  • Application of the Kinect sensor for dynamic soil surface characterization
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Precision Agriculture. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1385-2256 .- 1573-1618. ; 16, s. 601-612
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Agricultural soil roughness is pertinent to important agricultural phenomena, such as evaporation, infiltration or compression. Monitoring roughness variations would make possible the improvement of tillage operations. In the present work, implementation of the Microsoft Kinect (TM) RGB-depth camera for dynamic characterization of soil micro-relief is proposed and discussed. The metrological performance and the effect of the operating conditions on three-dimensional reconstruction was analyzed considering both laboratory tests on calibrated reference surfaces and field tests on different agricultural soil surfaces. Data set analysis was made on the basis of surface roughness parameters, as defined by ISO 25178 (2012) series: average roughness, root mean square roughness, skewness and kurtosis. Correlation between different tillage conditions and roughness parameters describing soil morphology was finally discussed.

  • Comparing penetrometer and shear vane measurements with measured and predicted mouldboard plough draught in a range of Swedish soils
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Soil and Tillage Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-1987 .- 1879-3444. ; 111, s. 219-223
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soil strength proved much more sensitive to changes in water content than draught requirement. Consequently, model predictions of specific draught were much higher than measured values in soil with high cohesion values. A possible explanation is that specific draught mainly depends on inter-aggregate strength, while the intra-aggregate strength may be considerably higher. Over all tillage occasions, specific draught was much more strongly correlated to cohesion than to penetration resistance. There was also a clear correlation between draught and soil clay content. Multiple regression including cohesion and soil water content resulted in a much higher coefficient of determination than regression with cohesion only. The results indicate that neither shear vane nor penetrometer measurements are sufficient to predict draught requirement, and it is desirable to develop a simple yet reliable field method that can be used for this purpose. More general estimates of fuel consumption can probably be made based on the soil clay content only. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Effects of compaction during drilling on yield of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.)
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Agronomy. - : Elsevier BV. - 1161-0301 .- 1873-7331. ; 39, s. 44-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Overall, the sugar beet crop was relatively insensitive to different levels of traffic applied at the time of sowing. The results indicate that the risk of yield losses due to compaction caused by normal traffic after autumn ploughing is low. However with ploughless tillage, soil bulk density may be too high for optimal growth regardless of traffic during seedbed preparation. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier B.V.

  • Energy use efficiency in different tillage systems for winter wheat on a clay and silt loam in Sweden
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Agronomy. - : Elsevier BV. - 1161-0301 .- 1873-7331. ; 33, s. 250-256
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The energy efficiency of different implements and tillage systems for winter wheat in Sweden was examined. Mouldboard ploughing was compared with different ploughless tillage systems (chisel plough, disc, disc-press) and direct drilling on a clay and a silt loam soil during three years. Fuel consumption was measured for all tillage operations, including seedbed preparation and sowing. Energy balances were calculated, based on the direct and indirect use of fossil fuels in crop production.Specific draught (draught per cross-sectional area of soil) was highest for the disc-press implement, while mouldboard ploughing gave the lowest specific surface (surface area per kg soil). Total energy requirement for tillage ranged from 0.6 to 2.8 GJ ha(-1) on the clay soil and 0.5 to 1.5 GJ ha(-1) on the silt loam.Yield of winter wheat in the ploughless tillage and mouldboard ploughing systems was similar when oats or barley were grown as preceding crops. Growing winter wheat after winter wheat caused yield losses in treatments with reduced tillage intensity, especially direct drilling.Overall energy use in tillage as a proportion of total energy use for crop production ranged from 5% for direct drilling on the silt loam soil to 25% for mouldboard ploughing on the clay. The energy input in tillage was low compared with the energy in the harvested crop and thus energy efficiency, expressed as energy gain, depended mainly on crop yield and not on tillage intensity. For Swedish conditions, a small increase in energy gain might be expected for ploughless tillage compared with mouldboard ploughing when winter wheat is grown with a good preceding crop, but a lower energy gain when winter wheat is grown after winter wheat.
