  • Computing at School in Sweden - Experiences from Introducing Computer Science within Existing Subjects
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Informatics in Schools. Curricula, Competences, and Competitions /Lecture Notes in Computer Science and General Issues. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1611-3349 .- 0302-9743. - 9783319253954 - 9783319253961 ; 9378, s. 118-130
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Computing is no longer considered a subject area only relevant for a narrow group of professionals, but rather as a vital part of general education that should be available to all children and youth. Since making changes to national curricula takes time, people are trying to find other ways of introducing children and youth to computing. In Sweden, several current initiatives by researchers and teachers aim at finding ways of working with computing within the current curriculum. In this paper we present case studies based on a selection of these initiatives from four major regions in Sweden and based on these case studies we present our ideas for how to move forward on introducing computational thinking on a larger scale in Swedish education.

  • Introducing Programming and Digital Competence in Swedish K-9 Education
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Informatics in Schools. - Cham : Springer. - 0302-9743 .- 1611-3349. - 9783319714820 - 9783319714837 ; , s. 117-128
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of computer science and IT in Swedish schools has varied throughout the years. In fall 2014, the Swedish government gave the National Agency for Education (Skolverket) the task of preparing a proposal for K–9 education on how to better address the competences required in a digitalized society. In June 2016, Skolverket handed over a proposal introducing digital competence and programming as interdisciplinary traits, also providing explicit formulations in subjects such as mathematics (programming, algorithms and problem-solving), technology (controlling physical artifacts) and social sciences (fostering aware and critical citizens in a digital society). In March 2017, the government approved the new curriculum, which needs to be implemented by fall 2018 at the latest. We present the new K–9 curriculum and put it in a historical context. We also describe and analyze the process of developing the revised curriculum, and discuss some initiatives for how to implement the changes.

  • Vicarious Value Learning and Inference in Human-Human and Human-Robot Interaction
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 8th International Conference on Affective Computing and Intelligent Interaction Workshops and Demos, ACIIW 2019. - 9781728138923 - 9781728138916
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2019 IEEE. Among the biggest challenges for researchers of human-robot interaction is imbuing robots with lifelong learning capacities that allow efficient interactions between humans and robots. In order to address this challenge we are developing computational mechanisms for a humanoid robotic agent utilizing both system 1 and system 2-like cognitive processing capabilities. At the core of this processing is a Social Affective Appraisal model that allows for vicarious value learning and inference. Using a multi-dimensional reinforcement learning approach the robotic agent learns affective value-based functions (system 1). This learning can ground representations of affective relations (predicates) relevant to interacting agents. In this article we discuss the existing theoretical basis for developing our neural network model as a system 1-like process. We also discuss initial ideas for developing system 2-like top-down/generative affective (semantic relation-based) processing. The aim of the symbolic-connectionist architectural development is to promote autonomous capabilities in humanoid robots for interacting efficiently/intelligently (recombinant application of learned associations) with humans in changing and challenging environments.

  • The Art of Gate-Crashing Bringing HRI into users' homes
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Interaction Studies: Social Behaviour and Communication in Biological and Artificial Systems. - : John Benjamins Publishing Company. - 1572-0373 .- 1572-0381. ; 10:3, s. 274-297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Special purpose service robots have already entered the market and their users homes. Also the idea of the general purpose service robot or personal robot companion is increasingly discussed and investigated. To probe human-robot interaction with a mobile robot in arbitrary domestic settings, we conducted a study in eight different homes. Based on previous results from laboratory studies we identified particular interaction situations which should be studied thoroughly in real home settings. Based upon the collected sensory data from the robot we found that the different environments influenced the spatial management observable during our subjects' interaction with the robot. We also validated empirically that the concept of spatial prompting can aid spatial management and communication, and assume this concept to be helpful for Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) design. In this article we report on our exploratory field study and our findings regarding, in particular, the spatial management observed during show episodes and movement through narrow passages.

  • Evaluating a Dynamic Keep-Alive Messaging Strategy for Mobile Pervasive Systems
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Procedia Computer Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 1877-0509. ; 109, s. 319-326
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Timely loss-of-contact detection between devices in pervasive systems using mobile networks is an important aspect for both functionality and user experience. Traditional schemes where time-to-live is defined by the service provider are not adequate in mobile networks where communication failures are frequent. On the other hand, schemes using keep-alive messaging tend to increase the communication overhead, in particular if the time to detect a loss of contact needs to be short. We introduce a strategy where the time between keep-alive messages is adjusted dynamically according to the need in a particular application. Our solution was evaluated with usage data from a professional application built on the PalCom framework. The measurements show a 96 % decrease of the communication overhead while still maintaining the same system responsiveness.

  • Yggdrasil: Privacy-Aware Dual Deduplication in Multi Client Settings
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ICC 2021 - IEEE International Conference on Communications. - 9781728171227 - 9781728171234 ; , s. 1-1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes Yggdrasil, a protocol for privacy-aware dual data deduplication in multi-client settings. Yggdrasil is designed to reduce cloud storage space while safeguarding the privacy of clients’ data. This is achieved by exploiting a ‘dual’ setting, where both the cloud and the clients store a fraction of the data. Yggdrasil combines two innovative techniques to achieve this goal. First, generalized deduplication, an emerging solution to reduce data footprint; second, non- deterministic lightweight transformations that ensure a high level of privacy while improving the degree of cross-user data compression in the cloud. Our client preprocessing guarantees that an honest-but-curious cloud storage provider faces a high degree of uncertainty in determining the original clients’ data. We introduce an uncertainty metric to measure the privacy of the client’s outsourced data and three compression metrics to investigate the performance of Yggdrasil. Our experiments with a dataset of DVI files show that Yggdrasil achieves an overall compression rate of 43%, which means that Yggdrasil can represent the same database using less than half of the original space. Moreover, for the same experiment clients only store 17% of the original data, the cloud hosts the remaining 26%, and the client preprocessing ensures each outsourced fragment has 10 293 possible original strings. Higher uncertainty is possible, but reduces the cloud’s compression capability.

  • Visual Stereotypes and Virtual Pedagogical Agents
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Educational Technology & Society. - Palmerston North : International Forum of Educational Technology & Society. - 1176-3647 .- 1436-4522. ; 11:4, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper deals with the use of visual stereotypes in virtual pedagogical agents and its potential impact in digital learning environments. An analysis of the concept of visual stereotypes is followed by a discussion of affordances and drawbacks as to their use in the context of traditional media. Next, the paper explores whether virtual pedagogical characters introduce anything novel with regard to the use of visual stereotypes - as compared both to real life interaction between humans and to the use of visual stereotypes in traditional non-interactive media such as magazines, film, television and video. It is proposed that novel affordances, as well as novel drawbacks, indeed are being introduced with the use of visual stereotypes in virtual characters. The conclusion of the paper is that knowledge on these matters can be useful both for developers of educational systems and for educators in enabling them to strengthen some pedagogical settings and activities.

  • Using circumventing media to counteract authoritarian regimes
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IADIS International Conference ICT, Society and Human Beings 2011. - Rome, Italy : IADIS Press. - 9789728939366 ; , s. 251-254
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to reflect on how potential circumventing media and communication technologies could potentially assist the information flow when authoritarian regimes decide to block the main channels, such as the Internet and the mobile phone networks. The point of departure is the recent Internet blackouts in countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), such as Egypt, Bahrain and Libya. We discuss several applications that were developed as a response to state repression in these countries, and their future potential that would allow people to communicate more freely despite Internet and mobile network blackouts.

  • DP-ACT: Decentralized Privacy-Preserving Asymmetric Digital Contact Tracing
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The 24th Privacy Enhancing Technologies Symposium (PETS).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital contact tracing substantially improves the identification of high-risk contacts during pandemics. Despite several attempts to encourage people to use digital contact-tracing applications by developing and rolling out decentralized privacy-preserving protocols (broadcasting pseudo-random IDs over Bluetooth Low Energy-BLE), the adoption of digital contact tracing mobile applications has been limited, with privacy being one of the main concerns. In this paper, we propose a decentralized privacy-preserving contact tracing protocol, called DP-ACT, with both active and passive participants. Active participants broadcast BLE beacons with pseudo-random IDs, while passive participants model conservative users who do not broadcast BLE beacons but still listen to the broadcasted BLE beacons. We analyze the proposed protocol and discuss a set of interesting properties. The proposed protocol is evaluated using both a face-to-face individual interaction dataset and five real-world BLE datasets. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed DP-ACT protocol outperforms the state-of-the-art protocols in the presence of passive users.
