Contributing to the “Covid-19 and the Social Sciences” essay series, Oscar Abedi, Maria Eriksson Baaz, David Mwambari, Swati Parashar, Anju Oseema Maria Toppo, and James Vincent outline various paths toward reducing field research’s potential for exploitation, especially that of Global South collaborators. The pandemic has highlighted inequalities and immobility that differently affect facilitating researchers and contracting researchers. In response, the authors identify key issues that institutions, publishers, and individual researchers must reflect on in order to counteract these imbalances—and take advantage of an opportunity to fundamentally transform field research into collaborative knowledge production.

Estimation of the Severeness Rate, Death Rate, Household Attack Rate and the Total Number of COVID-19 Cases Based on 16 115 Polish Surveillance Records

Background: Estimating the actual number of COVID-19 infections is crucial for steering through the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. It is, however, notoriously difficult, as many cases have no or only mild symptoms. Surveillance data for in-household secondary infections offers unbiased samples for COVID-19 prevalence estimation.Methods: We analyse 16 115 Polish surveillance records to obtain key figures of the COVID-19 pandemic. We propose conservative upper and lower bound estimators for the number of SARS-CoV-2 infections. Further, we estimate age-dependent bounds on the severe case rate, death rate, and the in-household attack rate.Results: By maximum likelihood estimates, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Poland as of July 22nd, 2020, is at most around 13 times larger and at least 1.6 times larger than the recorded number. The lower bound on the severeness rate ranges between 0.2% for the 0–39 year-old to 5.7% for older than 80, while the upper bound is between 2.6% and 34.1%. The lower bound on the death rate is between 0.04% for the age group 40–59 to 1.34% for the oldest. Overall, the severeness and death rates grow exponentially with age. The in-household attack ratio is 8.18% for the youngest group and 16.88% for the oldest.Conclusions: The proposed approach derives highly relevant figures on the COVID-19 pandemic from routine surveillance data, under assumption that household members of detected infected are tested and all severe cases are diagnosed.

Can an extended civic orientation course improve newly settled migrants’ health literacy and social capital? : A quasi-experimental study

Structural and contextual factors such as limited work opportunities, restrictive integration policies and discrimination negatively affect the health and well-being of newly settled refugee migrants in receiving high-income countries. Health promotion initiatives aiming to facilitate access to work and integration by enhancing individual-level health resources have been tried out within the Swedish Civic Orientation. However, longitudinal evaluations of these interventions are rare. The aim of the current study was to compare the effectiveness of a regular and an extended civic orientation course with added health communication and examine whether the latter would improve self-rated health and psychological well-being, health literacy, and social capital among newly settled refugee migrants in Sweden. Pre-and post-assessment questionnaires were collected from the intervention group receiving the extended course (n=143) and a control group receiving the regular course (n=173). Linear mixed models and Chi-square analyses showed a significant increase with a small effect size (0.21) in health literacy in the intervention group. However, there were no significant changes in emotional and practical support, general self-rated health, or psychological well-being. The findings indicate that added health communication provided within the Swedish civic orientation can increase health literacy. However, further longitudinal studies are needed to confirm the sustainability of the observed effect and examine whether these short-term improvements in health literacy translate to long-term benefits in other outcomes such as health and integration of newly settled refugee migrants.

Olyckor, riskanalyser och säkerhetsarbete : Några olika perspektiv inom Räddningsverket

SammanfattningSyftet med denna kartläggning har varit att ge en nulägesbild över hur riskanalyser, riskbedömningar och riskvärderingar sker i Räddningsverkets arbete med skydd mot olyckor. Ett syfte har också varit att beskriva de olika strategier för säkerhetsarbete som tillämpas i myndigheten.Kartläggningen har utförts genom gruppintervjuer under perioden oktober 2004 mars 2005 och har följts upp med hjälp av två seminarier i november 2005. Analysgruppen har bestått av medarbetare vid Räddningsverkets sekretariat för forskning och analys.Resultaten visar bland annat att:- verkets arbete utgår från en kompott av olyckor, skador och händelser, var och en med sin egen logik baserad på tradition, lagstiftning och politisk inriktning- arbetet bedrivs utifrån en mångfald av strategier som i många fall inte är produkten av genomtänkta analyser och medvetna val- verkets olika roller behöver närmare analyseras och kopplas till tydligarestrategier och metoder för arbetet med skydd mot olyckor- säkerhetsarbete och riskhantering är inte synonyma begrepp i myndigheten- det saknas myndighetsgemensamma begreppsdefinitioner inom det kartlagdaområdet- det råder en brist i myndigheten på djupare diskussioner och reflektioner kring värdegrunder och principer för riskvärdering.Rapporten behandlar många olika frågor som på olika sätt är relevanta för Räddningsverkets arbete på kort och lång sikt. I rapporten ges ett tiotal förslag till fortsatt arbete. Några förslag är att:- utarbeta en begreppspolicy för myndigheten- utarbeta information till privatpersoner som lagenliga skyldigheter inom det olycksförebyggande området- satsa på kompetensutveckling internt- starta ett utvecklingsarbete inom riskvärdering- utveckla analysförmåga för framtidens olycksrisk- starta en idéverkstad för framtida säkerhetsarbeteKartläggningen ska ligga till grund för fortsatt utvecklingsarbete inom Räddningsverket. Delar av materialet kan också komma att utgöra underlag förutveckling av läromedel för verkets utbildningsverksamhet. Rapporten utgör också en möjlig källa för fortsatt forskning och analys inom området
