD in HE food education. This generated four themes: (1) Unscheduled foodwork in preparing sustainable food education, (2) opportunities to link everyday food choices with larger food system issues, (3) access to sustainable supportive food products and materials, and (4) a school environment in support of food-related teaching. The teachers outlined a number of local and national factors perceived to inhibit access to facilitators and expressed a concern for pupils’ opportunities for quality assurance and goal achievement. The suggested influencing factors could serve as propositions for further investigations in the continued work of both resource reinforcements as well as of developing a SD perspective in food-related HE education. © 2018 by the author.

  • Pupils' Participation in and Response to Sustainable Food Education in Swedish Home and Consumer Studies : A Case-Study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0031-3831 .- 1470-1170. ; 63:4, s. 585-604
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to explore conditioning factors influencing learning opportunities in food-related education taught from a perspective of sustainable development. Over the course of the eighth-grade school year, data were derived from field studies of two classes taught in Home and Consumer Studies with an exploratory case-study design. Data were analyzed using thematic and ideal-type analysis, resulting in four ideal-type portrayals: the Convinced, the Easygoing, the Unable, and the Skeptical, which characterize how pupils participate in and respond to sustainable food education in different ways. The characteristics of each of the four ideal types imply contextual frames that condition unequal learning opportunities in sustainable food education. By identifying, scrutinizing, and accommodating to existing conflicts and related structures, educational policy makers and practicing teachers can increase opportunities for pupils to develop informed reasoning, regardless of their ideal type characteristics. © 2018 Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research

  • Values and eco- and fair-trade labelled products
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: British Food Journal. - : Emerald Group Publishing Ltd.. - 0007-070X .- 1758-4108. ; 109:2, s. 169-181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to study whether preference for a product increased, or decreased, as a consequence of information that the product was either eco‐ or fair trade labelled. An additional purpose was to investigate associations between importance attached to values and preference for eco‐ and fair‐trade labelled food products.Design/methodology/approachEffects of information that orange juice was either eco‐ or fair trade labelled were studied in an experimental setting, with a sample of Swedish students. Importance attached to values was measured with the list of values (LOV) scale. Taste preference was the evaluated aspect.FindingsNo significant effects of the experimental manipulation were observed. Attaching greater importance to the value “warm relationships with others” was associated with a more favourable rating of the taste of both eco‐ and fair‐trade labelled juices. The value “security” was positively associated with an increased taste preference for the group exposed to the fair trade, but not the eco, label.Originality/valueThis paper provides knowledge about the characteristics of environmentally and ethically concerned consumers.

  • Deep learning-based robust analysis of laser bio-speckle data for detection of fungal-infected soybean seeds
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - : IEEE. - 2169-3536. ; 11, s. 89331-89348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • T Seed-borne diseases play a crucial role in affecting the overall quality of seeds, efficient disease management, and crop productivity in agriculture. Detection of seed-borne diseases using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) can automate the process at large-scale industrial applications for providinghealthy and high-quality seeds. ML-based methods are accurate for detecting and classifying fungal infectionin seeds; however, their performance degrades in the presence of noise. In this work, we propose a laser biospeckle based DL framework for detection and classification of disease in seeds under varying experimental parameters and noises. We develop a DL-based spatio-temporal analysis technique for bio-speckle data using DL networks, including neural networks (NN), convolutional neural networks (CNN) with long-short-termmemory (LSTM), three-dimensional convolutional neural networks (3D CNN), and convolutional LSTM (ConvLSTM). The robustness of the DL models to noise is a key aspect of this spatio-temporal analysis. In this study, we find that the ConvLSTM model has an accuracy of 97.72% on the test data and is robust to different types of noises with an accuracy of 97.72%, 94.31%, 98.86%, and 96.59% . Furthermore, the robust model (ConvLSTM) is evaluated for variations in experimental data parameters such as frame rate, frame size, and number of frames used. This model is also sensitive towards detecting bio-speckle activity of different order, and it shows average test accuracy of 99% for detecting four different classes.

  • Development of an Animated Video for Pre- and Postoperative Learning for Osteoarthritis Patients
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Education and New Developments 2020. - Lisboa, Portugal. - 9789895481521 ; , s. 428-432

    • Osteoarthritis (OA) is a condition in the joint that is developing for a long time and hit first and mainlyarticular cartilage, and it is a long-term chronic disease characterized by deterioration. In the final stage itis affected all the tissues of the joints such as bones, ligaments, arthritis, joint fluid and muscles, whichresults in bones rubbing together and creating stiffness, pain, and impaired movement. This disease canaffect the joints in the knees, hands, feet, spine and shoulder. OA is the single most common cause ofdisability in older adults worldwide. Patients need to receive detailed information about the disability, learn about their disease, its treatment and how to follow recommendations both before and after thesurgery. As hospital stays are shortening the need of information is increasing, as the patients need toprepare themselves at home before the operation, as well as take care of their rehabilitation when they arecoming home, discharged from hospital. In this paper we present a case study about the development of aweb-based animated video that was developed to support the learning for patients with OA, using adesign science research approach. DSR is an iterative process that include three iterative research cycles. The relevance cycle provided the requirements for the application from the very beginning. The relevancecycle, the rigor cycle and the design cycle were conducted iteratively, and have generated designalternatives that have been evaluated in discussions with OA surgery physicians, as representatives fromthe application domain.
