  • Microwave-induced hyperthermia and ionizing radiation. Preliminary clinical results
  • 1982
  • Ingår i: Acta Radiologica: Oncology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0349-652X. ; 21:4, s. 241-254
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The combination of microwave-induced (2450 MHz) hyperthermia and ionizing radiation was used in 7 patients with superficial malignant tumours, which were considered refractory to other therapy. A newly developed heating system was used, allowing for a maintained temperature at the master probe of 42.5 degrees C +/- 0.5 degrees C during 45 min, but temperature measurements at multiple sites showed a marked variation. This preliminary series indicates that the combination of hyperthermia and ionizing radiation may be useful, the response rate (complete or partial) being 8 of 8 evaluable lesions. Even previously heavily irradiated sites responded. Technical improvements are highly needed to allow for controlled heating of any tissue volume.

  • Technique for microwave-induced hyperthermia in superficial human tumours
  • 1982
  • Ingår i: Acta Radiologica: Oncology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0349-652X. ; 21:4, s. 235-239
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to induce local hyperthermia in superficial tumours a computer system using a 2,450 MHz microwave generator connected to a circular (diameter 90 mm) direct contact applicator was constructed based on invasive temperature control. Small thermistor probes with a diameter of 0.6 mm are inserted in the tumour and surrounding tissues. Eight thermistors can be used simultaneously and one of them is chosen as the "master'. The automatic control system used a pulsed irradiation technique to avoid the problem with interactions between the metallic wires of the temperature probe and the electromagnetic field. With the system it was possible to control the temperature at the master thermistor within +/- 0.5 degrees C from the preset value.

  • Effects of treatment with nifedipine and metoprolol in essential hypertension.
  • 1982
  • Ingår i: European journal of clinical pharmacology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0031-6970 .- 1432-1041. ; 21:5, s. 389-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a double-blind trial 26 patients with essential hypertension were treated with nifedipine or placebo for 8 weeks, following a 4-week run-in-placebo period in all patients. The daily dosage of nifedipine during this phase was 10 mg 3 times daily. Metoprolol was then added to the therapeutic regimen of both groups for a further 12 weeks. Both nifedipine and metoprolol used as mono-therapy caused statistically significant reductions of arterial pressure. The addition of metoprolol to nifedipine tended to reduce blood pressure further, but blood pressures were not significantly lower than during nifedipine mono-therapy. Side-effects were few and only two patients had to be withdrawn during active therapy, one for headaches during nifedipine therapy, and another for asthma during metoprolol treatment. Combined therapy with a beta-adrenoceptor blocking agent, such as metoprolol, and a calcium antagonist with vasodilation properties, such as nifedipine, offers a theoretically interesting approach in the treatment of hypertension, even though the practical outcome in the present study probably suffered from an inadequate dose of nifedipine during the period of combined therapy.

  • Dietary fibre in type II diabetes
  • 1982
  • Ingår i: Acta medica Scandinavica. Supplementum. - : Wiley. - 0365-463X .- 0001-6101. ; 210:S656, s. 47-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent studies have indicated that diets rich in digestible carbohydrates and dietary fibre might be beneficial in the regulation of type II non insulin dependent diabetes (NIDD). Addition of the gel forming type of dietary fibre such as pectin and guar gum to meals or glucose solutions reduces post-prandial glucose and insulin response. Addition of cereal fibres in the form of bran seems to have long term beneficial effect improving glucose tolerance. Little is known, however, concerning effects of dietary fibre naturally occurring in food on postprandial glucose and hormone response. In the present study we prepared two breakfast meals which were similar regarding digestible carbohydrates but differed in their dietary fibre content. One of the meals, including whole grain bread and whole apples, contained 8.4 g of dietary fibre, and the other one, containing white bread and apple juice, 3.1 g. When given to eight NIDD, the fibre rich breakfast gave significantly lower blood glucose increment during the three hours following ingestion. The results indicate that foods rich in dietary fibre might be useful in the regulation of type II diabetes.

  • 1982
  • Ingår i: Journal of neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry. - 0022-3050. ; 45:1, s. 13-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A staging scheme based on ophthalmoscopic signs of disturbed axoplasmic transport is described. A study employing fundus photographs showed good reproducibility among different observers. Specificity ranged between 88% and 96%, and sensitivity between 93% and 100%.

  • Glucose, insulin and osmolar changes in rats sustaining different haemorrhage volumes.
  • 1982
  • Ingår i: Acta Physiologica Scandinavica. - : Almqvist & Wiksell. - 0001-6772 .- 1365-201X. ; 116:1, s. 31-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plasma glucose, osmolality and insulin have been investigated during hemorrhage in nonstarved rats. The rate of blood loss leading to hemorrhages of 44% and 55% of the estimated original blood volume determined the patterns of response. Substantial hyperglycemic hyperosmolality and insulin values appropriate for the raised levels of glucose were observed in the animals bleeding more rapidly. The slower rate of hemorrhage was associated with only moderate hyperglycemia and hyperosmolality, while the insulin values rose to very high levels, 45 times basal. It is postulated that altered glucose‐insulin metabolism in haemorrhage may have important consequences for fluid homeostasis, and the rate of bleeding is the fundamental factor steering this effect. © 1982 Scandinavian Physiological Society

  • Abdominal trauma in persons older than 60 years
  • 1982
  • Ingår i: Acta Chirurgica Scandinavica. - 0001-5482. ; 148:7, s. 569-573
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abdominal trauma occurring in persons older than 60 years over a 30-year period (1950-79) in a well defined region of Sweden was reviewed. The 177 patients comprised 12.5% of the total with abdominal trauma during that period. Road traffic accidents were the main cause of trauma (48% of cases). The incidence of motor-car accidents rose sharply during the first two decades of the study. Injuries to the liver and bile ducts and multiple intra-abdominal injuries were more common in the elderly than in younger patients, but injury to the abdominal wall was less common. A tendency towards more severe injuries and multiple trauma with extra-abdominal involvement emerged during the study period. The mortality rate was 27.6% in the patients older than 60, but 9.1% in the overall patient series with abdominal trauma. One-third of all the deaths among the older patients were directly due to the abdominal trauma. One consequence of the increasing numbers of old people in the general population is probably that more and more cases of abdominal trauma will be seen in the higher age groups.
