  • Autentiska och artificiella frågor till svensk text Automatisk frågegenerering jämfört med användares frågor för informationsåtkomst : Authentic and artificial questions to Swedish text Automatically generated questions versus user-generated questions for information access
  • 2015

  • Deep Layered Learning in MIR
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Deep learning has boosted the performance of many music information retrieval (MIR) systems in recent years. Yet, the complex hierarchical arrangement of music makes end-to-end learning hard for some MIR tasks – a very deep and structurally flexible processing chain is necessary to extract high-level features from a spectrogram representation. Mid-level representations such as tones, pitched onsets, chords, and beats are fundamental building blocks of music. This paper discusses how these can be used as intermediate representations in MIR to facilitate deep processing that generalizes well: each music concept is predicted individually in learning modules that are connected through latent representations in a directed acyclic graph. It is suggested that this strategy for inference, defined as deep layered learning (DLL), can help generalization by (1) – enforcing the validity of intermediate representations during processing, and by (2) – letting the inferred representations establish disentangled structures that support high-level invariant processing. A background to DLL and modular music processing is provided, and relevant concepts such as pruning, skip connections, and layered performance supervision are reviewed.

  • Unexpected Problems Associated with the Federated IT Governance Structure in Robotic Process Automation (RPA) Deployment
  • 2019
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We investigate the federated IT governance structure in RPA deployment. Due to the inherent nature of RPA being an exemplary instantiation of lightweight IT, federated governance structure (avoiding fully centralized or fully decentralized modes) is arguably a viable option for governance. However, our case study in Telco with numerous RPA implementations reveals some unexpected problems associated with the federated governance structure. These problems emerge from difficulties in reusing the RPA components and elements across business units as well from difficulties in striking the right balance between centralization and local needs. Our study contributes to the literature on lightweight IT and IT governance by critically assessing the benefits and drawbacks associated with one specific mode (federated) of governing lightweight IT (RPA).

  • Reconciling the What, When and How of Privacy Notifications in mHealth
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The increasing number of mobile health (mhealth) devices deployed worldwide poses challenges to the privacy of their users, especially in terms of transparency. Privacy notifications constitute a conceptual means to facilitate transparency by providing users with situational awareness pertaining to the processing of their personal data. We present the results of two online surveys with cohorts consisting of English-speaking (n = 154) and German-speaking (n = 150) users of mhealth devices, conducted to elicit viable determinants of notification settings. We found quantitative evidence for the usefulness of privacy notifications, and for concordant predictors in terms of when and how users prefer to be notified about what kind of scenario. We conclude by providing tangible design guidelines for usable Transparency-Enhancing Tools (TETs) that harness privacy notifications to facilitate transparency, and that help users make informed decisions and take action in response.

  • Similarity-based Link Prediction from Modular Compression of Network Flows
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Node similarity scores constitute a foundation for machine learning in graphs. Besides clustering, node classification, and anomaly detection, they are a basis for link prediction with critical applications in biological systems, information networks, and recommender systems. Recent works on link prediction use vector space embeddings to calculate node similarities. While these methods can provide good performance in undirected networks, they have several disadvantages: limited interpretability, problem-specific hyperparameter tuning, manual model fitting through dimensionality reduction, and poor performance of symmetric similarities in directed link prediction. To address these issues, we propose MapSim, a novel information-theoretic approach to assess node similarities based on modular compression of network flows. Different from vector space embeddings, MapSim represents nodes in a discrete, non-metric space of communities and yields asymmetric similarities suitable to predict directed and undirected links in an unsupervised fashion. The resulting similarities can be explained based on a network's hierarchical modular organisation, facilitating interpretability. MapSim naturally accounts for Occam's razor, leading to parsimonious representations of clusters at multiple scales. Addressing unsupervised link prediction, we compare MapSim to popular embedding-based algorithms across 47 data sets of networks from a few hundred to hundreds of thousands of nodes and millions of links. Our analysis shows that MapSim's average performance across all networks is more than 7% higher than its closest competitor, outperforming all embedding methods in 14 of the 47 networks, and a more than 33% better worst-case performance. Our method demonstrates the potential of compression-based approaches in graph representation learning, with promising applications in other graph learning tasks.

  • Toxicometabolomics and biotransformation in single zebrafish embryos exposed to carbamazepine
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We report here on the high throughput determination of biotransformation products(bioTPs) and toxicometabolomics in single zebrafish (ZF) embryos exposed to carbamazepine(CBZ). Exposures were carried out in 96-well plates with six CBZ concentrations ranging from 0.5 μg/L to 50 mg/L (n=12 embryos/dose). In the 50 mg/L dose group 33% of the embryos developed edema during the exposure (120hpf) while hatching was significantly delayed in three of the lower dose groups (0.46, 3.85 and the 445 μg/L) compared to the control at 48 hpf. Toxicometabolomic analysis together with random forest modelling revealed a total of 80 significantly affected metabolites (22 identified via targeted lipidomics and 58 via non-target analysis). The wide range of doses tested enabled observation of both monotonic and nonmonotonic dose-responses which fit the known mode of action of CBZ. A novel pathway was also proposed based on changes in PE-Cer (d16:2/24:1; CL 2-3) which could be the result of CBZ induced apoptosis via induction of the enzyme SAMD8. In addition, 2 CBZ bioTPs were identified without additional exposure experiments. Overall this work showcases the potential of toxicometabolomics and bioTP determination in single ZF embryos for improved and comprehensive chemical hazard assessment.

  • To Be, or Not to Be Notified : Eliciting Privacy Notification Preferences for Online mHealth Services
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Millions of people are tracking and quantifying their fitness and health, and entrust online mobile health (mhealth) services with storing and processing their sensitive personal data. Ex post transparency-enhancing tools (TETs) enable users to keep track of how their personal data are processed, and represent important building blocks to understand privacy implications and control one’s online privacy. Particularly, privacy notifications provide users of TETs with the insight necessary to make informed decision about controlling their personal data that they have disclosed previously. To investigate the notification preferences of users of online mhealth services, we conducted an online study. We analysed how notification scenarios can be grouped contextually, and how user preferences with respect to being notified relate to intervenability. Moreover, we examined to what extent ex post notification preferences correlate with privacy personas established in the context of trust in and reliability of online data services. Based on our findings, we discuss the implications for the design of usable ex post TETs.

  • A variant of the multi-agent rendezvous problem
  • 2013
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The classical multi-agent rendezvous problem asks for a deterministic algorithm by which $n$ points scattered in a plane can move about at constant speed and merge at a single point, assuming each point can use only the locations of the others it sees when making decisions and that the visibility graph as a whole is connected. In time complexity analyses of such algorithms, only the number of rounds of computation required are usually considered, not the amount of computation done per round. In this paper, we consider $\Omega(n^2 \log n)$ points distributed independently and uniformly at random in a disc of radius $n$ and, assuming each point can not only see but also, in principle, communicate with others within unit distance, seek a randomised merging algorithm which asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.) runs in time $O(n)$, in other words in time linear in the radius of the disc rather than in the number of points. Under a precise set of assumptions concerning the communication capabilities of neighboring points, we describe an algorithm which a.a.s. runs in time $O(n)$ provided the number of points is $o(n^3)$. Several questions are posed for future work.
