  • Learning to Share: Engineering Adaptive Decision-Support for Online Social Networks
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2017 32ND IEEE/ACM INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON AUTOMATED SOFTWARE ENGINEERING (ASE'17). - 1527-1366. - 9781538626849 ; , s. 280-285
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Some online social networks (OSNs) allow users to define friendship-groups as reusable shortcuts for sharing information with multiple contacts. Posting exclusively to a friendship-group gives some privacy control, while supporting communication with (and within) this group. However, recipients of such posts may want to reuse content for their own social advantage, and can bypass existing controls by copy-pasting into a new post; this cross-posting poses privacy risks. This paper presents a learning to share approach that enables the incorporation of more nuanced privacy controls into OSNs. Specifically, we propose a reusable, adaptive software architecture that uses rigorous runtime analysis to help OSN users to make informed decisions about suitable audiences for their posts. This is achieved by supporting dynamic formation of recipient-groups that benefit social interactions while reducing privacy risks. We exemplify the use of our approach in the context of Facebook.

  • Are chrome extensions compliant with the spirit of least privilege?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Information Security. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1615-5262 .- 1615-5270. ; 21:6, s. 1283-1297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extensions are small applications installed by users and enrich the user experience of browsing the Internet. Browsers expose a set of restricted APIs to extensions. To be used, extensions need to list the permissions associated with these APIs in a mandatory extension file named manifest. In particular, Chrome’s permission ecosystem was designed in the spirit of the least privilege. Yet, this paper demonstrates that 39.8% of the analyzed extensions provided by the official Web Store are compliant with the spirit of least privilege. Also, we develop: (1) a browser extension to make aware regular users of the permissions the extensions they install; (2) a web app where extensions developers can check whether their extensions are compliant with the spirit of the least privileged; and (3) a set of scripts that can be part of the vendors’ acceptance criteria such that when developers upload their extensions to the official repositories, the scripts automatically analyze the extensions and generate a report about the permissions and the usage.

  • Molecules, semiconductors, light and information: Towards future sensing and computing paradigms
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Coordination Chemistry Reviews. - : Elsevier BV. - 0010-8545. ; 365, s. 23-40
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the last few years we have witnessed a great progress in the research devoted to unconventional computing - an unorthodox approach to information handling. It includes both novel algorithms and computing paradigms as well as completely new elements of circuitry: whole organisms (e.g., Physarum species), DNA, enzymes, various biomolecules, molecular and nanoparticulate materials. One of the biggest challenges in this field is the realisation of in-materio computing - i.e., the utilisation of properties of pristine materials, instead of high-tech structures - for advanced information processing. In this review we present recent achievements in the design of logic devices (binary, ternary and fuzzy) implemented in molecular and nanoscale components, photoelectrochemical chemosensing, photoactive memristive devices and reservoir computing systems. A common denominator for all these devices is the involvement of molecular species, semiconducting nanoparticles and light in information processing. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Filter List Generation for Underserved Regions
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: The Web Conference 2020 - Proceedings of the World Wide Web Conference, WWW 2020. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. ; , s. 1682-1692
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Filter lists play a large and growing role in protecting and assisting web users. The vast majority of popular filter lists are crowd-sourced, where a large number of people manually label resources related to undesirable web resources (e.g. ads, trackers, paywall libraries), so that they can be blocked by browsers and extensions. Because only a small percentage of web users participate in the generation of filter lists, a crowd-sourcing strategy works well for blocking either uncommon resources that appear on "popular" websites, or resources that appear on a large number of "unpopular" websites. A crowd-sourcing strategy will perform poorly for parts of the web with small "crowds", such as regions of the web serving languages with (relatively) few speakers. This work addresses this problem through the combination of two novel techniques: (i) deep browser instrumentation that allows for the accurate generation of request chains, in a way that is robust in situations that confuse existing measurement techniques, and (ii) an ad classifier that uniquely combines perceptual and page-context features to remain accurate across multiple languages. We apply our unique two-step filter list generation pipeline to three regions of the web that currently have poorly maintained filter lists: Sri Lanka, Hungary, and Albania. We generate new filter lists that complement existing filter lists. Our complementary lists block an additional 3,349 of ad and ad-related resources (1,771 unique) when applied to 6,475 pages targeting these three regions. We hope that this work can be part of an increased effort at ensuring that the security, privacy, and performance benefits of web resource blocking can be shared with all users, and not only those in dominant linguistic or economic regions.

  • Social-IWSTCNN: A social interaction-weighted spatio- temporal convolutional neural network for pedestrian trajectory prediction in urban traffic scenarios
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium, 11-17 July 2021, Proceedings. - : IEEE. - 9781728153957 ; 2021-July, s. 1515-1522
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pedestrian trajectory prediction in urban scenarios is essential for automated driving. This task is challenging because the behavior of pedestrians is influenced by both their own history paths and the interactions with others. Previous research modeled these interactions with pooling mechanisms or aggregating with hand-crafted attention weights. In this paper, we present the Social Interaction-Weighted Spatio- Temporal Convolutional Neural Network (Social-IWSTCNN), which includes both the spatial and the temporal features. We propose a novel design, namely the Social Interaction Extractor, to learn the spatial and social interaction features of pedestrians. Most previous works used ETH and UCY datasets which include five scenes but do not cover urban traffic scenarios extensively for training and evaluation. In this paper, we use the recently released large-scale Waymo Open Dataset in urban traffic scenarios, which includes 374 urban training scenes and 76 urban testing scenes to analyze the performance of our proposed algorithm in comparison to the state-of-the-art (SOTA) models. The results show that our algorithm outperforms SOTA algorithms such as Social-LSTM, Social-GAN, and Social-STGCNN on both Average Displacement Error (ADE) and Final Displacement Error (FDE). Furthermore, our Social- IWSTCNN is 54.8 times faster in data pre-processing speed, and 4.7 times faster in total test speed than the current best SOTA algorithm Social-STGCNN.

  • Makerspace in school : Considerations from a large-scale national testbed
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Child-Computer Interaction. - : Elsevier. - 2212-8689 .- 2212-8697. ; 16, s. 9-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital fabrication and making has received a growing interest in formal and informal learning environments. However, many of these initiatives often start from a grassroots perspective, with little coordination on a national level. This paper illustrates and discusses a study from an ongoing large-scale national testbed in Sweden named Makerspace in schools (Makerskola). The project embodies a series of considerations that arise when a maker approach is applied to a geographically widespread national education context. The results of this study are based on an analysis of the extensive project documentation and first-hand experiences from initiating and running a large-scale national testbed in Sweden, involving more than 30 formal actors and more than one thousand active partners in a national educational setting. The main contribution of this paper is the identification and discussion of five different considerations that have emerged during the project, and include Procurement practices, The teacher and leader perspective, Informing national policy making, Creating equal opportunities, and Progression in digital fabrication.

  • Generative comics: a character evolution approach for creating fictional comics
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Digital Creativity. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1462-6268 .- 1744-3806. ; 31:4, s. 284-301
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Comics can be a suitable form of representation for generative narrative. This paper provides an argument for this based on an analysis of properties of the comics medium, and describes a tool for character design and comic strip creation that applies interactive evolution methods to characters in a virtual environment. The system is used to interactively create artificial characters with extreme personality traits inspired by well-known comics characters.

  • DeDup.js: Discovering Malicious and Vulnerable Extensions by Detecting Duplication
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: PROCEEDINGS OF THE 8TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INFORMATION SYSTEMS SECURITY AND PRIVACY (ICISSP). - : SCITEPRESS - Science and Technology Publications. - 9789897585531 ; 1, s. 528-535
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Browser extensions are popular web applications that users install in modern browsers to enrich the user experience on the web. It is common for browser extensions to include static resources in the form of HTML, CSS, fonts, images, and JavaScript libraries. Unfortunately, the state of the art is that each extension ships its own version of a given resource. This paper presents DeDup.js, a framework that incorporates similarity analysis for achieving two goals: detecting potentially malicious extensions during the approval process, and given an extension as input, DeDup.js discovers similar extensions. We downloaded three snapshots of the Google Chrome Web Store during one year totaling more than 422k browser extensions and conclude that over 50% of the static resources are shared among the extensions. By implementing an instance of DeDup.js, we detect more than 7k extensions that should not have been published and were later deleted. Also, we discover more than 1k malicious extensions still online that send user's queries to external servers without the user's knowledge. Finally, we show the potential of DeDup.js by analyzing a set extensions part of CacheFlow, a recently discovered attack. We detect 53 malicious extensions of which 36 Google has already taken down and the rest are investigated.

  • Monitoring and Visualization of Crystallization Processes Using Electrical Resistance Tomography: CaCO3 and Sucrose Crystallization Case Studies
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sensors. - : MDPI AG. - 1424-8220. ; 22:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the current research work, electrical resistance tomography (ERT) was employed for monitoring and visualization of crystallization processes. A first-of-its-kind MATLAB-based interactive GUI application "ERT-Vis" is presented. Two case studies involving varied crystallization methods were undertaken. The experiments were designed and performed involving calcium carbonate reactive (precipitative) crystallization for the high conductivity solution-solute media, and the cooling crystallization of sucrose representing the lower conductivity solution-solute combination. The software successfully provided key insights regarding the process in both crystallization systems. It could detect and separate the solid concentration distributions in the low as well as high conductivity solutions using the visual analytics tools provided. The performance and utility of the software were studied using a software evaluation case study involving domain experts. Participant feedback indicated that ERT-Vis software helps by reconstructing images instantaneously, interactively visualizing, and evaluating the output of the crystallization process monitoring data.
