  • Proceedings of the 21st Student Conference in Interaction Technology and Design
  • 2021
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Student Conference in Interaction Technology and Design is the annual grand finale of the course Current Topic in Interaction Technology and Design at the Department of Applied Physics and Electronics, Umeå University, Sweden. The main objective of the course is to give the participants a forum, where they can actively discuss scientific research and development through the implementation of their own ideas and interests. The course introduces students to independently finding and researching a topic of interest for them, finding related sources of information and related research publications, writing a scientific article, peer-reviewing, and presenting their work at a conference. The course is conducted in English which is a foreign language for most of the students. The final examination format is chosen as a conference to provide a realistic environment for the presentation of the results. The work of each student has been reviewed by other participants on the course and members of the department acting not only as teachers and consultants but also as program committee members. If the reviews are favorable, the paper is accepted as a full paper at the conference and included in the proceedings.

  • Comparing millennials view on minimalism and maximalism in web design
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 31st European Conference on Cognitive Ergonomics. - New York, NY : ACM Press. - 9781450371667 ; , s. 92-95
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study evaluates how Generation Y, also known as millennials, perceive different web design approaches. Two web design approaches were compared, using methods in User Experience design. The first approach is minimalism and the second one is maximalism. Minimalism has been a recurring web design trend ever since the end of the twentieth century. Maximalism is claimed to be the most important web design trend of 2018. The interesting question is if millennials who have grown up with minimalism in web design are interested in a new approach – the maximal approach. This study probe the opinions, thoughts and emotions of millennials after they have browsed two websites, one developed with minimalism and one developed with maximalism. The results show that the participants in this study were more exited by the maximal design. However, combining quantitative and qualitative data, the conclusion is that the different design approaches are more or less suitable to use depending on the message that the website is supposed to convey.

  • Evaluating electronic ink display technology for use in drawing and note taking
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ECCE 2019. - New York, NY : ACM Press. - 9781450371667 ; , s. 108-113
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, electronic paper – a display technology known for its low power consumption and paper-like appearance has started emerging in several consumer products, replacing reading and writing on regular paper to some extent. In this paper, the capabilities of electronic ink technology is evaluated in the context of drawing and note taking. Our tests were done by letting test participants use two different tablet devices as replacements for daily activities that usually require pen and paper; the reMarkable, using an electronic ink display, and the Apple iPad, using an LCD screen. The results from the tests showed that for writing, the reMarkable was superior to the iPad, although insufficient when it comes to software and user experience. This shows that the nature of tasks performed throughout a day benefits from a less niched, more do-all device such as an iPad. In summary, the results from this evaluation shows that while the technology has come a long way mimicking the look and feel of paper, integrating electronic paper technology into a tablet in this case demands a little too much of the technology itself. Ultimately, electronic paper still has some way to go before being the go to paper replacement that has been long sought after.

  • The media consumers’ conscious and unconscious choices : a key to understanding the news media consumption of tomorrow
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Colloque International Communication Électronique Cultures et Identités, 11, 12 & 13 juin 2014. - : The IUT of Le Havre : Information-Communication Department CIRTAI IDEES (UMR6228). ; , s. 1-8, s. 521-528
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The digital society of today is dramatically different than that of a decade ago. During the past decades computers have gone from being clearly visible and at the center of attention to becoming an integrated and omnipresent part of our everyday lives. Today, individuals are catching up on a reality where homes, workplaces and society to a large extent consist of microprocessors that collect, analyze and present information. With regards to news and information sharing, it may seem that the users, thanks to greater ability to choose content, hold the upper hand in this process. However, since these data are constantly collected and analyzed for various purposes by companies, for example in the media industry, the users’ choices may not be as unconditional as they may think they are. Using the Swedish media market as an example, this exploratory paper discusses the interdependency between people’s choices and the market-driven choices made by the media industry in relation to news, and the impact these choices may have on media consumption and the media market.

  • Social media game concept within the Digital Zoo : new ways of connecting a tourist attraction with its visitors
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 2011 IEEE International Conferences on Internet of Things, and Cyber, Physical and Social Computing. - Los Alamitos : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769545806 ; , s. 170-177
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper a conceptual model for a social media game will be illustrated. The idea is to find a way to integrate our physical and digital world in a way that will involve the environment around us containing both artifacts and people and become a natural part of our daily lives. We want to show that by integrate ubiquitous information and social media in a game idea, it is possible to create a concept for a social media game application that could be used at a tourist attraction, e.g. a zoo. The value that is received from this application is both educative for the visitors and marketing for the tourist attraction. The conceptual model of the social media game builds upon the foundations of internet of things for the future version of a tourist attraction, such as the Digital Zoo.

  • Significance of Print Quality in Variable Data Printing
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Taga Journal of Graphic Technology. - 1748-0345. ; 4:4, s. 179-191
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Print quality and variable data printing are two important topics when discussing digitalprinting and its ability to be a commercially successful printing technology. The aim ofthis paper is to determine the significance of print quality when using variable dataprinting to customize printed matters. In this study three levels of colour print quality andthree levels of personalization; entirely static, personalized with name, and personalizedwith name, text and image, were established. Sample material was obtained by creatingfictitious advertisements in the personalization levels, which were then printed at the printquality levels. A panel of respondents was asked to arrange the fictitious advertisementsin order of preference. At all print quality levels, personalizing with only name led to arather small increase in respondent preference compared to the static advertisements. However, personalizing with name, text and image led to a significant increase inpreference compared to a static or name personalized advertisements. Hence, to attractthe respondents a higher level of personalization should be used. The respondents weremore forgiving towards low print quality when the advertising information waspersonalized. Furthermore, personalization contributes more at lower print quality levels, indicating that print quality is more significant in static printed matters or printed matterswith a low level of personalization.

  • Competitive and Flexible Company Structures using Vertical Integration and Cooperation : Empirical studies of the Commercial Printing Industry
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 23rd ANZAM Conference 2009.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates how company structures, with respect to vertical integration and cooperation, affect the competitive advantages and resource flexibility within the fragmented and highly competitive Swedish printing industry. The results are based on five qualitative case studies and one quantitative survey study. The results demonstrate that vertical integration is widely used and is important to get competitive advantages within the industry. The main reasons are customers call for a full service provider and the need for integrating adjacent activities in the value chain to ensure fast deliveries and steady and appropriate input to production units. However, the findings suggest that due to heavy costs, cooperation is used to increase firms’ resource flexibility to control necessary resources.
