  • Molecules, semiconductors, light and information: Towards future sensing and computing paradigms
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Coordination Chemistry Reviews. - : Elsevier BV. - 0010-8545. ; 365, s. 23-40
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the last few years we have witnessed a great progress in the research devoted to unconventional computing - an unorthodox approach to information handling. It includes both novel algorithms and computing paradigms as well as completely new elements of circuitry: whole organisms (e.g., Physarum species), DNA, enzymes, various biomolecules, molecular and nanoparticulate materials. One of the biggest challenges in this field is the realisation of in-materio computing - i.e., the utilisation of properties of pristine materials, instead of high-tech structures - for advanced information processing. In this review we present recent achievements in the design of logic devices (binary, ternary and fuzzy) implemented in molecular and nanoscale components, photoelectrochemical chemosensing, photoactive memristive devices and reservoir computing systems. A common denominator for all these devices is the involvement of molecular species, semiconducting nanoparticles and light in information processing. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • A Review of Distributed Access Control for Blockchain Systems towards Securing the Internet of Things
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - 2169-3536 .- 2169-3536. ; 9, s. 5428-5441
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm gets more attention from academia and industry, implementation tools of IoT will be explored more and more. One example is the applicability of blockchain systems to provide security and privacy of IoT networks, which is the topic of this article. Blockchain systems are on the rise, as crypto-currency payment systems (such as Bitcoin, Litecoin, etc.) boomed in the last few years due to their attractive de-centralized and anonymous features. As in every transaction, access of the users to IoT systems needs to be controlled. However, these systems are peer-to-peer systems and do not have centralized control, which means that traditional access control techniques will not be optimal. As a result, distributed access control schemes are needed and this paper aims at providing the state of the art in the literature. Thereby, we introduce and discuss the details and applicability of centralized (rolebased) and distributed (threshold-signature, reputation, trusted-computing, identity, capability, ACL, groupsignature, and hybrid) access control schemes to blockchain systems under the IoT ecosystems. Moreover, permissioned vs. permissionless blockchain systems are also discussed. Finally, challenges and research directions related to the application of all those presented blockchain systems to IoT are discussed.

  • Augmented Reality and Indoor Positioning in Context of Smart Industry: A Review
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Management and Production Engineering Review. - : Polish Academy of Sciences. - 2080-8208 .- 2082-1344. ; 13:4, s. 72-87
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Presently, digitalization is causing continuous transformation of industrial processes. However, it does pose challenges like spatially contextualizing data from industrial processes. There are various methods for calculating and delivering real-time location data. Indoor positioning systems (IPS) are one such method, used to locate objects and people within buildings. They have the potential to improve digital industrial processes, but they are currently under utilized. In addition, augmented reality (AR) is a critical technology in today’s digital industrial transformation. This article aims to investigate the use of IPS and AR in manufacturing, the methodologies and technologies employed, the issues and limitations encountered, and identify future research opportunities. This study concludes that, while there have been many studies on IPS and navigation AR, there has been a dearth of research efforts in combining the two. Furthermore, because controlled environments may not expose users to the practical issues they may face, more research in a real-world manufacturing environment is required to produce more reliable and sustainable results

  • Mycobiome diversity: high-throughput sequencing and identification of fungi.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nature reviews. Microbiology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1740-1534 .- 1740-1526. ; 17, s. 95-109
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fungi are major ecological players in both terrestrial and aquatic environments by cycling organic matter and channelling nutrients across trophic levels. High-throughput sequencing (HTS) studies of fungal communities are redrawing the map of the fungal kingdom by hinting at its enormous - and largely uncharted - taxonomic and functional diversity. However, HTS approaches come with a range of pitfalls and potential biases, cautioning against unwary application and interpretation of HTS technologies and results. In this Review, we provide an overview and practical recommendations for aspects of HTS studies ranging from sampling and laboratory practices to data processing and analysis. We also discuss upcoming trends and techniques in the field and summarize recent and noteworthy results from HTS studies targeting fungal communities and guilds. Our Review highlights the need for reproducibility and public data availability in the study of fungal communities. If the associated challenges and conceptual barriers are overcome, HTS offers immense possibilities in mycology and elsewhere.

  • Parallel Computing of Support Vector Machines : A Survey
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ACM Computing Surveys. - United States : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 0360-0300 .- 1557-7341. ; 51:6, s. 123:1-123:38
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The immense amount of data created by digitalization requires parallel computing for machine-learning methods. While there are many parallel implementations for support vector machines (SVMs), there is no clear suggestion for every application scenario. Many factor—including optimization algorithm, problem size and dimension, kernel function, parallel programming stack, and hardware architecture—impact the efficiency of implementations. It is up to the user to balance trade-offs, particularly between computation time and classification accuracy. In this survey, we review the state-of-the-art implementations of SVMs, their pros and cons, and suggest possible avenues for future research.

  • Collaborative Modeling in Software Engineering
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Software. - 1937-4194 .- 0740-7459. ; 35:6, s. 20-24
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The topic of collaborative modeling has long been relevant in software. Collaborative facilities are part and parcel of modeling tools, and every day hundreds of thousands of developers engage in collaborative modeling of some sort. This theme issue contains four articles spanning a variety of areas in collaborative modeling. The first article offers a somewhat classic approach to handling collaborative-design conflicts. The second one addresses securely sharing only parts of a collaborative model. The third discusses whether distance still matters in collaborative design. The fourth introduces a timely approach to collaborative modeling through chatbots.

  • Clinical Natural Language Processing in languages other than English : opportunities and challenges
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biomedical Semantics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1480. ; 9
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Natural language processing applied to clinical text or aimed at a clinical outcome has been thriving in recent years. This paper offers the first broad overview of clinical Natural Language Processing (NLP) for languages other than English. Recent studies are summarized to offer insights and outline opportunities in this area. Main Body: We envision three groups of intended readers: (1) NLP researchers leveraging experience gained in other languages, (2) NLP researchers faced with establishing clinical text processing in a language other than English, and (3) clinical informatics researchers and practitioners looking for resources in their languages in order to apply NLP techniques and tools to clinical practice and/or investigation. We review work in clinical NLP in languages other than English. We classify these studies into three groups: (i) studies describing the development of new NLP systems or components de novo, (ii) studies describing the adaptation of NLP architectures developed for English to another language, and (iii) studies focusing on a particular clinical application. Conclusion: We show the advantages and drawbacks of each method, and highlight the appropriate application context. Finally, we identify major challenges and opportunities that will affect the impact of NLP on clinical practice and public health studies in a context that encompasses English as well as other languages.

  • Construals of meaning : The role of attention in robotic language production
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Interaction Studies. - : John Benjamins Publishing Company. - 1572-0373. ; 17:1, s. 48-76
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In robotics research with language-based interaction, simplifications are made, such that a given event can be described in a unique manner, where there is a direct mapping between event representations and sentences that can describe these events. However, common experience tells us that the same physical event can be described in multiple ways, depending on the perspective of the speaker. The current research develops methods for representing events from multiple perspectives, and for choosing the perspective that will be used for generating a linguistic construal, based on attentional processes in the system. The multiple perspectives are based on the principle that events can be considered in terms of the force driving the event, and the result obtained from the event, based on the theory of Godenfors. In addition, within these perspectives a further refinement can be made with respect to the agent, object, and recipient perspectives. We develop a system for generating appropriate construals of meaning, and demonstrate how this can be used in a realistic dialogic interaction between a behaving robot and a human interlocutor.
