    • Iron deficiency (ID) is a common clinical problem worldwide, affecting primarily females. Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection has been shown to be associated with ID. The objective of this study was to define the prevalence of HP antibodies in female adolescents, and to find out if there was a correlation between HP infection and ID. The secondary aim was to study if regularly performed sporting activity, have any association to HP infection, in itself.

    • INTRODUCTION: Platelet aggregation and secretion can be induced by a large number of endogenous activators, such as collagen, adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and epinephrine. Conversely, the blood vessel endothelium constitutively release platelet inhibitors including nitric oxide (NO) and prostacyclin. NO and prostacyclin are also well-known vasodilators and contribute to alterations in local blood flow and systemic blood pressure.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study we investigated individual variations in platelet reactivity and arterial functions including blood pressure and flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) in 43 young, healthy individuals participating in the Lifestyle, Biomarkers and Atherosclerosis (LBA) study. Platelet aggregation and dense granule secretion were measured simultaneously by light transmission and luminescence. FMD was measured with ultrasound.RESULTS: The platelet function assay showed inter-individual differences in platelet reactivity. Specifically, a sub-group of individuals had platelets with an increased response to low concentrations of ADP and epinephrine, but not collagen. When the NO-donor S-nitroso-N-acetyl-DL-penicillamine (SNAP) was combined with high doses of these platelet activators, the results indicated for sub-groups of NO-sensitive and NO-insensitive platelets. The individuals with NO-sensitive platelets in response to SNAP in combination with collagen had a higher capacity of FMD of the arteria brachialis.CONCLUSIONS: Platelet reactivity towards ADP, epinephrine and NO differs between young, healthy individuals. Some individuals have a more effective response towards NO, both in the aspect of platelet inhibition ex vivo, as well as vasodilation in vivo.

    • The primary aim of the study was to assess inter- and intraindividual variations in haemoglobin and ferritin concentrations in Swedish recruits over five months of basic combat training (BCT). The secondary aim was to find predictors for missing training (a precursor for attrition) and overuse injuries during BCT. Methods: In a cohort design, a total of fifty-eight female and 104 male recruits provided complete data. We assessed ferritin concentrations and haemoglobin concentrations at baseline and after 5 months of BCT and physical work capacity at baseline. Results: During BCT, haemoglobin concentrations increased significantly in both females and males. Ferritin concentrations decreased significantly in both sexes and the prevalence of iron deficiency (i.e., ferritin levels <30 µg/L) increased significantly in females. The physical work capacity at baseline was related to the risk of missing training in fully adjusted models. In gender-adjusted analyses, baseline ferritin was related to the risk of overuse injury, but neither baseline nor change in iron status was related to injuries or risk of missing training when controlling for confounders. Body mass increased significantly in both genders, but we found no correlation between individual change in body mass and change in haemoglobin or ferritin, nor was change in body mass related to the risk of overuse injury or missing training. Conclusion: In the present study, the prevalence of iron deficiency increased over the course of five months, while haemoglobin concentrations increased. As baseline physical work capacity was related to missing training, there are reasons to support preparatory physical training before BCT. These findings may inform future preventive interventions aimed at preventing detrimental effects of ID.
