  • A Secure Network Model against Bot Attacks in Edge-enabled Industrial Internet of Things
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1551-3203 .- 1941-0050. ; 18:11, s. 7998-8006
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The new Industry 4.0 standard has offered many advantages to the industries improving their production rate since it evaluates novel cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cyber-Physical Systems, and Internet of Things to automate manufacturing processes so as to minimize time and economical costs while improving the quality of products. However, this rapid industrial transition carries risks in terms of security and privacy issues that arise. In this paper, we propose a novel secure network model to enhance network security and employees privacy in the Edge-enabled Industrial Internet of Things. Experimental results demonstrate encouraging performance rates in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, fall-out, F-measure, and Matthews correlation coefficient against known and unknown bot attacks.

  • A Slip of the Machinic Tongue
  • 2022
  • Konstnärligt arbete (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The title of the book, The Computer as Seen at the End of the Human Age, is a reference to the exhibition “The Machine as Seen at the End of the Mechanical Age”, curated by Pontus Hultén for MoMA in 1968, highlighting how technology was influencing art at a time when mechanical machines were increasingly replaced by electronic and chemical devices. Through its selection of contemporary art works the exhibition thus came to function as a recording of technological history.I never got to see the exhibition since I wasn’t born at the time, but a couple of years ago I came across a curious book with a tin cover. The book was published in connection to the exhibition, and the history recorded between its covers ends at approximately the same time that early computers start to make their way into the art world. In the fifty years that followed, art came to be marked by a digital presence.  It was that book, along with an interest in dead media, and a curiosity for art aided by algorithms, that sparked the idea for The Computer as Seen at the End of the Human Age.Here you will encounter new works by a selection of artists, specifically invited to use algorithms/AI to contribute to a continuous, self-reproducing, anachronistic, machine aided recording of history. A way to preserve, revise and/or comment upon digital history from the vantage point of present-day technology or through the lens of imagined future media, perspectives and technologies. The works have been created specifically for the book. Some are based on works by other artists, made in another era, repurposed for our time and technologies. Others are based on redundant technologies, revived and given new functions. Some adopt a critical or political approach to the algorithm and its impact on society. Several utilize it as an opportunity to create unique works for each separate copy of the edition. Thousands of files eventually compiled into 200 unique books, each with a different cover and different contents – generated, aided or influenced by algorithms. Participating artists: Geraldine Juárez, Cornelia Sollfrank/Winnie Soon, Mishka Henner, Shane Hope, !Mediengruppe Bitnik, Rosa Menkman, Rosemary Lee, Olle Essvik, Evan Roth, Jonas Lund, Darsha Hewitt, Carl-Johan Rosén, Linda Hilfling Ritasdatter and Jacek Smolicki.Editor: Olle Essvik

  • Introducing Programming and Digital Competence in Swedish K-9 Education
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Informatics in Schools. - Cham : Springer. - 0302-9743 .- 1611-3349. - 9783319714820 - 9783319714837 ; , s. 117-128
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of computer science and IT in Swedish schools has varied throughout the years. In fall 2014, the Swedish government gave the National Agency for Education (Skolverket) the task of preparing a proposal for K–9 education on how to better address the competences required in a digitalized society. In June 2016, Skolverket handed over a proposal introducing digital competence and programming as interdisciplinary traits, also providing explicit formulations in subjects such as mathematics (programming, algorithms and problem-solving), technology (controlling physical artifacts) and social sciences (fostering aware and critical citizens in a digital society). In March 2017, the government approved the new curriculum, which needs to be implemented by fall 2018 at the latest. We present the new K–9 curriculum and put it in a historical context. We also describe and analyze the process of developing the revised curriculum, and discuss some initiatives for how to implement the changes.

  • A blockchain-based multi-factor authentication model for a cloud-enabled internet of vehicles
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sensors. - : MDPI. - 1424-8220. ; 21:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Continuous and emerging advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have enabled Internet-of-Things (IoT)-to-Cloud applications to be induced by data pipelines and Edge Intelligence-based architectures. Advanced vehicular networks greatly benefit from these architectures due to the implicit functionalities that are focused on realizing the Internet of Vehicle (IoV) vision. However, IoV is susceptible to attacks, where adversaries can easily exploit existing vulnerabilities. Several attacks may succeed due to inadequate or ineffective authentication techniques. Hence, there is a timely need for hardening the authentication process through cutting-edge access control mechanisms. This paper proposes a Blockchain-based Multi-Factor authentication model that uses an embedded Digital Signature (MFBC_eDS) for vehicular clouds and Cloud-enabled IoV. Our proposed MFBC_eDS model consists of a scheme that integrates the Security Assertion Mark-up Language (SAML) to the Single Sign-On (SSO) capabilities for a connected edge to cloud ecosystem. MFBC_eDS draws an essential comparison with the baseline authentication scheme suggested by Karla and Sood. Based on the foundations of Karla and Sood’s scheme, an embedded Probabilistic Polynomial-Time Algorithm (ePPTA) and an additional Hash function for the Pi generated during Karla and Sood’s authentication were proposed and discussed. The preliminary analysis of the proposition shows that the approach is more suitable to counter major adversarial attacks in an IoV-centered environment based on the Dolev–Yao adversarial model while satisfying aspects of the Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability (CIA) triad. © 2021 by the authors. • Toward the Internet of Medical Things : Architecture, trends and challenges
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Mathematical Biosciences and Engineering. - : American Institute of Mathematical Sciences. - 1547-1063 .- 1551-0018. ; 21:1, s. 650-678
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, the growing pervasiveness of wearable technology has created new opportunities for medical and emergency rescue operations to protect users' health and safety, such as cost-effective medical solutions, more convenient healthcare and quick hospital treatments, which make it easier for the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) to evolve. The study first presents an overview of the IoMT before introducing the IoMT architecture. Later, it portrays an overview of the core technologies of the IoMT, including cloud computing, big data and artificial intelligence, and it elucidates their utilization within the healthcare system. Further, several emerging challenges, such as cost-effectiveness, security, privacy, accuracy and power consumption, are discussed, and potential solutions for these challenges are also suggested.

  • Empathic Robotic Tutors for Personalised Learning: A Multidisciplinary Approach
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Social Robotics: Proceedings of the 7th International Conference, ICSR 2015, Paris, France, October 26-30, 2015. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. ; , s. 285-295, s. 285-295
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Within any learning process, the formation of a socio-emotional relationship between learner and teacher is paramount to facilitating a good learning experience. The ability to form this relationship may come naturally to an attentive teacher; but how do we endow an unemotional robot with this ability? In this paper, we extend upon insights from the literature to include tools from user-centered design (UCD) and analyses of human-human interaction (HHI) as the basis of a multidisciplinary approach in the development of an empathic robotic tutor. We discuss the lessons learned in respect to design principles with the aim of personalised learning with empathic robotic tutors.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes the development of a fetch-and-carry robot to assist physically impaired people in an office environment. Different methods involving users are employed in the project, including the task analysis, Hi-Fi simulation trials and focus group sessions. Through an iterative design process, a prototype robot system has been developed, with an enhanced robot platform including a graphical user interface and natural language interface. The users' need for continuous feedback from the robot has led to the development of an animated character (CERO), which relates the two interface components and indicates the robot's current state by using simple gestures

  • Moving Towards a Journal-centric Publication Model for CHI : Possible Paths, Opportunities and Risks
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: CHI EA '19 EXTENDED ABSTRACTS. - New York, NY, USA : ASSOC COMPUTING MACHINERY. - 9781450359719
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a scholarly field, the ACM SIGCHI community maintains a strong focus on conferences as its main outlet for scholarly publication. Historically, this originates in how the field of computer science adopted a conference-centric publication model as well as in the organizational focus of ACM. Lately, this model has become increasingly challenged for a number of reasons, and multiple alternatives are emerging within the SIGCHI community as well as in adjacent communities. Through revisiting examples from other conferences and neighboring communities, this panel explores alternative publication paths and their opportunities and risks.

  • Sustainability and Usability Evaluation of E-Commerce Portals
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Good Practices and New Perspectives in Information Systems and Technologies, Vol 1, WorldCIST 2024. - : Springer. - 9783031602146 - 9783031602153 ; , s. 204-213
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information and communications technologies (ICT) are essential to achieving energy sustainability objectives. With their substantial daily traffic, e-commerce websites are especially important. This study looked into the connection between the most popular e-commerce websites' sustainability and usability. This study evaluated usability employing accepted web-based user experience criteria. Furthermore, a framework for assessing website elements that support sustainability was put forth. Through an analysis of the features of four tools that quantify sustainability-related factors such as page load time, browser cache usage, JavaScript usage, HTTP request volume, and usage of green servers we gathered a total of 39 sustainability criteria for software. Finally, we evaluated whether usability and sustainability were correlated. There was no significant correlation between usability and sustainability according to our research. Still, the framework this paper develops is a useful tool for sustainability evaluations.

  • Direct Transmittance Estimation in Heterogeneous Participating Media Using Approximated Taylor Expansions
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1077-2626 .- 1941-0506. ; 28:7, s. 2602-2614
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Evaluating the transmittance between two points along a ray is a key component in solving the light transport through heterogeneous participating media and entails computing an intractable exponential of the integrated medium's extinction coefficient. While algorithms for estimating this transmittance exist, there is a lack of theoretical knowledge about their behaviour, which also prevent new theoretically sound algorithms from being developed. For this purpose, we introduce a new class of unbiased transmittance estimators based on random sampling or truncation of a Taylor expansion of the exponential function. In contrast to classical tracking algorithms, these estimators are non-analogous to the physical light transport process and directly sample the underlying extinction function without performing incremental advancement. We present several versions of the new class of estimators, based on either importance sampling or Russian roulette to provide finite unbiased estimators of the infinite Taylor series expansion. We also show that the well known ratio tracking algorithm can be seen as a special case of the new class of estimators. Lastly, we conduct performance evaluations on both the central processing unit (CPU) and the graphics processing unit (GPU), and the results demonstrate that the new algorithms outperform traditional algorithms for heterogeneous mediums.
